Hello all

Hoping that someone may be able to help me here.

I have a Quad 77 CDP which has started misbehaving. Occasionally, it will fail to read a disc upon first loading and will display an ERR message. Pressing eject then results in the drawer opening about a cm then sticking. On other occasions playback will suddenly stop midway through a track and the display returns to the default (shows the total disc time).
At no stage has the cdp skipped - it either plays normally, fails to recognise the disc at all or stops suddenly as if the stop button has been pressed.
I phoned Quad who suggested a new mech might be needed. They estimated about £150 all in. That's my fallback if all else fails, but I plan to take the lid off and have a look first.
A quick google suggests it could be something simple like the grease in the mech going hard. I dunno.
For info, I believe the mech is a Cdm 12.4.
As a side note, if I were to get hold of a new mech, is it a simple case of fitting the ribbon cable or is it more involved?

Grateful for some pointers.

Cheers
Martin

Difficult to advise for me as I know nothing

However my view would be to send it back to Quad for repair and service / check over , if you were to buy the components and were able to fit it and it still played up you would then be back to SQ 1 and money out of pocket

Only My opinion , other will have different options ;)

Hope you get it sorted soon

It's a fair point. Quad's service dept has a very good reputation, so leaving well alone and sending the player to Quad is likely to ensure a good few years of happy listening.
OTOH, if it's a simple fault there's no harm in having a look.

Strangely, the problem seems to have fixed itself for the time being.

No idea what's going on, but not complaining.

It also changed the "This message was transcribed by cruelly tortured laboratory monkeys and transmitted by abused carrier pigeon. " signature to a blank... PC effects? On the Quad that is....

Yes, that signature only appears when I post via the medium of magical telephone.

This message was not transcribed by cruelly tortured laboratory monkeys, nor were any carrier pigeons harmed during its transmission.

If you know what you're doing DIY.
If not send it back to Quad for repair.
At least then they're only going to charge you for the one repair, and not extra to cover the cost of the damage you cause attempting to DIY.
