HI

Just tried to but a Mini T and this was the reply I received

Hi Allen, many thanks for your inquiry. I'm sorry to say we are out of stock at the moment because we're waiting on more power supply units. Another factor is that we're soon to introduce a new model that will be far superior to the current Rev 2 Mini T. Best regards, Team Amptastic

Looks like I will wait now :D

Or maybe still the TA2020 chip but with a proper power supply ala the Stamp.

The Stamp looks interesting, but a lot of money (~£700 iirc) for a TA2020 based chip amp.

Hi all, seems like we couldn't contain the news any longer

Yes, it is true, we're soon to be releasing details of our long awaited successor to the current Amptastic Mini amplifier. We're in the late stages of the process but it's not too late to suggest new features or enhancements to the wishlist. Please do so via the form on our website (see below)...

We've gone right back to the drawing board, the case design, the board, the components, everything. Building on what we've learned with the first model, we will hopefully deliver something even better!

We'd love you to be involved with the process so we've set up a page on our new website for you to register your interest, and receive updates as we have them. We're giving away 5 units of our new amplifier and more if you register before launch. Head over to http://www.amptastic.com to find out more!

Best regards,
Chris & the team at Amptastic - sales@amptastic.com

Just had an email from Chris at Amptastic:

Hi there, I'm contacting you because you've purchased an Amptastic Mini-T audio amplifier in the past...

VERY IMPORTANT SAFETY WARNING - REPLACE PSU CABLE
---------------------------------
Following a report from a customer, for your safety, you should IMMEDIATELY replace the power supply lead that was supplied with the Mini T amplifier. We will provide you with a brand new high quality fused UK IEC power lead FREE of charge if you do not have one available (just email: sales@amptastic.com).
--------
Note: this only affects customers who received the older small 'triangle' shaped UK power plug lead (see this photo: http://bit.ly/ZjgaWP). More recent amp purchases would have received a standard square fused IEC Kettle lead.

DETAILS:
---------
With repeated use the power cable PVC may split near the connectors (see this photo: http://bit.ly/TeHO4k), exposing the three coloured power wires, the safety of the cable is compromised and could lead to electrical shock/damage/fire if put under further stress, twisting and movement. Please IMMEDIATELY check your cable for any damage or splitting, DISCONNECT and dispose of it. You should still replace this cable, even if there is no damage, as this defect may appear in the future. Moving to a higher quality fused cable will rule out this possibility.

APOLOGIES:
----------
I want to ensure that all customers are completely safe and happy. I'm sincerely sorry for any inconvenience caused. If you are affected by this, I hope you can change this cable straight away for a new one (if you have not done so already). Amptastic no longer uses the original overseas supplier, in favour of UK based supply.

As a small-scale seller, I'd much rather be up front about this and inform customers of any potential problem, replacing these defective items with minimal hassle and ensuring no harm. I hope that you will continue to enjoy the fantastic sound from the Mini T amplifier for many more years!

I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know that you've replaced the power cable and all is well,

Best regards,
Chris @ Amptastic Audio

I do have one of the triangle plugs with my amp. Good on him to be upfront with this all.

Yeah, some of the early Mini-T amps had a cheap unfused "kettle lead" mains cable, iirc - just swap it out for a decent one. :)

Yup, good advice - TBH the one I got with my Mini-T went straight in the bin as soon as I saw it and I used another - I seem to have more spare kettle leads than anything else lying around here

I corresponded with Chris recently regarding the mains cable issue, as an aside he asked for my opinions on what features I'd like to see in the mk 2. I don't want to say what I suggested in case he was thinking about adding it but suffice to say I didn't think there was any value in adding a phono stage.

I'm also keen to see what finally emerges.

07-03-2013, 09:37
Alan Mac from AVForums tested the Mini T MK1 and found it to be almost identical to his Quad 405-2 amp, from his analyses he then mentioned RF and suggested that building a 20 kHz low-pass filter would have made it perfect..

