View Full Version : New Speakers. Almost wetting myself with excitement

After a couple of months of scouting around for speakers to replace my Usher 6381s I've finally bought a pair. Best thing of all is I've bought my dream speakers. The very speakers I've lusted after for a few years but thought were beyond my financial wherewithal. Thanks to a cracking deal that was just too good to refuse I will soon have a massive pair of Usher Be10s in my listening room.

My remit was a pair of big, impressive speakers that had to look good and sound superb. The Ushers tick all the boxes.

I am now almost past myself with excitement waiting for them to arrive. I thought it would be only one more sleep but thanks to the useless banking system it could be four or five sleeps before Christmas arrives early.

And I just want to say a big thank you to Scott (Daytona 600) for trying his hardest to get a deal for me. I'm sorry I didn't end up buying from him as he's a top fella and certainly knows his stuff.

Right, how can I calm down and quell this childlike excitement?

I thought I'd use four instead of one ;-)

They are monsters. But not as big as the Be20 which some lucky bugger on here has. No names mentioned Martin.

Hi Steve. Well, you're only down the road so you are more than welcome to have a listen once they've had about 200 hours to run in. Wouldn't want you to be disappointed ;-)

You're very welcome any time in fact. I'm leaving my current Ushers in situ until the new ones are really singing.

I'm using 4x150w monos to power them. Hopefully it'll do the trick.

It was love at first sight and sound with me and Ushers. I'm surprised more people don't have them. Lots of people haven't even heard of Usher.

Scott, there are few people who spend as much time listening to music as me. They'll soon be run in.

Sadly any excitement that was left I'd now gone. Just frustration, anxiety and worry.

I'm just desperate to hear that they're on the way. This is like a form of torture.

this is the amp i use martin sander sound system magtech

will drive a piece of wet string
Output stage is rated @ 7,000watts over 100amps & 80volts

can send you one to try martin or two for bi-amping
or they make a mono version with 2,000wpc

SANDERS MAGTECH STEREO POWER & MONOBLOCK AMPLFIERS

MAGTECH is a power amplfier designed specifically to drive electrostatic speakers
and other very difficult Loads including Planar & conventional magnetic speakers
The magnetic speaker differ from electrostatic speakers in a fundamental aspect , they require very high amonts of current and power

Magtech power amplifiers feature a fully regulated power supply for very high stable power outputs under all loads and conditions
Sanders has developed a voltage regulator which is essentially 100% efficient. There is no heat from the voltage regulator.
No switching high power / high voltage that generates heat or RF problems. Very small power consumption allows the Magtech to run
virtually stone cold and be left constantly powered without the worry of large power consumption.
The power amplifier uses advanced technolgy capable of driving the most difficult loads without protection circuits that degrade sound quality

The Magtech is the only amplfier in the market that has a linear voltage regulation . The result is a compact but powerful amplfier
that is ideally suited to drive the most difficult loads down to 1/3 rd of a ohm.
Magnetic , Electrostatic & Planar speakers can be driven with effortless power to give true lifelike dynamics and power

What are they? Pro, semi-pro? Seems like huge power for the average hi-fi system. What do they cost?

Mr. C
19-10-2012, 12:24
Power is nothing without control :)

Wrms are meaningless figures, if the amplifier cannot display transient current response and a fast switching (below 30ns would be ideal) to match.

For example the Chord SP1200E outputs a rated 350wrms, delivers a powerful, clean upfront and dynamic sound.

A genuine 50Wrms of class A solid would typically have more current than the Chord, sound far sweeter, much greater depth and texture and more engaging, yet would not possibly match it's dynamic presentation or detail.

Which is better, only the listener can decide, my point here is simple, having Terra watts of power does not necessarily give you instant sound quality.

Matching amplifier and speaker impedance is also important after room / speaker interface issues have been addressed.

Sometimes more is not always better.

