CPJ's Speakers....

I think these are quite rare, never see them on the second hand market! Had a look through ebay (including completed listings) and they aren't on there either.

I've found a manual for them online they are 6ohms rated at 160Watts.

In my opinion these are the best sounding speakers I've heard, they sound really nice plenty of bass and vocals sound fantastic! Quite heavy in weight believe it or not too.

Anyway I don't usually look at AIWA gear but I actually borrowed a pair of these off a mate and he had no clue where his came from, I then saw this pair on ebay (the only ones I have found) and bought them - for £20 they are a bargain.

Not sure if anyone else know much about these or heard these before, currently my NAD 3020e is really struggling to drive these beasts.

They're probably from a midi system. Had a pair from a Kenwood system (that I've since given away) that sounded pretty good if a little bass heavy.

AH! doesn't look like much of a system, must of had one hell of amp in it though to drive these speakers!

I wouldn't have thought they'd need much driving Chris, are you sure there aren't any issues with your amp or the speakers themselves? You may find a difference once you get your new amp.

I think the NAD is struggling because the speakers 160 watts a side, the amp itself is only 140 watts total (20w per channel), and usually to be fair the volume does get cranked quite high, ever higher when the missus and daughter aren't around. I've had these speakers hooked up to a Technics amp (SU-V760 I believe) and it sounded phenomenal, can't wait for the Pioneer to arrive.

Something is not right here.
When you say your NAD struggles to drive these speakers, what exactly is happening?
You are being misled by the numbers you're quoting, I fear.

Mainly the sound is really tinny, the bass isnt all that good either really, I can use Tone controls but then it still isnt quite right. Its definitely a problem with the amp but since Iv'e bought a new Pioneer amp now it wont be a problem for much longer. A hi-fi shop told me (I was in there looking at amps anyway) it'll be because the amp is only rated at 20 watts per channel and isnt powerful enough to run anything above 70-watt speakers, also the speakers I'm using are 6ohm - the NAD apparently isnt all that great with 6ohm speakers.

I could be wrong of course and I suppose the guy in the shop could of just been trying to make a sale.....

I don't want to be disparaging towards your speakers, as you are obviously proud of them, and it's true that I've never seen or heard them, but my opinion is that your NAD is more than man enough for them & is perhaps showing them a quality of signal that they were never intended to deal with. I think your money would have been better invested in a different pair of speakers rather than another amp. The NAD was renowned for it's ability to drive difficult loads - those speakers are not a difficult load.

As I suggested, I think those numbers you are quoting are irrelevant to the issue.

Yeah I know back in the day the NAD was a good amp, my speakers have been tested on a Technics SU-V700 amp and they sounded fantastic, alot better than on my NAD.

TBH it could be the age of the amp, this ones coming up 21 this year, and to be fair i found it in a cash converter type shop for £15, so age could be an issue here I guess.

Also today, the amp has started to omit an uncanny Buzz when you turn it on, only for 3-5 seconds or so. I believe the Buzz is coming out of both speaker channels.

Maybe a cap somewhere or something is starting to fail!

Took lid off... got some orange crusty stuff coming out of one of the caps on the main board left hand side.

Hmmm dunno why I didnt check before.... I usually do. Suppose since I'm getting a new amp anyway it doesnt really matter.

Anyone want to buy a NAD 3020e ? ;) (not really), when my new amp arrives It'll probably end up on ebay.

Thank god that's been explained - a NAD 3020e that fails to drive Aiwa midi system speakers - that was really puzzling me. I'd get it fixed up if I were you. There's nothing much on the market nowadays to compare with the old 3020 series and IMO they are superior to anything Pioneer have ever done.

I think the NAD is going to be 'lofted'. It's over 20 now and I could get it done up BUT then I fear something else might go pop!

I'll stick with my new Pioneer :)

These speakers look familiar... when I was 17 and started working I went out and bought an aiwa mini system for my bedroom at home. Up to that point I'd not owned a cd player and twin cassette decks (yes people were copying music then too!) were a real plus to me as I used to do rock/metal tape trading.

I was overjoyed until one day a mate of mine fetched round an old Rotel reciever/amp and we hooked up my little aiwa speakers (with a discman as the source). The bass kick and extra oomph of the Rotel blew me away and thus I started on the hi-fi journey proper. Within 6 months the aiwa had gone and I had my first separates system.

Those speakers look almost identical to the ones I had and I can remember the looks on our faces when we first put them on the end of a proper amp, lit our jazz cigs and played some floyd.

RichB they could be the same speakers... they do sound pretty good on a decent amp. When I first got the NAD they sounded superb but its deteriorated over the past year (Cap problem), thus looking forward to my new Pioneer A405 - I'm a sucker for Pioneer kit, I think it's because I have always had good memories of Pioneer, I think my old man used to have a Pioneer system which he put together himself.
