What cart are u running on it and how do you rate it?

I have just taken it in for a service and cartridge fit.

The cartridge is a Lyra Delos and it sounds...........well, actually it doesn't sound because the arm is cattle trucked. It's been in storage and the bearings have seized up..:doh:

Brasso is your friend for polishing the platter. When I started, it was brown. Thirty minutes later and it looks all shiny and new but I doubt it will look like that for long.

That's the Odyssey arm ? I listened this same combination with a Decca super gold at Doug Dunlop's place a long time ago , very nice and Doug loved it .

I've used a whole tin of Brasso but I still haven't got the platter gleaming like yours! :eek: Are you just meant to use one piece and then use a different cloth to polish it?

Rub it on with an old cloth until you can see the surface clean up and the cloth full of black gunk, then polish off with a soft cloth. Do this a couple of times and it will gleam..:smoking:

I had a mate call me round once when he couldn't get the platter rim polished despite a couple of evenings at it. Turned out to have been lacquered sprayed at some point, so no amount of elbow grease or brasso could get through to the metal....:mental:

Very nice. I was checking out a sold pre-amp at a recent acquaintances house a few weeks back, he had a source with a SME V on it. it sounded not unlike Guys HeybrookTT2 with SME and Koetsu Black on it. A little bit too full for my tastes but otherwise right on the money with respect to timing and self noise etc.

Not really qualified to answer that one but I usually use a spray containing bees wax, rather than a silicone spray. The bees wax also comes in tins but is quite hard and more work than the spray, which goes on easily.

My Source now looks transformed! :)

Used some beeswax polish on the plinth and it has done the business.

I'll take some pics when the sun is out and post them in the Gallery.

I use the lift from an Odyssey arm on my Decca International arm. That's as close as I've got to owning one!

Dave and Julian : Nice polishing jobs all round.

I now have the arm to repair, so hopefully I can get it up and running again.

For all those bling-ites out there, the arm is actually an Odyssey Gold Signature, (No. 06) with diamonds fitted to the cuing lever and headshell. The arm tube wire is v d Hul 300 solid silver. These were custom arms, of which only 17 were made.

It is constructed entirely from brass, plated with 24ct gold over nickel. Effective mass is on the highish side, and was designed for low compliance cartridges.

This arm has been rewired internally at some point, and the bearings are very notchy and tight, perhaps due to damage in storage, transit, or even "tweaking" when the wiring was done.

It is going to be used with a Lyra Delos which should be a good match.

The arm and TT have been stored for a few years since I last fitted a cartridge, so that's most likely the cause of the 'sticky' bearing. Hopefully, you'll get it up and running quite soon.

Julian and Dave -
just forgot to mention, don't use Brasso on anything other than the platter. Here's why (from a longtime Source fan).

" It was the use of Brasso that ruined the Papst Motor. The chap that had my Source before me used to polish the platter,sub platter,motor pulley and mains plug and some brasso must have run down the pulley onto the shaft. Now I think its ok to use it on the main Platter then wash it to remove all the brasso but don't use on anything else.

Brasso is an abrasive. I've used it for for lapping in bearings which are tight, but I can see it causing undue wear on motor bearings and shafts, especially if left over an extended period. Personally, I'd lacquer the platter once it was polished. Apart from simplifying maintenance, it is common practice with alloy platters, and might even help the sound, though that is by the way.

Dave R - I have to say that despite looking a bit ott, the GS/Source combination would never be called fruity. Have you heard the GS with a good cartridge?

But if fruit is what you would use in a description, then maybe the appropriate adjective for the Linn would vegetable. :)

Just to say the Gold Signature arm has been repaired and re-installed on its Source. I had to replace the bearings, and I rewired it internally and replaced all the connectors. A few other tweaks, and the deck was set up again in its new system, and sounded very good, the owner being happy to get it back up running again after such a while.

I am always reticent about commenting when listening to others' systems as I find it takes a while to really appreciate the underlying qualities rather than the initial novelty of something different (so maybe sometimes appear a bit unenthusiastic, and not particularly effusive), but in this case I did enjoy hearing some old favourites again, and the system was very impressive, and I could happily have listened to lots more records, which is always the best indicator.