Tony

Totally agree, Tony. The thing is, Chord seems to have an undeserved reputation for bright/glary/harsh. My 1200E is nothing like that! I think it speaks volumes for partnering equipment. The Chord just does the power and transparency thing very well indeed.

And to keep it on topic, the Chord powers my Ushers exceedingly well, as it did my previous JM Lab Mezzos.

Transfer cash into your current account and pay by debit card. You then can have it instantly. Did it for a car that cost more than those speakers and sellers prefer it as they get instant money!

Well done on having a car that cost more than my speakers ;-)

Then again you don't know how much they cost so perhaps you actually have an electric toaster or some curling tongs that also cost more :-)

As you'll have gathered by now, I'm a bit of a funny bugger and this is how I like to do it: I always try to have a bike (pedal) that costs more than my car and I like to have a pair of speakers that cost more than my best bike (I have several). For most people this would be relatively easy but its a bit tougher for me as my No1 race bike cost about £8,000. In total my bike fleet probably stacks up to £40k. I mention this not to get into a cock waving contest against your expensive car, but to enlighten you to my dire financial circumstances. See, I didn't have a massive amount of cash in my current account or savings account as I've wasted the equivalent of the national debt of Greece on exotic pedal cycles, Hifi, fine wines, Columbian marching powder and high class whores. So there you go.

As for paying by debit card that would have been a rather silly thing to do. Whereas a credit card gives the buyer complete protection should speakers not turn up, arrive damaged or perhaps aren't as described, a debit card offers no such protection.

As you've offered me such worthy financial advice, perhaps you'd allow me to offer you some. Can I suggest you sell the expensive car and use the proceeds to buy some very nice speakers. Make sure you pay by credit card.
Kind regards
Harry

Harry.

Actualy rather different cicumstances as the the payment I was refering to was a straight handover with a large reputable company. Obviously I was under the assumption you where dealing direct with a known reputable party otherwise I would not have suggested this course of action. I normaly would only pay for such an item on pick up or delivery from a trusted source. Also Credit cards have limits (usualy less than the retail value of your speakers) while no limit on debit card if you actualy have the dosh (which I assumed you would have) for a luxury purchase.

Frankly I don't know where you got the idea that there was implied critic in you having more expensive hi-fi than your car. Frankly I'm not bothered how you spend your money. I certainly was not Willy Waving as I'm sure you are not over these fantastic speakers. Just suggesting a possible means of illiminating your frustrating wait.

Of course if you pay someone a cheque or money transfer and wait for it to clear they can always pocket the money and not send you the goods - which is why I would never use this method for other than a very small ebay transaction. So obviously I was assuming you purchased these via official sources rather than desperate of Nigeria as there can't be many about boxed outside the official import/dealer network. Anyway obviously not practical advice in your circumstances but many congratulations on your purchase and hope you get years of listening pleasure from these.

Paul.

isuckedmandelsonslemons
20-10-2012, 17:52
Paul, I was taught many years ago by my dear old mam, never to make assumptions. Your last two posts are littered with them

To avoid you having to make any more. Allow me to make a few points/clarifications.

1. My speakers could not be coming from a more reputable source.

2. You say credit cards have limits that are usually less than my speakers. This raises two more assumptions: firstly that you know how much I'm paying for my speakers and secondly you know how much a limit might be on my credit card. FYI I have two cards and the limit on both is considerably higher than the price of the speakers.

3. You assumed I had the dosh. Don't know why. I think I fall under the asset rich, cash poor umbrella.

4. I wasn't aware you had implied I had a more expensive Hifi than my car.

5. You seem to have gotten it into your head that I have bought these speakers off the back of lorry or from some other nefarious source. I can't for the life of me think where you got that impression from. Another assumption? Apologies if I have posted anything that would bring you to that conclusion.

6. Thank you for enlightening me on the risks of paying my cheque or money transfer. I can only presume you assumed that I didn't already know that.

So there you go. Can I politely suggest that you quit while you're behind?

