If, like me, you enjoy albums by the late Ali Farka Toure or Toumani Diabate (or indeed many others) you will be saddened by this report (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/oct/23/mali-militants-declare-war-music?INTCMP=SRCH) in the Guardian of how Islamic extremists are crushing all music in northern Mali.

It demonstrates how these militant groups distort Islam for their own ends. Culture is everything in the broader Islamic society.

The problem is as far as I'm aware, is the music encourages people to dance...
Dancing brings the two sexes together & that I believe is the fundamental problem they have with music
Must be a really boring life eh?
The Koran only proscribes music when it will lead to idleness and distraction from the praise of Allah and His works. Music (including singing) that celebrates and praises Allah is permitted.
Once again, Islamic fundamentalists are distorting what is written in the Koran, through the commentaries and interpretations, for their own end.
There some wonderful Islamanic based music
What happening in Northern Mali is pretty scary
