The TQ Blue speaker cables arrived this morning and I hooked them up about an hour ago with not a little excitement. My initial feeling, to my utmost surprise, is one of disappointment

Gone is the glorious openness the Belkin's convey with such consummate ease. The top end has lost all it's sparkle, mids are a little muffled in comparison and bass control, where on earth did that go? So far I have listened to Anne Bisson's Blue Mind and Nils Lofgren, Acoustic Live and all the fun has gone completely from these recordings, they sound somewhat bland and uninvolving. All the subtle details of these recordings have got lost in the mix somewhere. Guitar notes have lost their edge and there is no body to their tone. I'm lost for words actually because I was so convinced the TQ Blues's were going to be such a big step up from the Belkin's. I can't quite believe I'm back to listening to my system rather than the music. I really hope they just need a little longer to bed in... :eyebrows:

I'm going to leave them in the system for a week and then switch back to the Belkin's. If things haven't improved by then they will be going back... :eyebrows:

p.s. The piano on the track Believe from Acoustic Live is horribly harsh and is actually distorting, there is also a harshness to Anne Bisson's voice which just isn't there with the Belkins. :stalks:

Could it perhaps be some sort of compatibility issue between the cables and the Mini-T? What I am hearing isn't subtle...

Macca
19-10-2012, 12:40
My experience is that big differences like this in the sound of speaker cables is a result of a mis-match between power amp and 'speakers. Otherwise cable changes only result in subtle changes or sometimes in no difference at all. For some reason this mis-match was not showing up with the Belkin leads. Ah well - you can always go back to the Belkin if nothing improves.

I am totally stunned and surprised by your findings!

Especially as the machine supposedly burnt them in.

I would urge you to keep running them non stop in your system and see what they are like in say a weeks time.

I see they were terminated, now, according to Frank (Effem ) he said that even the Tellurium Z plugs took something away from the party, it may be that?
Mind you, as they're not yours yet you can't remove the plugs, so I don't know what to suggest.

All I will say is give it a bit of time and keep us updated!

Total surprise here too, having owned both of the aforementioned cables myself

Check that you have the cables wired up with the correct polarity, but I assume that being terminated by David they have some identification on them - bare wired without plugs you can all too easily connect them up wrong.

synsei
19-10-2012, 12:51
I am utterly stunned to be honest, I was expecting so much more considering others have said they sounded right straight out of the box. Ah well, they have a week to shape up or they will be getting the boot..

Surprising results!

Not heard the blue's but the blacks are superb.
Frank prefers the blues so I'm guessing the cables are good?
My Blacks took WEEKS to finally settle down to what they finally sounded like, so maybe burn-in with the machine isn't as good as actually playing them?

Just a theory though.
My money is on the T-Amp not getting on with them, it can happen.

I have a T-Amp, but not tried it with the Blacks.

I run black in my system and regard it as fit and forget. I ran black on my treble with blue on my bass when bi amping with two mini t. The difference was noticeable swapping between blue/ black and the treble/bass.
I noticed the black to be very revealing and honest, the blue was like black with the speaker grills on.The blue was more laid back and warm. I have a set of the excellent belkin cables installed in the garage, having tried them in various configurations I found them to enhance the frequency extremes. Horses for courses the more I experiment the more I realise system synergy is unique to each set up/room/set of ears.
Trust your ears if the blue doesn't work for your set up they will for someone else...pass them on and benefit from the experience......

I would give them the week though...my son chopped my blue run in two and bi amps with a couple of mini t, they really do something right together.

19-10-2012, 18:10
After further listening I've noticed a slight lack of weight to bass notes and a loss of focus to the soundstage. Transients are smoothed off and drum skins sound as if they are being struck in a half-hearted manner. It might be helpful if any members also using the Blue's with a T-Amp could post their thoughts? I realise it is early days yet but I am developing even more respect for the Belkins as time goes on. My head is telling me to keep the Blues in the system for a week to see what develops whilst my heart is wondering who the hell took the music away. Time will tell I suppose :eyebrows:

One saving grace is that the TQ Blues are a substantially lighter build than the Belkins therefore they don't play Tug 'O' War with the super light Mini-T

Dave l tried th TQ Blacks with my Sensation ( T-amp) and had no compatability problems, and believe me they sounded anything but thin or harsh, but incredibly smooth and very full, they sounded awesome, but not very interesting, but l only had them a week and sent them back, l really should try them again for a longer period........................................

Clive
20-10-2012, 07:45
Dave, a lot of what you describe is what I hear class T amps in my very revealing system. I believe the TQ cables to be good so one of two things could be happening here:

1) The TQ cables have an electrical characteristic (L, R or C) which upsets your amp.