And here's a little quote I learnt a while ago that pretty much explains why assumptions are dangerous.

"It is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it is a nail."

If there's anything further you'd like to know about my hifi, cars, bikes, credit limits, depressing financial state, erectile dysfunction or sense of humour feel free to ask as it saves on sweeping assumptions.

Cheers.
Harry

Would you please tell me when they were paid for and where are they coming from ? I can then follow the action and anguish.

Hi Dave,

They were paid for last Wednesday.

They are coming from about 200 miles away.

Does that help?

hifi_dave
23-10-2012, 17:01
Thanks for that. I couldn't quite work out what happened.

If they were paid for last Wednesday and they are in the UK, shouldn't they be with you by now ?

I use UPS for my deliveries and they are next day but if the load exceeds their limits, I would use a man-with-a-van. In that case, delivery would be the same day.

By the way, I feel your pain. I can't bear waiting for goodies.

They are in the UK which is precisely why it's so frustrating that they're taking so long.

They are coming on a pallet. Palletline I'm told.

The whole thing is doing my box in.

That's what I was told yesterday lunchtime. Seems they had not yet been booked in for collection by courier.

Way it works (I'm told) is that local agent collects pallet and takes it to central hub. They try to get full loads before lorry heads off to another hub. That seems to make sense.

All I want are some definite answers. I'm actually quite amazed at how polite and patient I've been. Neither is a quality I'm noted for.

My patience is certainly running out . . . .

jandl100

Jerry, things are tough so I think most businesses are trying to cut costs where they can.

I'm trying to see it as yin-yang. I got an incredible deal on speakers that I wouldn't have been able to afford otherwise. Guess the wait either adds or subtracts from the experience.

It's nice that others are sharing my pain.

If/when they arrive I guess the joy, excitement and relief will be an incredible experience to be treasured forever.

And I mustn't lose sight of how incredibly lucky I am to be upgrading g my system with such incredible top end speakers.

Right, that's enough peace, love and understanding for today. Now where are my feckin speakers?

Harry. The fact that you got a substantial discount on these speakers is no excuse for them using a 'budget' delivery service. They should at least use a courier that provides tracking over the net so you can check on progress without having to ring them up. I have found this is provided with relatively cheap items from online sellers.

BTW. A review I read stated these need a team of 2 people to unpack them so I hope they are providing this (fat chance) or you have assistance on hand when they arrive.

Paul.

isuckedmandelsonslemons
24-10-2012, 10:17
Paul, the fact they are so big and heavy means they have to come on a very large pallet with a total weight of about 200kg. Not every company can move something like that although I agree that the lack of information had been bad.

The good news is that my two sons are both over 6ft and very strong, sporty lads. I will be giving them instructions and woe betide them if anything goes wrong.

This is turning out to be quite a saga.

24-10-2012, 10:17
I really do sympathise Harry. On the one hand you are willing them to arrive with every fibre of your being and on the other you want to rip someone's heart out because they are not there. I agree with Jerry, for an item of such value there really ought to be a tracking facility. I hope they turn up soon mate ;)

isuckedmandelsonslemons

That looks to me like a small lorry. My guess is its taking it to a central hub. Knowing my luck one of the following will happen

1. The lorry will be held up by Usher rustlers

2. We will have a foot of snow tomorrow.

3. The consignment will be in the central hub for a week.

4. That picture was taken on Nigeria by the man I recently agreed to help with a large financial transaction.

5. Some bastard on this forum is a dab hand with Photoshop.

Surely there's no chance they could just arrive without a hitch?

Yeah I thought about that. If they get over the moat, there's three dogs to avoid and according to David Cameron I'm perfectly at liberty to shoot people now. And then there's the wife . . .

I'm not sure 95kg speakers would interest burglars that much

Well done, Harry.

I'm very pleased for you that they turned up  ---- the Be / Diamond thing ---- tricky.

