What's the opposite of willy waving?

Don't get me wrong I think it's a great ethos for the forum, but what's the opposite?

Willy hiding (ooh-err)?, ice cold bath?

I get a lot of satisfaction from acquiring stuff for little money, or nothing, and getting great sound after repair/tweak/re-design or rebuild.
It helps a lot that I'm an electronics engineer, which isn't helpful for those that aren't. Building something at low cost has always appealed.

I think what you describe is a great way to get into Hi Fi, like many i started out with what most would probably describe as Junk now, however, i got great satisfaction out of improving, and modifying so called junk, infact the only way i was ever able to get the system i have today was by applying what i learnt over the years, and designing and building most of it myself.

Well regarding vintage one rule of thumb i recommend is never follow the flavour of the month/year..

* They are generally overrated & generally vastly overpriced *

The best sound for little outlay are the best kept secrets ;)

Best kept secrets mean items that never get talked about in magazines or forums because they either never heard of them or they know nothing off, hence they go for little outlay.

I'm using a 40 year old amp at the mo which i'll not mention because ive told no one :D but if it got into the wrong hand the asking price for these would be tenfold.

As a side note always take what people say about a product with a pinch of salt.

Funny that, but it was my interest in building my own audio equipment that fired up an interest in electronics, which led to a job as an electronics engineer (my last job) :eyebrows:

Yes, the foregoing interests me.

Getting the most bang for the least bucks always makes sense.

I started the now defunct "Hi-Fi Shoestring Project" forum in eBay 'groups' a few years ago, strictly with a view to guiding people in good value choices and to obtaining good recommendations from members. I also offered advice on modifying, building and repairing various Hi-Fi items.

The emphasis was mainly on used and vintage gear, but not exclusively.

It ran quite well for a while, with quite a bit of international interest, but eventally fizzled out.

Such is life.

If you're boasting about it, it's still a competitive act but at the same time denouncing the willy wavers as fools and so feeling superior in a different way to them.

At the end of the day, it's probably those with the proverbial long term relationship and still good sex lives but who don't feel the need to talk about it who are the real winners.. That is metaphorically speaking as I say.

I would have to agree. I have had some bit's n bobs myself over the years that people have scoffed at yet sounded a million dollars.
