iTunes Distortion

Got round to ripping my cds to itunes last night using error correction and apple lossless. One cd, Led Zep Mothership, took ages to rip and when i played it back in itunes it was full of nasty distortion/ static noise.
Any idea what that can be? The other albums sounded ok.

Hi Colin, I've not used iTunes...and wouldn't but we'll leave my prejudice there ;)

Either your CD is horribly scratched, and iTunes is re-ripping bad frames in order to get an accurate rip, as dBpoweramp would if configured to do so.

Or have you got a rare 'copy protect' disk?

Try making a copy of the disk, via Roxio or Nero etc., or whatever copy software you usually use, and then try ripping the copy, this usually works for me :)

Edit: I am not an advocate of music piracy, and buy all of my music on cd, but I think that the UK should pass legislation to.legalize format shifting, rather than just turning a blind eye. Preventing this via cactus or other copy.protection methods is a shabby attempt to gouge customers, especially with superannuated retreads of 'classic' releases where all costs have long been covered.

They're fighting a loosing battle - let's hope they waste every last penny trying to stop the tide from turning.

That shouldn't be a problem, copy protected CDs just don't seem to want to play properly in computer drives. There was a big stink a while ago as some manufacturers fitted CD/DVD rom drives to their CD players, rather than a standard CD drive.

Guess what, the copy protected CDs wouldn't play in the CD players fitted with those drives :eyebrows:

I had a Tascam Semi-Pro CD Recorder that had that problem. Ironic especially as you could disable SCMS on it... It wouldn't even attempt to play 'Flickering Flame' by Roger Waters, which had some early copy-protection inbuilt.

You'll find a little yellow face in your taskbar, if you load a copy protected CD it'll go red & grow horns :lol: Shortly after that it should go green & start smiling...

Providing it is for personal use, to backup or format shift as it's been put earlier, and not for piracy, then I don't see a problem.

Any idea what that can be? The other albums sounded ok.Are you running iTunes on a PC or a Mac? Have you installed the latest iTunes? There were a couple of bad versions a few updates back which went crazy with some CDs. Most probably they were ones with pre-emphasis, though they could have had other coding - e.g. HDCD.

If you've got up to date software it's probably OK, and the suggestion that it might be something to do with DRM on the disc might be correct, but otherwise I'd try installing the latest iTunes and see if the problem goes away. When it was very obvious it affected both the PC and the Mac versions.
