Thankfully, you've got insurance and are getting 100% of the value back in cash (bear with me here lol). The question is, would you get a carbon copy of the old setup, or try something new?

Personally, I'd try something completely different;

I'd make my own speakers (budget about £2k into them as I'd want some real keepers).

I'd want to try a valve pre into mono block (ss) power combo. No idea of brands tbh. I would even entertain the thought of a full valve setup.

I know its impossible to tell, but I'd like to keep the TQ stuff and and all my MCRU bits. I'd probably demo other speaker cables out of curiosity.

I'd like to build an Audio Note dac kit.

I would get all of the same gear back too and would hope that my TDA1541A (long obsolete chip) DAC was still in production. My new LFD amp also uses obsolete MOSFETs, so I really hope 'the worst' does not happen!

I've often wondered about what I would do in a situation like this - the reason being that it would be very unlikely that it would be possible to replicate what I have without waiting a long time for all the various bits to appear on the 2nd hand market. My speakers, for example, I'd be surprised if there were more than a couple of pairs in the country.

Simple answer - I haven't a clue what I'd do!

For me to insure my gear, I'd have to insure for about 4 times or so I'd paid for it - that would be the reasonable cost of replacement as everything is pretty unusual or rare. Hence I'd be silly not to take the money!

I'd certainly seek out another pair of Nestorovic amps but probably have to pay a crazy dealer price in order to find some quickly.

Going DIY with speakers would be good too, as long as you had enough experience of commercial products to know what you like and how it was done.. Put all the cost into excellent drivers and cross-over components.

So why not sell up and go the route you dream of?

I guess, I'm coming a place where I WILL get 100% back if I sell up as I only buy secondhand bargains as they come up. If you buy new you have to swallow the depreciation in return for certain guarantees and service.

the old diyaudio.com? Yes, a long long standing forum with many experts on there to help out - sometimes to the point though of grinding your ideas to a halt as they throw up reasons why this or that won't work - sometimes you have to ignore and just try stuff.

The speakers people have made are quite incredible and all eminantly achievable too as long as you have some space.

If my gear was stolen, I'd put the word out with a bit of financial inducement to find out who'd pinched it (I know a lot of the local dodgy characters) and go along with a few useful friends and collect it. Of course those responsible would be given a token of my appreciation.

christ, i've put so much effort and work into my system over the last 2 or 3 years, both assembling rare components and diy, if it got stolen I'd be absolutely gutted. i think i may well just have a break down and give up.

The hard part would be finding an insurance company that would accept that my old but beautiful HiFi had any worth at all, finding something of a similar quality would be difficult IMO, but it would be fun testing a lot of new stuff.
However if some druggie was to nick it I would go straight to A&E to find him as he would probably injure his back picking up the record deck:lol:

I was burgled once (back in 1988) and the gits ripped the audio components out, there were frayed cables everywhere and they took knives to the speakers, cut up all the drivers and carved the cabinets up (well it was Luton,...fotunately I was only living there temporarily).

I claimed on insurance then added an equal amount myself to upgrade and that's what I would do again, double my money and start a new project ;)

I think I'd be exploring simplicity. If all my rather substantial amount of gear went missing, I think I'd be looking at high efficiency speaker drivers (in my own design of cabinet) and lowish output amplifiers of high purity in sound. 2A3 valves maybe.

Years ago I saw a wrecked pair of Apogee Calipers. Thieves had broken in and threw glue all over the membranes. Bloke who bought them was positive he could repair them though.

I'd be gutted if my own gear was stolen. Having to build a new pair of World designs 25T Excels and also duplicate my plinth for an SP10 would, for a very reluctant wood worker like me, be a pretty big undertaking.