2) The weakest link in your system is now the amp and you're hearing it for what it is.

Yes, if what you want is a $1m sound.

If you are inquisitive enough to consider a $2m sound then see if a different amp synergises with the TQ. If it doesn't then revert to $1m.

I can't understand how some fancy wires like this appear to have such a "huge" effect on sonics. Must be summat wrong with them...

Having said that, The Mini-T doesn't have much bass weight (yawn) and the DM2's are not the last word in bass definition either I remember (despite their other undoubted strengths). I very much doubt the Belkins are so bad that they mnask this though, just 'cos they're cheap.

Maybe the "burn-in" machine (what a load of bollix  ;)) messed them up?

Dave - you were talking about distortion on piano thta wasn't there before - when you hook the Belkin back up play that track again straight away and have a listen to the piano - this might give a clue as to what is going on.

If it was only that Martin I wouldn't be quite so bothered. I'm pretty convinced now that it is some sort of electrical miss-match, it is the only thing that can explain the slight distortion and dull as ditchwater presentation...

I agree that can really be the only reason, the distortion being the real giveaway. I was just wondering if it was still there with the Belkins but perhaps beign masked enough not to be noticeable unless you are actually listening out for it. If it is then it must be amp/speaker problem although I would have thought this would have shown up by now as you have being using and liking the combination for quite some time.

I use a run of blue on the bass and a run of black from 200Hz up on my active OB's, run with a pair of Bantam Golds. They use a different chip to the Tripath amps, same idea though. Cables sound great with the amps.

Suggest you put them in a second system if you have one and leave them running for a couple of weeks and try them again. they do take an age to run in.

DSJR

Sorry fellas, but speaker cables are purely passive things and cannot distort the signal on their own, unless there is some horrible capacitance or inductance issues which shouldn't occur these days, should it?

6A mains cable should always be the reference. Any "better" cable should sound similar, but "better" than this IMO! and certainly not "different......."

synsei
20-10-2012, 12:18
As an example, the track I Believe on Acoustic Live from Nils Lofgren sounds vivid and alive when using the Belkins. With the TQ Blues however it sounds like it is being played on a cassette deck with the heads out of alignment, plus there is this underlying, subtle distortion to the guitars and voices.

I would think that would depend on what load the speakers are presenting to the amp and how it copes with it. I agree that the cable alone cannot be the cause - as you say how could it be?

Marco

It could be an electrical mismatch, but I've also long suspected that these Tellurium cables 'tailor' the sound in some way, thus creating a filtering effect that works very well in some systems, but piss-poor in others, which I think is what you're experiencing.

I don't believe that what you're hearing is necessarily due to the cable showing up deficiencies in the system, but rather vice versa - or more accurately, the system telling you whether it is compatible, sonically, with the tailoring effect of the TQs. I've never liked cables that do anything else other than, as faithfully as possible, transferring the audio signal that they're presented with.

This is precisely why I haven't jumped on the TQ bandwagon, and nor will I be likely to; instead I'll be sticking with my tried and tested (more sonically neutral) Van den Huls! ;)

Nice one, Dave.

I've often found that, when it comes to speaker cables, those from the pro-audio industry tend to sound more 'truthful' than their so-called 'audiophile' counterparts, which IME, often produce an unwanted effect, by acting as a 'bandage'.

Hi Neil,

Yes this pretty much mirrors my experiences with TQ Black. Their effects will be sympathetic to some systems, but a neutral cable they are not.

I can't say for sure, as I haven't tried any TQ cables myself, but judging by some comments from people who've used them (the most telling for me are those of the negative variety), it's what my experience in these matters suspects is the case.

What I think TQ have done, rather cleverly, is identify a problem that exists in many systems today (that of a tendency to exhibit a balance which is forward sounding and also explicit/'shiny' at the top end), and have addressed this by creating a filtering effect that ameliorates the worst excesses of the problem, which is why the results achieved are so mixed.

Of course, there is also the question of synergy, and if you've successfully blended together cables from different manufacturers, TQ being one of them, and created an effect that pleases your ears, then bravo, but it's a somewhat 'arse about face' way of doing things, and certainly not my favoured method of achieving musical satisfaction from a system! ;)

Incidentally, I had heard that the TQ blue was a good cable if you wanted to tame a forward sounding system.

BTW Dave, the trusty Hafler is out of my system at the moment, as I've tweaked my Neats (with the help of Bob at Neat) and they now are a perfect match for my exposure amp and my room.

This is bullshit, Dave. We don't practice censorship on AoS. If David has a problem with something written here, then he should be coming to me about it, not you!

Just say what you think and refuse to be gagged. We take a very dim view of that here. If you can supposedly "ruin" someone's business, simply from being honest, then something is very wrong indeed!!