Based on the technical issues that other companies have had when swapping to a diamond tweeter (e.g. B&W), I suspect the two Usher models are very different speakers - B&W apparently had to totally revamp the x-over to get the diamond tweeter version of their Nautilus speakers to sound good.

If you lurv the sound of the ones you have, going diamond may or may not be a good move. I bet it's quite a different presentation. A tricky one.

Start a thread in the Gallery area of AoS with that nice piccy of your speakers and some other system photos. You can then use it as a blog, as many of us do, to continue updating us with system changes and findings.

Chris, I've had some reasonable stuff but nothing really top end. Compared to my r previous Yamaha 2000 components set up, my Cyrus kit is in a different league. The CD transport in particular is superb. The Mono X power amps are brilliant as well but I drive them hard and the fans get on my tits when they cut in and I hear them between tracks. When I get x300s that should sort it.

A lot of people think Cyrus stuff is too bright. It's certainly on bright side so needs very careful matching.

It sounds too clinical with a lot of speakers I've heard.

Thanks Harry , that's how I remember mine , so they haven't changed all that much then ? I remember the Cyrus solid core helped tone it down a little , I'm pleased it's working for you though ! I had the option of a 6a as a replacement for my dead Cambridge but went for a Marantz lite instead .

This is a totally personal viewpoint, so if you think I'm barmy, c'est la vie.

As the electrons course there way through an SS amplifier they have plenty of other atoms/electrons to impede their progress and upset the flow.
In valves there are no atoms to impede the electron flow so it's got to be better.

A well designed valve stage has vanishingly low levels of distortion.

Not sure that analogy holds water there, Alan. Remember also that valves are essentially voltage amplifiers, while transistors are current amplifiers. Different active components, different topologies to make them work well.

I have very much enjoyed this thread, from the anticipation....through to the "final countdown" and then delivery. The tension was palpable. It has been great to share in the pleasure of a new acquisition, more so as Harry is clearly delighted with them.

I found a review of these on the Hifi World site by David Price. Here is his conclusion :-

CONCLUSION

It is amazing how many high end speakers are so obviously flawed. Glorious flaws they may be; indeed some people even buy them because of these ‘quirks’; but imperfections they remain. The thing about the Usher Be-10s is that - to my ears at least - they are mostly flawless. They are exceptionally open and expansive, whilst being uncoloured to a degree than makes your average electrostatic sound like a pair of disco speakers. After a protracted run-in and a thirty minute warm up every day they work brilliantly with all sorts of music, always drawing one's attention to the innate goodness of the recording rather than its faults. They’re superb at capturing the essence of recording, as well as giving you chapter and verse about the fine detail. They’re generally dizzyingly fast and dynamic, yet never need be used solely for these purposes - you can kick back with some late night classic jazz and relax

Hi Julian, I've had a pair of Usher 6381s for a couple of years. I love them so much that I can't bear to part with them. They are brilliant for the money.

But for all that I was very, very happy with the 6381s I knew that the BE10s would be a lot better. They're actually more than a lot better.

I'd put Usher speakers up against any speaker in the same price bracket. Build quality is out of this world on both my pairs with a finish that you'd expect on a grand piano. Value for money is second to none.

I think you'd struggle to find a bad review of any Usher speakers.

Yeah. I like Ushers. I've just spent a hell of a lot of money on a second pair. And I couldnt be more pleased with them. I felt the same when i got my 6381s. I think that says it all.

Harry.

Just caught up with this thread. Congrats on the speakers they look superb. If you got such a big discount it may explain why the old model but it is not good that you were mislead to believe they were the diamonds. Frankly I would be surprised that your 'secret' deal would be available if not end of line or ex dem. However if you were misled you do legaly have some come back.

