Our glorious obsession.

I have been reflecting a lot this evening about our glorious obsession. I would hazard a guess and say that our passion for the pursuit of audio nirvana is more than merely buying expensive hi-fi equipment, it is seaking something special. Something which not only fulfills your personal audio needs, it is a way of showing your feathers rather like a peacock. Something we can compare with our peers endevours. It is about Engineering and understanding it is to many a constant work in progress.
Sadly, should you become as obsessed as many of us are there holds a title. often referred to as anoraks or train spotters despite not being positioned on a railway plaftform with a notepad. It is much more acceptable to spend a kings ransome on golf every weekend, going to the bookies or simply getting pissed every night rather than spending some time in your chosen weapons to listen to some great music upon.

I now feel comfortable being classed as such and care not a flippin jot. I am really happy to be part of a great community or brethran who immerse themselves in a great past time and one that does no harm to the masses. Someone once named football "The beautiful game". I think of hi-fi as "Our beautiful obsession". I drink to you all good ladies and sirs.:cool:

Well put, Steve. All I can add is that discussing our obsession with those who don't understand (i.e. almost everyone) is fruitless and I have long since stopped bothering. So it's like a secret pursuit, to be discussed behind closed doors after the secret signal has been shown and the all-clear given...

I do take Martin's approach, though. Sometimes I don't even talk to other audio guys; because, the string drive guy doesn't like the idler drive guy who doesn't like the direct drive guy who doesn't like the............. :scratch: Yeah, I definitely need an all clear before I consider having someone around for a session. Funny, car guys don't do that to each other, so much. Mopar, GM, Jaguar or whatever, there is an underlying respect for being "into cars". And, no one thinks he's crazy for spending sick money on a classic car restoration. Somehow folks can "understand" that.

The only thing I ever discuss with people is music and that's just skimming off the top, hardly any of the bands/artists are known to my friends and colleagues, apart from my best mate, but he lives in bloody China! I never touch audio gear as a topic of conversation, waste of time TBH as they look at me like I have two heads! Mind you a lot of the chat on here goes over my head too and I regularly have to Google stuff :scratch:

But I have no problem being called a music geek and I quite like it that no-one knows about the artists I prefer, as it normally means I can still get tickets :)

It's a harmless pursuit that has great moments of pleasure although, IMHO, the greatest time is when you make your first few purchases and realise what you have missed. The law of diminishing returns kicks in quite early in this hobby.

The only thing I ever discuss with people is music and that's just skimming off the top, hardly any of the bands/artists are known to my friends and colleagues, apart from my best mate, but he lives in bloody China! I never touch audio gear as a topic of conversation, waste of time TBH as they look at me like I have two heads!

It's even worse if you try to get some geeky understanding from audio profesionals. Tell guys working in recording studios about "special cryogenic cables soaked in virgins tears", sound amending power cables or other hifi gadgets and they will die laughing:)

Quite possibly my favourite female live performer - nothing quite like a Shelby gig and last time I saw her we had a moment at the end of the show, when she selected me out to hand her plectrum too. I've been weak kneed ever since :)
