As I'm an 80's guy I guess it would be these:
Madonna - Madonna
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
Fleetwood Mac - Tango In The Night
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - Junk Culture
Human League - Dare!
But in the last 10 years or so...
Groove Armada - Vertigo
Air - Moon Safari
Zero 7 - Simple Things
Faithless - Reverance
Massive Attack - Blue Lines
In my youth my collection was a lot smaller so I suppose ccertain records got hammered then wheras now the rotation is huge by comparison. So given most miles clocked up in my twenties I would say:
Led Zeppelin - IV
Donald Fagen - The Nightfly
ZZ Top - Eliminator
The Eagles - Hotel California
The Stone Roses - S/T

This is going to take some thinking about though.....

Hmmm... I think for me it would be:
Lloyd Cole 'Music In a Foreign Language'
Jethro Tull 'Heavy Horses'
Genesis 'Selling England by the Pound'
Yes 'Close to the Edge'
Camel 'Dust and Dreams'
I also think these sum up my state of mind perfectly at any one time.

Well maybe go for a long walk and come back a lot later, as I know you are going to cost me some money Chris

Ha!
Don't worry, I expect you'll already have them all - I was the same as you, but without the Afghan!
This is so difficult but at the moment these might be strong candidates:
Jethro Tull - Aqualung
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Kingston Wall - II
Kauko Röyhkä - Onnen päivät
Oliver Nelson - The blues and the abstract truth

This was really tricky and quite surprising to me, because there are things that would have been played to death if my buying habits had been different. The reason being that I used to become obsessive about buying some things - Zappa, being the most obvious example. I bought huge gobs of his back catalogue in a very short space of time, meaning that no single album got played excessively. I was lucky enough to be close to the well stocked and exceedingly numerous used record shops of Brighton at a time when most things were priced by a market that relied on turnover and therefore pretty cheaply.
Some of those that nearly made the top 5:
(in no particular order)
Fleetwood Mac - 'The Pious Bird of Good Omen'
Dexter Gordon - 'Go!'
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
Jeff Beck Group - 'Beck-Ola'
Jefferson Airplane - 'After Bathing at Baxters'
Gong - 'Camembert Electrique'
The Doors - 'The Doors'
Bob Dylan - 'Desire'
Pixies - 'Doolittle'
Black Sabbath - 'Black Sabbath'
Bad Company - 'Bad Company'
Tommy Chase - 'Groove Merchant'
Neil Young - 'Rust Never Sleeps'
Love - 'Forever Changes'
David Bowie - 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars'
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young - 'Deja Vu'
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - 'Electric Ladyland'
The Faces - 'A Nod's as Good as a Wink'

Over the years, these are probably in the top ten, but it's difficult to say which, apart from Bruce, has got the most turntable time.
Bruce Springsteen Live 1975-1985 disc 1
Level 42 - World Machine
Phil Collins - Hello, I Must Be Going
Howard Jones - Dream Into Action
Jean Michel Jarre- Equinox
Since rediscovering vinyl last year I would probably add:
Fleetwood Mac - Greatest Hits
The Who - Greatest Hits
Elton John - Greatest Hits
Might be
Pink Floyd - Animals.
Genesis - Wind & Wuthering..
Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus..
Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene..
struggling here but it might be.....Genesis - Seconds Out or Pink Floyd - The Wall..

2 led zep 2
3 pink floyd the wall
at the moment i cant stop playing
1 omd omd

Black Sabbath - Vol. 4
Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

I clearly didn't read the thread name properly
Of the albums I've chosen, the 5 I most listen to would be:
Mary Black - Circus
Def Leppard - Hysteria
Elton John - Greatest Hits
The Script - The Script
James Taylor - Hourglass
The Grand Wazoo
22-07-2013, 17:49
Actually, what Tim was getting at when he started the thread was that he wanted to know in absolute terms those albums you have played most since you've been playing albums. So most played in your life, not just now.
......so go on then Paul, have another go at it!

Duly corrected Chris, definitely struggling with this one lol
They wouldn't be far off my last list!
Def Leppard - Hysteria
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
Elton John - Greatest Hits
Mark Knopfler - Sailing to Philadelphia
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells II
P.
Very enjoyable theme this. :)
I too love Mary Black and Elton John and Dire Straits.
It's hard to whittle down your favourites. But Fleetwood Mac's eponymous album has gotta be one. Here's Stevie Nicks singing "Rhiannon":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKuYTn9A6uk
Jackson Browne's tribute to Darryl Hannah "In the shape of a heart" on "Lives in the Balance" is one of the rockiest albums I have ever heard too:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arUl7VK_vsY
We were fond of closing the Bedford College (London) Disco with the Doors "Riders on the Storm" from the famous LA Woman album:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qRJIBtbc2c
It was not unknown for Al Stewart to rock along to Bedford College Folk Club and do his thing. Was ever a better song than "Year of the Cat" ever penned?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqZc7ZQURMs
Finally, and yes, I am showing my age, but Jon Anderson was a hell of a singer in his Yes days. "The Friends of Mr Cairo" is a stunning later record:

Enjoy.

