Output leads for SL1200

I have two S1200 one of which has the output leads replaced with Monster cables. It sounds better than the other one with the stock cables. Particularly in the bass. I want to get the leads on the second one changed also - what is a good cable to go for? Nothing too pricey, mind :eyebrows:

Are you talking about the tonearm lead?? If so, any decent shielded copper wire should do. If your 1210 still has an internal PSU I would suggest buying the best you can afford as you'll have all sorts of EMI kicking around.

HI Andy - I'm talking about the L & R phono leads that connect to the pre amp, not the wire inside the tonearm. I'm not messing about with that or the PSU at the moment, those mods, if I ever do them, are a long way down the track. :)

No not the intrinsic tonearm wire, I'm talking about the extrinsic cable with your RCA's connected.

I misread your post. yes we are talking the same thing but I need something more specific in the way of advise i.e 'I am using this one and it is good and you can buy it from here' - if you get my meaning?

A lotta folks on here were singin' the praises of the very cheap Belkin phono cables a short while back. How about choppin' the phonos off one end and soldering the wires onto the little PCB/tonearm contacts?

Thanks Dave. I do have a coupel of pairs of those lying around *but* I a not that keen on them - they have a bit of an odd character in the top that doesn't suit me and I also recall reading on here that they are a bugger to strip cleanly.

I must admit I'd not want to cut into a Belkin due to its multi-core construction, but if you feel able and willing :lol:.....

My usual recommendation of the Van Damme Pro-Patch mic cable stands. It's flexible, good materials inside, and very easy to solder (two inner conductors as hot and return, the outer screen connected at the phono plugs, leaving the external arm earth wire intact and separate.

Alternatively, any low capacitance double shielded single core wire would be ideal. There are numerous "guitar" patch wires out there (extra shielding and flexible) which should also be perfect for the job. I've used both Klotz AC110 (as have Rega :lol:) and the Van Damme tour grade, which is also pretty flexible.

The important thing IMO is to make the soldering as immaculate as possible (do as I say, not as I do :lol:) and not to go too bulky with the wires, as thick chunky b***ards will act to short circuit any isolation you have. Stupid too, since the signal from even a fixed-coil cartridge is so tiny...

Well can solder but not done it in years but my plan is to get the gadgee from the pro shop to do it for me - also he is pretty familiar with the SL1200. What I really need is something ready made up with phono plugs fittted ready to go straight on the deck.

ProAudioShop on eBay is one I've repeatedly used - they do ready-made cables too. The other mic cables often come as phono to jack leads, but no reason why the jacks can't be removed and the tinned tails soldered into the techie's tag strip inside?

They do very good value very well made cables in my experience, certainly a good step up from basic cable, but not that pricey. If you have a lot of interconnects or cable to source they're well worth looking at.
