Pro-ject carbon cartridge upgraded ?

Hi, having just bought a pro-ject carbon turntable with ortofon 2m on the arm ,
And have sat playing most of last night spinning my popping vinyl collection !
But as normal cant help wondering what a new cartridge of higher grade could or not bring fourth a better sound ,and more .
So does any one have said turntable and have you upgraded the cartridge ?
Like to know if it made a difference which I'm sure it does ,and what's the limit maybe I could go with a deck that only costs £300 ! :)

Very nice deck and great value at £300, imo. I reviewed one with the Orty 2M Red cartridge here (http://hifipig.com/pro-ject-debut-carbon/#more-4564) and I was surprised how good it sounded - but I never got around to trying a better cart.

It's a lightweight arm, so probably better suited to mm cartridges, I would guess. ... although I have to confess I now wish I'd tried my Dynavector DV10X5 high output mc cart - that may well have sounded fab -- but I didn't want to risk changing carts when the deck was just on loan!

I think you can safely assume that you can go further up the Ortofon 2M ladder and reap appropriate rewards. :thumbsup:

If your vinyl collection is noisy I would stick with the same cart for now and put the upgrade money towards an RCM - I'd rather have a cheap but competent cartridge playing properly clean records than something expensive dragging its way through all the dirt.

In other words - 'don't put the cart before the horse'

Dedicated vinyl people should have a decent way of keeping records clean IMO so agree with the above :)

I agree the 2M Red is a great general purpose cartridge. If my experience of previous Ortofon fixed-coil ranges is anything to go by, the Blue (next one up) should offer a smoother sound with lower surface noise perhaps.

+1. Also once you have your RCM try a Dynavector 10X or 20X. The later in my experience is kinder to groove wear than Ortofon or AT cartridges.

Still thanks for the input will shop about and see what's on offer for about £200 mark ,and can one upgrade the power supply as its a shocker that came with it looks like some thing from maplins :lol:

Just to put things straight.

The UK Debut Carbon has a 240V motor and does not use a plug in power supply. This is to comply with new EU 1 watt standby regulations but also gives a massive sonic improvement :)

PSU's supplied with Pro-ject are designed specifically for the decks, they perform far better than they look ;)

The Carbon arm is light but exceptionally stiff. Whilst it won't work with very low compliant cartridges, we've had great results with the Rondo and 2M series. You'll be amazed at how good this deck really is.

Sorry sold blue a while back ,:doh:
And thanks laurence as I was going to sell it and move up the ladder but think now I will stick with it and go for 2m bronze cartridge and some new feet to isolate it a bit better cheers guys :)
