No both yourself & he is wrong. The series 'III' is a low mass arm that is NOT a 3009 ;)

Whatever :)

Only trying to help the OP. Anyway may sell my 309 does that qualify?

I know you are, thats good but it had to be pointed out.. The template in the listing is nothing to go by, it's only a universal template for the two model arms.. 'as for your 309'! Im not intrested in the arms they made after the '3009' tbh.

I don't have a link/quote/reference, but I distinctly recall that the SIII long-form name is "SME 3009 Series III." It's a 3009 because it's a 9" (ish) effective length arm.

And I don't have one anymore, more's the pity.

Just to add to the confusion, I thought that Dave (synsei) had/has a series three

Wasn't the series three the one with the fixed headshell, but the detachable tonearm?

Correct.

The Series 3 was the Titanium tubed, ultra low mass, fluid damped arm which didn't sell. It was rapidly replaced by the 309 etc.

That's the one - blocky assemblies round the counterweight area, like the Series V that followed, but sticking with the skinny, snakey shaped pipe theme of old.
It has to be said though, that the nomenclature that was followed in Mill Road wasn't exactly logical!

No it's not a '3009'..It's plain & simply a Series 'III' or 'IIIS' They have removable arm wands & have two different fixed plastic headshells..

I know what it is. I've owned 3 of them at various times, and I've always referred to it as simply "Series III" myself, but I do recall seeing 3009 in conjunction with it somewhere. Wish I could remember where.

Does any one have one to sell?

I have a Series III with all the goodies Paul, but if I sell it to you my deck would be mostly 'armless ;) Now, if you happen to have a quality 9", medium mass tonearm in good condition that you would consider exchanging for it then I might be interested, depending on what it is of course. I wouldn't want any of Linn's arms unless you own an LV-V, and I also won't be needing a Rega of any description, so over to you ;)

I don't really have anything to offer.

What are the cash prices for the Series 3 and/or either of the 3009 arms?

I can sort out a series 111s from my collection if you want.
Are you looking for a basic cartridge and or the fluid damping kit?.
I'm away for a few days but can sort out some photos after the weekend.
Dave

I would be looking for £165 + postage for this one (cartridge not included).

Just as a matter of interest David, how well did the 2M Red perform in the Series III because I wouldn't have thought it to be a good match?

Just for information's sake (and from personal experience) the Goldring 1012GX works very well in the SME Series III

Hmmm, that's interesting to know Rob, which means the rest of the range should be compatible I'm guessing... ;)

I have a Thorens TD160 Super set up with an SME series 111s as my second deck and is fitted with the fluid damper tray.
The 2M red works perfectly in this and tracks very well (I havn't tried it without the fluid damper). However, I have changed over to a Shure V15 V and the difference is very obvious.
I would compare the 2M red with the Shure V15 111.
I've heard a lot about the 2M blue and look forward to a comparison with the V15 V and my Denon DL103
