Speaker Suggestions...........?

Every so often I tell myself I'd like to try some different speakers despite being more than happy with the Quads, don't mind whether they're floor or stand mounter s, so fire away with your suggestions, I like All kinds of music, smooth jazz, classical, oldies etc, and the room is about 20 foot by 13' with the speakers firing across the room, which has laminate flooring, but material sofas and wooden coffee table, bookcase, and "Hifi" cabinets, only the coffee table is between me and the speakers by the way.
I think I've covered all bases, so suggestions please, oh, as least expensive as possible might be good in these penny pinching times! :)

And to keep the wife happy, gloss black if poss?

Well, I've had a pair of Usher 6381s for a couple of years (piano black) and I love them so much I can't bear to part with them, even though I've just bought my dream speakers. They're also Ushers; BE10s.

Don't know if they're to your tastes but Usher without doubt make the best bang for your buck speakers on the planet. Unless anyone knows different.

I really enjoy my Focal 706v standmounts and they are sensible money too. Perfect for a small room (Like what I has now) but they do struggle a bit in a larger room.

It might be a psychological thing, but I don't really want speakers that cost less than what I already own now.
The Q Audio might be picking up What The F??k awards, but they don't float my boat, sound apart, they are a bit flimsy, and Frank, I used to have a pair of Focal 716's that I sold to sponsor my first Quad 22's, and I did enjoy them!
I do fancy some Ushers I have to say!

JBL - Centuries or L100 or the other one which is similar but I can never remember the model name. White 12'' bass drivers - will be about as far removed from the QUADs as you can get. Lots of fun and big grin bass response :)

Popped into the Hifi shop for a quick listen to some speakers.........Kefs new so called WTF award winner was first, boxy sound or what!
Moved quickly onto Roksans Kandy with the ribbon tweeter, better, but not much, and then some MA Silvers at around £1200' better but certainly no improvement over what I have already.
May rethink what I'm going to do as I was really underwhelmed by the first two, in fact I haven't heard boxiness like I heard today in years, surely not caused by the dem room which was far from having a live or bright aspect to it?

It's hard going back from non-boxy sounding speaker to quite resonant ones.

I moved from some AVI BiggerTrons to some B&W 805 Matrix's a long while back.

The BiggerTron's sounded great but as soon as I heard the 805s and went back, suddenly the BiggerTrons sounded like they were playing inside a box themselves.. It took minutes for my untrained ear to pick up the sound of the cabinet once I'd heard something better. Yet, they'd cost me just £100 more from eBay as they were slightly forgotten in comparison.

There's a thought, how about finding a pair of B&W Matrix 803 floorstanders? No box to hear there. Probably can pick them up for a bit more than the secondhand price of your Quads ~ £400. Would equate probably to much over a grand of new speaker, if not more.

If I can't sell them I will have to part with my Avondale Revelation RMS2's, They are a special speaker designed by Les Wolstenholme and are basically black with dark wood top and bottom plates on.

They are both really great speakers so I don't mind which I end up with but one has to go.

laid back is not how i would describe them in my system! :)
These one's having had the true split cross-over mods carried out by Spendor etc.
Either way i appreciate that they are not for you, good luck with your search.

The speakers in Spendor's 'Classic' range are voiced very differently from those in the 'A' 'SA' and 'ST' ranges, where I agree, those have a somewhat laidback sonic balance.

The designs in the Classic range (all stand-mounts) are essentially forms of BBC monitors, and as such are voiced around neutrality and realism, giving a very dynamic and life-like sound, totally divorced from anything that would be considered as laid-back.

Like Anthony with his SP1s, I used SP100s (from the same Classic range) for six years, and they sounded fantastic :)

They are not yet as I was going to take them to Les for the "external" crosovers to be checked out and updated if he thinks they need it.

I will put them up for sale in a few weeks time if the JM's don't go to a good home in the meantime.

Glad you've seen the error of your ways - it was going to get very messy! :eyebrows: :spank: ;)

To be fair, though - with classic Spendors there's no chance of piano black or anything approaching WAF - so you'd be better off looking for something more domestically acceptable to the boss. :)
