Hi all

can anyone recommend a method for removing persistent fluff/grunge from a stylus. i started getting severe distortion on my deck and on closer inspection there appears to be some fibrous stuff built up around my stylus tip. my stylus brush doesn't seem to be able to dislodge it, could i use alcohol or something, or just plain old water perhaps?

thanks

P

Try one of these (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SLIME-THROWERS-STICKY-TOYS-ALIEN-CROCODILE-HAND-SNAKE-SPIKEY-BALL-/261077356923?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item3cc96c517b#ht_762wt_1111) - they cost almost nothing and are functionally identical to a device which costs up to £30

You just drag the brush across the stylus, along the cantilever.
The bristles are short strands of carbon fibre, and are pretty stiff.

I make my own stylus cleaning fluid.

One third Isopropyl alchohol and two thirds distilled water.

Use a small, soft artists brush with the bristles cut down to about 5mm long, you'll find that works well.

Get one of those pots of gunk you lower the stylus into. Can't remember the brand name & can't check as at work but they are really good and no danger of damaging the tip or the cantilever.

The sticky hands that I linked to will do exactly that job at a minute fraction of the price.......it's the same stuff.

Or if you would prefer not to have to explain to your mates why there are multi-packs of childrens toys sitting next to your system you could order a pot of this (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Silly-Gum-Silicone-Putty-Rubber-Mold-Making-RTV-Art-Clay-Silver-Sugarcraft-PMC-3-/280867773904?pt=UK_Crafts_JewelleryMaking_GL&hash=item4165061dd0) which is the same stuff (stash the yellow pot away as it is a hardener for the blue silicone compound). Each pot contains 20g's of product :)

Audio Technica AT-607 does wonders for my stylus.

A cheap and very functional cleaning product is to buy some "Magic Eraser" stuff. This is just a melamine foam, used for erasing spots on various materials.

Buy a sponge in your local super market and slice it into some 3mm thick pads. Place this on the (non rotating) platter and drop the needle onto the pad a couple of times. Use NO FLUIDS! Use ONLY the vertical tracking force suitable for your stylus, and make sure you dont bump the stylus in any other direction.

Works fine, cost almost nuttin'

Stylus Cleaning Putty is watchmakers Rodico from Bergeon, I use it all the time! I personally wouldn't use it on a stylus though unless you can see close up if the stylus is clean...it has a habit of leaving traces of itself behind and it can also transfer oils and grease to where they're not wanted...
