Hello fellow HI-FI Ites

I have several 35 / 40 year old hi - fi components that are somewhat grubby

The little Technics amp I picked up at the boot sale looks like it came for a smokers :smoking: house , It has a brown film over it and needs a good clean

Any ideas whats best to use ?

Detergent / cillit bang / Flash liquid / solvent

Dont want to damage the outer finish or cause any damage to the plastic windows over the meters

Clear antibacterial liquid spray. Not abrasive and cleans most grot. Use with paper kitchen towels. Have used it on record covers with moderation and no damage.

Cif with Lemon on a damp cloth for the casework. Use a toothbrush to get into the nooks and crannies and around switches etc. For really manky ex-smoker items, Cif with Bleach was brilliant but you can't buy it any more. Astonish do a cream cleaner with Bleach but I haven't tried it yet.

Wipe over with a clean damp cloth to remove residue. Buff dry with a soft tea-towel or similar.

Use Isopropyl Alcohol for stubborn marks or removing old sticker residue

Use window cleaner and kitchen roll for plastic display windows/turntable lids.

As to the ex-smoker amp, you'll probably never get rid of the smell inside it but it should gradually fade away with time and use.