Probably...
Split - The Groundhogs
Thank Christ For The Bomb - The Groundhogs
Abbey Road - The Beatles
Rumor & Sigh - Richard Thompson
Bridge of Sighs - Robin Trower
.. but I wouldn't put my house on it. I'm sure the Ramones debut album could be in there too.
.
Seal - Seal (really for track 9 Violet) got to be IMO one of the most cleverly put together tracks of the last 20 years. Played to death!
Steely Dan - Gaucho
Donald Fagen - Nightfly
Fourplay - Fourplay
Anything by Lee Ritenour
Quite a thread resurrection but stumbled across it while looking around the site.
Not been easy looking back all those years but here goes:
Soundtracks - Can (most of Can really but this one the most)
Relayer - Yes
Neu 75 - Neu!
Trans Europe Express - Kraftwerk
Faust IV - Faust
According to jriver, currently its
1. Procol Harum..Novum
2 yo yo ma..ennio morricone
3 Annie Lennox.. nostalgia
4 john Prine. September78
5 john prine..the tree of forgiveness.
It was reset recently so no 1 plays is 45 times
Vinyl wise it would be different

Oops, that’s 7 :(.
Someone else who likes 'Floodland'!
I thought it was just me.
In my youth my collection was a lot smaller so I suppose ccertain records got hammered then wheras now the rotation is huge by comparison. So given most miles clocked up in my twenties I would say:
Led Zeppelin - IV
Donald Fagen - The Nightfly
ZZ Top - Eliminator
The Eagles - Hotel California
The Stone Roses - S/T
Just looked back to see what I picked. I'm listening to Hotel California now and I was planning on listening to Eliminator next.
Ah, plus ca change.
Someone else who likes 'Floodland'!
I thought it was just me.
I’ve got all the Sisters vinyl they did :).
———————-
Back in the day I also played Hawklords - ‘25 years on’ to death - I liked music with a ‘speedy’ edge if you know what I mean.

I’ve got all the Sisters vinyl they did :).
I've got the first one, whatever that's called, Floodland and Vision Thing, all on vinyl. I didn't realise there was anything else?
It doesn't look like I posted on this thread first time around. Excluding classical, which is what I mostly listen to these days, I'd say, in no particular order:
Rolling Stones: Exile on Main Street
Iggy & The Stooges: Raw Power
The Velvet Underground: The Velvet Underground (3rd album)
David Bowie: Station to Station
Half Man Half Biscuit: This Leaden Pall
Someone else who likes 'Floodland'!
I thought it was just me.
Absolutely not ”just you”! :)

Impossible to answer really based on the fact I have never wanted to limit myself and am always on a casual search for something new and inspiring.
I wouldnt want to say five albums because it doesnt sum up my love of music from choral, classical to you name it
My seminal shelf includes Joy Division The Fall and The Smiths but thats not to say I havent owned or listened to many of the albums you have all listed. I just need to know that shelf is there as my reference point for something really special.
I tend to play enjoy and move on. Even artists get bored of their own records and develop over a career. I have around 500 albums to get through plus countless tracks on my computer. Too much good music about to define myself in five albums
On a play count its probably The Muppet Album and Showaddywaddy when I was a nipper :)
Martin, your description of your listening habits resonates strongly with me. Like you I listen to a lot of new music and this is what primarily interests me. A number of the albums I listed in my ‘most listened to’ I actually haven’t listened to in years (though there was a time when I listened to them often).
My seminal shelf includes Joy Division The Fall and The Smiths
Defines you a little bit I think. ;)
I mean I know what you are saying, but the question is what you've played the most not your favourite 5.
It's all ridiculous anyway. I like Joni Mitchell and I like Wu Tang Clan and there is a lot of ground in between them.
Plus I have some records which are so sacred I don't like to play them too much. Hendrix for example. Axis Bold As Love - I never want to ruin that record for myself by listening to it too much. You've got to portion out the best stuff sparingly.
As regards Joy Division, 'Unknow Pleasures' is up there with 'Axis: Bold As Love' with records I'd play to aliens to convince them they should not destroy us. If I only got to play one it would be Axis though.

