What they do and why you need the different types ?

Why don't you do a bit of research and write an article for The Knowledge?

Audio amps can be conventiently split into two types: preamps and power amps. Integrated amps are those that have the preamp and power amp integrated or housed in a single case.

Preamps can then be split into (a) active and (b) passive.

Power amps come as either two channel amps, that is one amplifier for each of the left and right channels, or as separate single channel amplifiers, known as 'monoblocks'.

With power amps there is also a choice of the operating class (Class A, Class AB1, Class AB2, Class C, Class D, etc.). Discussion of the pros and cons of the different operating classes is a very technical subject, so you might feel better off in leaving that for someone else to discuss.
