Tekni-fi/Croft Pre - valve regulated, similar to 25R line-stage - £480
This Pre-amp was originally made by the Danish company Tekni-fi, who were also Croft distributors. The previous owner sent it to Glenn Croft for extensive modifications, and also had some other mods done elsewhere, including the pots. I’ve had further mods done; it now has a single pot, fully rewired, a newly wired selection switch, further rewiring to the output caps, extra dampening, and some improvements to the casing. It looks fantastic; the high gloss finish is superb, and if you’ve ever been put of by Croft’s dual volume pots, here is a solution.
Glenn remembers the unit and rates it as better than a 25R (although not as good as a 25RS, of course!). I think it has a little better dynamics and detail than the current 25 and 25R, although it has perhaps slightly less grip on the bass than the 25R. There is still room for more modification; you could easily get the volume pot switched back to something more Glenn-approved, and of course there is ample room for tube-rolling.
It is ideal if you don’t need an MM phono input, or use an external phono stage. It has 3 inputs plus a tape out.
Features:
- Croft output stage with 2 x 12AX7
- power supply up to spec to be used with this output stage:
- 2 huge Mundorf Tube caps for smoothing
- separate tube regulated power supply for each output tube.
- separate transformer for the heater section also uses a separate transformer (The previous owner used a Weber Copper Cap instead of a tube, but you can swap it out for a valve).
- Jensen power caps
- TDK Single volume pot, which I had rewired.
- Elma selection switch, which I had completely rewired
- Clarity output caps, braided cloth and silver strip wire cable
- Perspex case