This lit a big smile thinking back.
Winner has to be The Offspring - Americana. No idea how I could afford it at like 8 years old but I blasted it every day for years and carried it around on my walkman.
Metallica - S&M is probably the second most played by virtue of being one of maybe three albums owned and finding its way onto my very first mp3 player. I think it was a 64kbps rip on some weird memory card thing that I could plug into my phone. About 4-5 songs fit so I had to keep changing them.
Dream Theater - Images and Words.
Opeth - Ghost Reveries.
Aqua - Aquarium haha, it just has to be top five.
I'm 99% sure those have to be the top 5 in my life. With Images and Words and Ghost Reveries being the ones after the listening rotation opened up due to having some more pocket change and a non time restricted internet connection.

Yes it can all be taken as some way of defining us but I dont like defining myself too much when it comes to music. I wouldn't want to be defined as mainly into a Manchester scene as it just happens that this seminal music came from artists in my local area
Ive kissed the bricks of Ian's house and I tend the grave site because something so deep and magical happened in those few short years.
I can listen to one of the live albums or even a bootleg and get more out of the experience than the well known studio album.
I wouldnt want to pick five albums and head off to a desert island...that way lies madness no matter how good the albums.
A moment of pure joy listening to Stockhausen or religiously based Choral music almost cant be defined. Im not religious for a start and some of Stockhausens work is more iffy than other stuff
I dont know what I have played the most as I dont keep count. I dont think anybody here can sum up who they really are in five albums so I dont even try. Big world out there and some great music. I cant keep up with it all and Ive yet to play many of the cds Ive gathered in.
Ive been a bit naughty by defining some of you as "mainstream" and a bit "Dire Straits" in your choices...when is Hotel California coming up :) Thats me being naughty because in a way people are over defining themselves.
To me music listening is more of a John Peels office scenario with huge boxes of unheard tapes. Its not an easy or neat way of listing my five most played albums....not alf pop pickers
Best wishes to everyone on the forum

Back when the Wheatsheaf in Stoke was one of Europe's premier music venues and not a shitty Weatherspoons it was my mate's job to assess the demo tapes of the up and coming bands who wanted to play there. There would be a bin bag full each month so he roped me in to help out.
Not so easy to make a decent demo tape back then so a lot of them were done on budget Tascams or just with a ghetto blaster set on record. So you had to try and listen through that to see if they were any good. I didn't like the responsibility, really made me feel guilty chucking them back in the bag as 'No'. I mean who am I to judge? They had Oasis there before they were anyone, what if I'd rejected the next Oasis? Always wondered if John Peel felt that way and maybe that was why he played so much stuff that was totally out there.

Oh good I could take The Wall and Out Of the Blue then :D " Good morning worm your honour"
I could build a shelter from the gatefold artwork. I hope to hell there is a love interest on the island or Im pretty much stuffed making coconut effigies and listening to my 5 X 2 albums :(

Hi Martin - would be very grateful if you could recommend some Stockhausen for me to start with. Perhaps PM me?
My five would be (from the last 20 years or so):
Wheat - Medieros
Pavement - Crooked Rain
Sparklehorse - Good Morning Spider
American Football
David Sylvian - Blemish

Maybe some Lambchop, Stars of the Lid, Glass Candy in more recent years.
Classical would be: Purcell's King Arthur, Angela Hewitt playing Bach's 48 Preludes & Fugues, a recording of Howells' Gloucester Service, something from Andrew Carwood's Byrd Edition and Hereweghe's recording of BWV 198

1. 'Electric Warrior' T. Rex
2. 'School's Out' Alice Cooper
3. Roxy Music first album
4. 'Billion Dollar Babies' Alice Cooper
5. 'Hunky Dory' David Bowie
These were the first five albums I ever bought, and were played so much because they were all I had. I still play 'Warrior' and 'Hunky Dory' quite often.

Youve caught me out really Kim as its mainly the Karlheinz Stockhausen that Radio 3 sometimes play. I wasnt writing it down but I was looking at the general cds available before I saw your post....Pricey :D So far from being an aficionado I just liked a few pieces I heard played on the radio...maybe the key word is "moments" of joy but some of it is unusually pleasant to listen to :)
I will check out Barrys recommendation and KS is perhaps one of the more difficult artists to experiment with without being confident of your choice. Have spotify got anything?...... I will have a look. I have been very lazy in checking it out and I must get on with it
It could be a bit of a marmite selection and liking one album is no guarantee of liking another. Let me see if I can sample some more on i tunes

I get where you're coming from Martin.
I have ordered a copy of the Theatre of Voices "Stimmung" CD on Barry's recommendation as I already have something by them that I like (Cage: Litany of the Whale). I'll also have a nose around on Tidal/Spotify.
I tend towards recent stuff at the more accessible end of the spectrum (Adams, Glass, Reich for example). I want to try/find more modern music and Stockhausen is on the list of composers I've made to investigate further.
Conscious that we run the risk of straying too far OT, but thanks for your comments.
