Had a debate with a friend the other day, he says Jarre is prog rock whilst I think electronica? Any ideas??

Long songs don't make it prog. He's no more prog than Kraftwerk were in the mid-70's.

Thread title edited and now spelled correctly... Apologies for the pedantry. To me, these things stick out like a sore thumb! ;)

Defo not Prog.

I'd say 'Electronic' ('Electronica' to me implies 'modern' stuff, not 1970s).

To be perfectly frank with you on this decision I would bow to the far superior knowledge of Macca right here on this forum. He is quite the Jarre expert. He would definately know where it should be classified:rolleyes:

I would put him under cobblers, but that's just me ;)

This old thread might be a fun read :) Jean Michel Jarre - Genius or just Fromage? (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6358)

Prog..Maybe Electronica no..electronic ..yes..he made IMO the best and most succesfull full on electronic LP in Oxygene a timeless album and although it's follow up Equinoxe was decent he never made another album like it or as good...Tangerine Dream were a more consistant act who of course were more prolifant at releasing albums....they are my fave em act but Jarres Oxygene remains my personal fave em record of all time..

The 'electronica' equivalent of AOR, definitely not prog.

The 'electronica' equivalent of AOR...

Maybe, but I still love Oxygene and Equinoxe (which I treat pretty much as a double album and never play one without also playing the other). They were a breath of fresh air at the time and have stood the test of time well IMHO. His other albums pale in comparison.

I'm not really sure when "Electronic" sprouted the trailling "a" and became "Electronica" - when I first got into Electronic in the mid-70s the term Electronica was never used. (We also listened to Can, Faust, Ashra Tempel, Pre-'Phaedra' Tangerine Dream etc. but never ever came across the term 'Krautrock' either at the time - we just called it 'German Prog')

Acceptable within my domain is The Organisation 'Tone Float' & the first Kraftwerk fuzzy ;)

Rumoured that he wasn't a prolific player of the instruments but WAS a great composer and arranger, so he got someone else to do the more intricate bits while he was the show-front man.

I still fing his stuff a bit "arty-farty TWEE" and I have a fair amount of it.....