Very interesting read maybe Amptastic could have a look into it to see if it's worth implementing in MK2 and if there's still time to squeeze that circuit in there to make it an even more legendary amp.

http://www.avforums.com/forums/hi-fi-systems-separates/1398037-mini-t-2020-20w-class-t-amplifier-2.html

Alan also talked about distortion levels and I think it would be great for Amptastic to measure the average and mark the casing around the volume knob with green zone indicators for 4Ω/6Ω/8Ω speakers as guiding points for people who don't know how or who don't particularly have the equipment to measure and effectively avoid distortion.

I think quite a few AoS'ers offered suggestions for the MkII - I chucked in my two penn'orth quite some time ago.
Do you think having it measure identically to a 405 will make it sound like one?

DSJR
07-03-2013, 18:07
The Amptastic phono leads are very good indeed for negligible money and have ferrites at each end - they're not particularly directional either. I do appreciate that ferrites work at FAR higher frequencies than 20kHz, but thought I'd mention them as they work very well with the Mini-T...

I couldn't hold any longer went with 3 different SMSL units all TA2020's.

Sold the first two (SA-36A) which I had bi-amped wasn't worth it because you couldn't really tell the difference, only when setting the volume beyond residential levels which is not practical nor ideal.
Kept the third one in black/gold (SA-S1 from forexmen@ebay) with much better parts used or should I say as advertised. I then bought a separate indeed-hi-fi-lab's power brick with proclaimed ultra low noise and with a much better power output @12V5A rather than most which at best are @14V3.8A.

Must say I'm very happy with this setup my s520's are not complaining..

However I still want the Mini-T mk2 regardless!!

C'mon Aptastic get these babies rolling it's time!!

PS: Aptastic are giving away 5 mk2's all you need is to do is simply register on their official website for a chance to win!!

That's really clever, it means that anyone who prefers the traditional way of doing things can simply turn the amp back to front and it'll pass for an old fashioned one. Crafty!

Not sure what all the fuss is about. After all the hype and requests for customer feedback, this appears exactly the same except for the price increase. I was looking forward to this but can't say I will be rushing to order. Have they even bothered incorporating any suggestions from potential customers? The non-marketing and lack of any useful information is further reason to avoid. And I'm not sure how much revision can actually be done to the basic TA2020 circuit aside from the usual audiophile components.

Yeah the price is questionable and not one photo of the PCB and component layout, not knowing what components were used ether.

I wan't to order one anyway and open it up give my thoughts on it whether or not it was worth the wait. The PSU seems somewhat under powered can't expect a lot of bass response from 12V @3.5amp brick as they have claimed that being one of the improvements.

14-12-2013, 11:46
Don't judge a book by its cover guys, the original Mini-T was a revelation and I fully expect the Mini-1 to build on its reputation. The price increase is a bit of a worry though as it steps on the toes of some capable competition from the Far East, some of which boasts upwards of 50wpc to play with. Case quality looks good but an extra input would have been mighty useful...

Hi Jeff, no worries! The Mini-1 is a replacement for the much loved and simple single channel input Mini-T amp. We're crafting a blog post that explains the new model and the differences between the old and new, and also shows a shot of the internals... but since it's taken quite a while(!) for everything to come into place for manufacture we didn't want to wait around for our web design co to add extra content etc. So we'll be adding more useful information to the website over the next week or so and also starting to add a little marketing to the mix.

We have taken into account all the great feedback from the community and incorporated some of it into the Mini-1, but extensively in our other products in planned for 2014.

Hope you get chance to listen to one in the future!

Yup! 2.1mm/5.5mm Centre Pole positive DC 12-14v input.

Disclaimer: We recommend taking extra care with sealed lead acid batteries, please make sure you get the right amperage rating suitable for a Mini T, ideally no more than 5A should be driven into the unit. If care is not taken to connect the polarity correctly it might cause the amp to fail, obviously we can't cover any damage done if a customer blows up a unit in this way! ;)

Yes you can put up to 14.5v 5A DC but please be careful with polarity, centre pole positive only. The difference in sound is not really noticeable between 12-14v.

Thanks, I have a linear 13.8V PSU I might try with it one day, but it sounds pretty good as is ;)

We've now written a blog post (http://blog.amptastic.com/post/70081086866/the-amptastic-mini-1) which highlights some of the differences between the Mini-T and the Mini-1, many similarities as it a 'spiritual successor' to the old model :)

We'll be emailing the lucky competition winners later this week, so don't worry if you pre-order (http://www.amptastic.com) and end up winning we will refund your money and you'll get a free amp :D

Happy Listening!