Since you use Cyrus it may be a blessing. I have heard many comments that the B&W diamond tweeters are worse than the previous model ( too bright). Just maybe by good fortune you have better synergy. Do agree these deserve a high end class A or valve amp preferably with a vinyl based front end. However have not heard Cyrus for years, so though unfashionable on forums I'm sure their top stuff sounds great. Frankly always put off by the need for the additional power supplies to get the best sound.

Paul.

I'll do an update in my blog but here's a mini update five days in.

Just listening to some Peter Gabriel and I'm quite stunned at how good they are. Incredible deep soundstage and a three-dinensional presentation that makes the speakers all but disappear. Considering how friggin big they are that's amazing. Bass is controlled and powerful and the mid range, especially on female vocals is sublime. The treble has a way to go yet but it's already pretty sweet.

Put it this way, if I'd paid two or three times the amount I paid got the speakers I'd still be ecstatic about my purchase.

Honestly, if you are looking for big floorstanders and have the budget and you don't consider Ushers you really are missing a trick.

It's times like this I really appreciate living in a detached house without neighbours.

MartinT

To add my thoughts to Harry's...

My Usher Be-20s are without doubt the best hi-fi purchase of my life, and might be the last speakers I'll ever buy. They are incredibly detailed without sacrificing the whole for the parts, and they are one of the most dynamic speakers I have ever heard. The deep bass is about as extended as a REL Studio II, serious praise (I know as I used to have one) and important for my musical tastes. The soundstage is wide and deep and the combination of berryllium midrange and tweeter creates a palpable and very vivid sense of live instruments in their acoustic space with simply fabulous microdynamics. It excels at those cues that tell you that a thing is real.

Moreover, they always remain musical, rhythm and PRaT being foremost in their presentation. They are fast without being bleeding edge.

What still amazes me is that they keep responding so well to system upgrades, with no limit that I have yet discovered. Every time I change so much as a cable they just reproduce the change for better or worse. They are essentially as near neutral transducers as I had ever hoped to own, a wide open window on what my system feeds them with.

The Absolute Sound called them a 'Musical Comprehension Machine' and I think that's as good a description as I could muster. To quote their conclusion:

I feel confident in saying that the Be-20 offers terrific value for money, exhibiting two qualities most music lovers prize. The speakers retrieve sufficiently deep levels of musical information to fully engage our minds, while at the same time conveying the more vibrant, emotive, soulful elements of music in ways that will surely win our hearts. In short, the Be-20s are wonderful machines that foster deeper comprehension of music - in all its aspects.

That's a ringing endorsement Martin and I can't ever see me needing or wanting to.

I'm listening to Donald Fagan ATM and the sound is just so natural and if the speakers weren't so big, beautiful and imposing I wouldn't notice them in the room.

I've also experimented standing and sitting in various parts of the room and its an amazing effect as the sound fills the room like its sand that's been tipped in and is filling every corner and nook and cranny.

On the subject of sand, I'm on day 11 now so I'd guess they've got about 50 hours on the clock. But I'm itching to fill those cavities but I'm not sure whether to rein myself in until they've done about 200 hours or do it now. I'm also unsure whether sand will be as good as lead shot. I know Martin went for lead but what are the advantages and is there anything else I could consider?

I'm grateful for any thoughts although it seems ridiculous to think that these speakers can be improved further.

Harry

I used 60kg (30kg in each speaker) recycled lead shot for yacht keels as it was the cheapest I could find. Getting it all into the compartments required some use of a 90 degree drain pipe and much patience.

By way of an update . . . I'm listening to Avalon (Roxy Music) and the thing I'm noticing more and more about these speakers is the staggering soundstage. It really is as good as I've ever heard.

Sitting in my normal listening position I'm finding myself with the feeling that the music is actually coming out of the walls and filling the room. No way is the music coming OUT of the speakers.

I'm also more and more pleased with the smoothness if the top end. The speakers are definitely running in nicely.

Oh, and did I mention they look stunning?

MartinT said his Usher BE20s are his best ever hifi purchase and who am I to argue? Same here.
