Hi folks

First of all, a big thanks to the Administrators for enrolling me so quickly - much appreciated. And please don’t read too much into my username - it was just some (probably) misguided attempt to add an air of mystery to my somewhat mundane existence.

I live in the Pennine foothills (at approx 850 feet above sea level) and work in local government. It’s so cold up here we use valves not so much for their unique sound quality but more as a source of heat. My employment means I can’t afford the high end of the high-end - instead, to use that oft-quoted phrase, I’m out to get the biggest bang for my buck.

The main parts of my system currently comprise:
1) Beresford Bushmaster - bought on the strength of its enthusiastic reception here on the Forum and fed by an iMac
2) Audio Innovations Series 500 amplifier – the three tap model with the Hinchley transformers
3) JR149 loudspeakers - the Mark 1, gold logo version sat on the ‘umbrella’ stands Jim Rogers designed to accompany them.

Now, however, the twenty plus-year-old Series 500 seems to spend more time at the repairers than it does in my listening area. So, maybe it’s time to leave what might well be diminishing returns territory and head towards modern vacuum tube Nirvana. Hence my decision to join the Forum. I’ll be posting more about my dilemma soon (bet you can’t wait).

Music-wise, my tastes encompass everything from Blue Note jazz via rock (and folk, country & soul) to the latest electronic exotica - par for the course for a fifty-something would-be audiophile, I guess. Weirdly, I don’t ‘get’ the Smiths but think the first two albums by the Blue Nile & the last two by Talk Talk are neglected masterpieces.

Hi Bernard, and welcome to the Forum. I'd love to see a picture of your system. Particularly the 149's and your stands. I had (have) a pair of 149's in my system (now upgraded to JR150's, but still have the 149's for occasional rear channel use in a quad setup.

I've never 'got' The Smiths but love late 80's jangly indie guitar pop, go figure!

All the best...

Welcome :)

The AI 500 in some versions wasn't the best made and some often went wrong. Having said that, it was a sweetie when running and although it may cost a bit, a visit to a good restorer may be a great long-term option for you, since I can imagine that amp sounding lovely with the JR149's.

Our very own Anthony (Tube Distinctions) specialises in sympathetic repair and restoration of valve amps, guitar based or otherwise and if he catches this, I'm sure he'd chip in (sincere apologies to others here who may also offer similar service, I don't know you well).

Ooo, JR149's my first proper speakers . . . wish I still had them

Welcome to AoS, plenty of Bushmaster fans here, in fact researching a DAC was how I arrived at AoS.

Anyway, have fun and get stuck in - I think I shall have to play some Blue Nile later too, good prompt there ;)

Hi Bernard,
Welcome to the forum from me too.
I shudder at the thought of the Smiths - I've tried to understand what it is that others see in them, really, I have!

Cheers

Hi Bernard, welcome from me too. I'd love a pair of JR149s one day - but they have gone a bit stratospheric in price the last few years! Always fancied an AI 500 too, so yes please - some pictures some time would be great. :) Hope you enjoy the forum. :)

Hi Bernard and welcome aboard. AoS seems to be a haven for those who don't 'get' The Smiths, so I'll add my voice to those who have already commented. Morrissey can't sing IHMO... :eyebrows:

How Soon is Now? Oh, the memories.......

Love the first two Blue Nile albums. A tragedy that Linn can't or won't have the B sides and "remixes" released since there's some cracking versions and instrumentals only available on now noisy 12" singles, which do sound better than the LP's...