Pulled the trigger and made a pre order! I've been waiting for this one for an awful long time since last year's September

I need to get my hands on one and let my ears decide on the the price.

Chris,
Could you share some info on what's coming? I read your blog but hoping you can let a bit more out that that.?

What a cute looking amp, can't help but think some single driver monitors would go perfectly with them.

Looking good. Love the clean front panel. Looks way smarter than all the other T-amps.

When can we expect the BLACK version?

Particularly interested in the stereo power amp functionality with the minor adjustment mentioned on the blog. Perhaps its time to experiment with a reasonably priced valve pre/phono stage? Suggestions?

Hey guys, we've been very busy over the past couple of weeks dealing with the influx of pre-orders (thanks again for the support) and trying to 'badger' our manufacturing partners regarding final shipment dates. We've just blogged about the Amptastic PSU we're partnering with the amp, it's been upgraded to 5A to ensure that it doesn't have to work hard to deliver HQ sound under full load. Here's a pic of the Amptastic PSU from our blog post:

We work closely with a UK based power supply manufacturer/importer for these to ensure very high quality. Oh and competition winners are being announced this week!

There is still time to pre-order a Mini-1 (http://www.amptastic.com) :)

Just read the linked blog. Can I run the amp as a mono block ?
Its mentioned you can bypass the volume pot and use jumpers to convert it for bi-amping-is that a monoblock ? (single or two channel !)
Look forward to getting my mits on one or two as the case may be!!!!

Not sure what you mean by reasonably priced, but the Firebottle phono cannot be beat for the money IMHO.

re-read the blog...looks like a volume pot bypass. will hang fire for a mono block version if launched.

Hello peeps,

I've been away from the forum for a while but I just got an email from amptastic about their new mini-1 amp. It looks very nice. I often wonder what I would get if my audiolab 8000S packed up. I think I'd consider trying a t-amp.

Hope you're all well. Unfortunately, I broke my left wrist this week so that's a bit of a bugger. Nothing added to my setup other than new music and a cheap but impressive pair of sennheiser hd202's.

What speakers does he use?

My mk 1 has never missed a beat.

Out of curiosity I've tried bi-amping with two TA2020's and wasn't that impressed.

The only benefit I've noticed was when setting the volume to the limits right before noticeable distortion.

This was done on 86db bookshelf's but I'm guessing with less sensitive speakers bi-amping may yield different results.

But then again why not just upgrade the PSU if the speakers are load heavy?

Does look nice though: http://singlevalve.web.fc2.com/CoolAmp/CoolAmp.htm

So basically dividing the load to 4ohm per driver for more power?

Not a bad idea I didn't realise to try this.

But what happens to crossovers?

Just been on the Amptastic website, and maybe I'm missing something, but can anyone tell me the input impedance of the Mini-1 ? I was thinking of partnering it with a valve pre which has quite high output impedance. Thanks.

Hi all, thanks for all the interest and comments - keep them coming! We're working flat out on testing and final assembly right now - the first batch of pre-orders will be going out the door next week all being well. They'll be on general sale later in the month (as soon as we can get them online and available really).

Regarding monoblocks - the TA2020 chip used in the Mini-1 is internally bridged so cant run at full power in mono mode, bi-amping is the way forward as discussed with this unit.

All the best,
Team Amptastic

List of winners out already?

Hey, once we get a reply from all the winners we're going to do a blog post. One or two not got back to us yet  We're working on it!

When can we expect the BLACK version?

We are planning a special edition BLACK version for the very near future.

can anyone tell me the input impedance of the Mini-1?

With the Mini-1 the input impedance is approximately 20k per input

Can anyone explain what happens to internal passive crossovers and how much will bi-amping affect the frequency?

When I tried previously I went with vertical bi-amping not parallel...

Any feedback from anyone on this?

Nothing at all happens to the speakers. It's the amps that benefit from bi-amping by having a reduced workload.

In the case of horizontal bi-amping there is a further benefit of reduced intermodulation between low and high frequencies.

In the case of vertical bi-amping there is a further benefit in reduced crosstalk and therefore better stereo separation.
