no rubbish stay away from them you don't want them ;)
I've got a couple of pairs of magnums which are very good for little money and if i can get some cheap magisters then i'll be happy

Quite a nice old thing the Magisters. A friend of mine bought a pair in the seventies and had them for years. They sounded most impressive to me then, first Hi-Fi speaker I ever heard. Having such a large driver in such a relatively compact cabinet, means that by modern standards the bass extension would be limited. Transient response would not be good and the mid would be coloured, however, the DT3 dome tweeter sounded pretty decent, if a little peaky. Overall, you'd find them a good fun speaker. Just make sure the vinyl 'skin' on the bass driver has not started to de-adhere itself.

Bert!
Yes the big male Mandrills are a spectacular beast, a close relative of the Baboon and one of the bigger monkey species. You wouldn't want to piss off a large one!

Are the original Goodmans Maxim any good? They go back to the 60s.

Hi Shane.
I've had a couple of pairs. They were very good for their time (late sixties/early seventies), but not by modern standards.
There was also the Videoton Minimax which was very similar, that came along about ten years later and offered much the same.
Goodmans also produced a 'Double Maxim' which had a longer cabinet with two bass/mid drivers simliar to the original Maxim. These are now very rare.
All were outclassed by KEF's B110 equipped small speakers (there were several).

I've had some Maxims in the past. A lovely pair that went with the matching Maxamp 30. (The first ever transistorised amplifier).
I thought that for their size they sounded superb but I did think that the crossovers could have done with being external, not much room in those little boxes.
Expensive to buy these days. My pair went for £600 ish

I liked the Dimension 8s, even if their stereo imagery was decidedly odd!
I had some Magisters but got rid of them on discovering both tweeters were blown. I thought that I was extremely unlikely to find another pair of tweeters to replace them, so was most annoyed to find a pair on eBay barely three weeks later. Even more annoyed when they sold for £7...
I would like to try another pair but prices seem to have shot up for some of the old Goodmans models recently, including the Magisters. The most astounding are the Achromat Series - a pair of Sigmas used to barely scrape £50, but now they regularly go for over £400.
It's annoying for someone like me who likes taking speculative punts on loudspeakers I'd like to try but on the other hand I have always been frustrated that Goodmans models never seem to gain the respect they deserve and which is often unfairly heaped upon some of their ropey peers. Clearly their time is coming and I was just ahead of the game!

Second everything you said, but don't forget the Triaxiom 3 way drivers (with foam coated paper cones),
technically equal to Tannoys but fraction of the price but heading north, i've stashed a pair of 1220c.

I have a dozen NOS Axiom 401's stashed away. Might try a line array sometime.

 Whoa!!...whats a man doing with that many 401's, when you do put them in an array, it will be trooser flapping powerful for sure.
Psst..wouldn't mind a pair myself if you don't use it all. :eyebrows:

Ah, the Dimension 8!
I remember Goodmans demonstrating these at the audio shows in the seventies. Strange sounding speaker, not bad though. I believe this also used the Maxim type bass/mid drivers in angled pairs on each side.
I very successfully used a pair of the 10" rear ABR units in large cabinets with a pair of tannoy IIILZ drive units.

I currently have these : SL3 Magnums, SL5s & Achromat 400s.
Wonderfully non-demanding speakers.