There has been a terrible misunderstanding somewhere down the line which I am pleased to say has now been cleared up. What is going on here???

I was very pleased to see an honest review, I find it really disappointing that MCRU are discouraging a transparent review.

Having looked into the situation now, I can state categorically that this wasn't the case, although it looked that way initially - and we would have taken a very dim view of any such attempted censorship here.

Happily, however, it was just a misunderstanding between the two Dave's about something else entirely, and all is now well! :)

Well as someone who heartedly recommended the TQ Blues, I did jump on it, and I believe there can be no other explanation other than some kind of synergy problem, mainly because with my kit I had never heard such an improvement for such a little outlay, bearing in mind I bought them preowned from Effem.

Well as someone who heartedly recommended the TQ Blues, I did jump on it, and I believe there can be no other explanation other than some kind of synergy problem, mainly because with my kit I had never heard such an improvement for such a little outlay, bearing in mind I bought them preowned from Effem.

Dave, it's such a pity they did not float your boat, I am not overly( read not much at all) technically minded, but I would guess your little T amp just didn't like them!

I am still as baffled now as ever how Dave didn't find a magnitude of improvement by changing from the Belkins to the TQ Blues, especially so when I sold my TQ Blacks and had to use the Belkins until the TQ Blues arrived, when my own observations were still the same the second time around from that same upgrade earlier on in the year. Mind you, there must also be some TQ Black fans wondering how I didn't like those and have gone back to the Blues.

Still, Dave didn't like them and that has to be the end of the matter, so leave the man enjoying what he enjoys :eyebrows:

I slotted the the the belkins back in for an hour or so last night. They are crackin cables for the money BUT they seem to emphasise frequency extremes, enjoyable in the short term but annoying when you hear sibilance on recordings that aint they're.
Went to the blues from that and the sibilance reduced and the bass was still a bit over blown/soft but a far more even handed neutral presentation.
Returning the black to the equation was like a sigh of relief...just less uncoloured, more honest again.

The TQ stuff does for me what the picture in the website shows....less distortion, bringing things into focus....

You seem to have had the same experience as me Tony but in reverse :)

I'm sure the TQ Blues are excellent cables in the right set up, but they were obviously not happy in mine. I am currently listening to Stevie Wonders, The Secret Life Of Plants which is one of the many albums my good lady and I used to trial the Blues alongside the Belkins on Saturday and to be honest chaps it could be a completely different album. It's alive with detail and ambience aplenty.

One very important lesson to learn from this thread is to ... and I cannot stress this enough ... LISTEN BEFORE YOU PURCHASE!!! What works for one won't necessarily work for another.

Thank you all for your insightful comments. I am now off to write up the experience on my gallery thread (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?p=374848#post374848) ;)

I went from NAC A5 to TQ black and thought the difference was stunning. A great cable indeed!

To be honest James, if the Black's are voiced in a similar way to the Blue's, they would fail in my system as well. I'm glad they work for you however ;)

A5 is a good cable I think, and ideal for older valve gear. The only reason I ignore it now is the silly price charged...

It could be an electrical mismatch, but I've also long suspected that these Tellurium cables 'tailor' the sound in some way, thus creating a filtering effect that works very well in some systems, but piss-poor in others, which I think is what you're experiencing.

I can only speak for the TQ Ultra Blacks, but there is no filtering or tailoring going on whatsoever. They are a wide open window, as confirmed by comparing with a few other speaker cables.

Not heard the blue, but it must be similar to the black.
I know it was a bit of a muddle in the end but it was great to hear an honest review even if it does go against the tide, I feel all to often people follow fashion and trends.
I am a fan of the TQ Black and the Ultras are also good. I currently use NVA LS6 which suits my ears and sound very open and un congested, and I can't see myself wanting to change for a long time. Good luck with your Belkins.

Have you tried the blacks back in the system after using the LS6S for a while James.:) If so what is your impression .

Thank you James. The Belkins are not the 'be all and end all' of speaker cables obviously, they just seem to suit my system. Incidentally, if you want to read my full review of the TQ Blues it is in my gallery thread which I linked to in one of my earlier posts (post 85) :)

Yes I have. After using the LS6 for a while I popped the TQ black in and found it to be lovely sounding but slightly wooly and coloured.
For me the TQ Black is an exceptional cable and it offers real value, but for me the NVA LS6 suits me better. It is extremely holographic and everything has its own space, you hear choirs are now made up of many indevidul voices and not just a mass of sound, the bass is full and fruity. I found the TQ Black treble to be slightly rolled off where as with the LS6 it was more open and didn't seem to have a ceiling to the sound.
Not sure if that helps at all.

Well, the NVA cables won't be acting as a deliberate filter, that's for sure ;)
