SL 1200 mk2 problem

Someone is kindly giving me a free technics 1210 mk2 this coming Sunday (minus cartridge).

Trouble is it has a problem in that the platter runs too fast!

Thought I'd post this before I actually get it in case its a common problem and I have to order a part.

I know its a bit hard to say but has anyone any ideas about which part of the deck I should be looking at?

I suspect it may be the pitch control.

As it's a freebie it's got to be worth trying to get it up and running.

I will look at the other many Technics threads as to a suitable cartridge.

If it's the pitch potentiometer then bypass the pot with a molex link on the motherboard.

If it's really too fast then I think it's the motor drive IC that's furkled. It's not too difficult or expensive to get a replacement main PCB on e-Bay.

Ok I got the 1210 yesterday and the platter runs really fast (I would think 78rpm or faster) the 33 and 45 buttons have no effect at all :scratch:

I've tried goggling and you tubing it but can't find an answer.

I don't want to just dive in and spend money I don't need to even though the deck was free.

Have you had a look inside yet ? It might be worth checking all the multi way connectors are in place , or any signs of damage ? Beyond that I would ask Richard of Vantage but he's unavailable at present , sorry I can't help anymore than that .

Oh just a thought , there are SL1200 service specialist around in the DJ community , do a search .

As I said, I think it's going to need a new main board. However, there's no telling whether there might be motor damage so a service centre might be your best bet if you don't want to get the circuit diagrams out.

From your description the problems are electronic, Martins answer ( above) was bang on , replace the board. A standard 1210 is a much better t/t than a Rega or Project, so it is certainly worth spending the money on.

Think I might buy a jumper from maplins and take the pitch slider out of the equation in case it's that.

If free deck is otherwise OK get something going cheap like this as a doner for parts. May be cheaper than new main board (if you can get one) or using service centre. Plenty videos on Youtube on dismantling/reassembly. If it runs at 78 it's unlikely the pitch slider.

With the deck needing a new arm and cart, main pcb, respray, feet, lid and numerous other bits and bobs I wonder if it's actually worth it?

I may just put it on fleabay and make a few quid.

If it's that bad dismantle it and sell the good parts as spares. I'm sure you will get more money. I don't think anyone will touch one if the main board is gone. There's one fom Japan at £80+. This is what puts me off these decks now as spares are already scarce and will disappear soon leaving the only source another doner deck. I wouldn't mind betting that Inspire aquired all the spare main boards for their recent DD decks. Things are given away free for good reason!

Just download the circuit diagram and work through it - if it's running really fast it means most likely that it's not getting any feedback into it's servo and the problem although outwardly complex could very likely stem from the power supply.

The motor driver is obviously working since the platter is turning - getting a replacement PCB is probably fairly easy as the value of the 1210 is at rock bottom now due to the cessation if it's use in DJ'ing.

You rarely hear of them actually going wrong which is a testament to their build quality and reliability - I recently got rid of a pair with around 5 hours use each for £60.00 (and those were still boxed!).

A common problem with many of the Technics DDs is failed solder joints where the FG coil is soldered to the PCB. The FG coil is in the aluminium strip running round the outside of the motor on the PCB. This will give the problem that Lodgesound identified - no speed feedback to the controller (on an SP-15 this can give about 200rpm :eek:).

Re-solder the joints, and if that doesn't work and you verify that that is the problem, the FG coil is available as a spare from Connect for about £20.

+1 for a knackered pcb. That's how I managed to screw my 1210 up when I attempted to install the tripple regulation modules. Pcb are available for about 40 quid on eBay if you are patient. Fitting a new pcb is very very simple and more preferable than working through the pcb to detect a fault. I'd still keep the old pcb for spares (caps etc). Hope this helps
