Just a quick hello.
I've been lurking on this forum for a while, and have seen some great ideas here.
It's nice to read posts from dedicated and knowledgeable people.

I am a 35 year old DJ in London, so my main setup is 12" vinyl based (2x 1210's, Pioneer DJM200, Rotel Amp, JBL Control 5's).
I have daughter (12, soon to be 13), who is not the least bit impressed that daddy is a dj!!

My other hobby is scale RC (http://www.scale4x4rc.org), which I find a nice escape from London nightclub/nitelife.

Thanks to the creators of this site, and to all those who contribute. Nice to meet you all.

Hi guys. THanks for the welcome.
My set is usually party tunes all night!! Whatever keeps the dancefloor jumping! LOL. I'll play anything. I have no problem flinging down a bit of James Brown, or Killers in the middle of a house set.
My passion is the deeper side of house music. However I usually play the more commercial end, with whatever I fancy thown in the mix, everything from Hip Hop, Soul, Funk, Rock, Country, Indie, R&B, Garage (UK & US), Jungle, Disco to a bit of Salif Keita (for example). I spend a lot of time in Brazil (Brazillian wife), so I love to get cd's from the samba schools. Also I really love popular Brazillian music like Ivete Sangalo.
When it comes to DJing, on my floors 'anything goes', and the people who know me, tend to like the unpredictability of it. IMO there is way too much repetition in London night clubs these days. Like people are scared to be original.
I really appreciate the work that people like 2ManyDJs do. And my sets are a similar kind of mashup of different styles, but keeping the energy level high.
I've been doing this for 17 years, so the need to define myself by genre faded away a long time ago!
At home I listen to EVERYTHING! There is no stone left unturned in the search for music. Although I can't quite get into classical/opera just yet! I'm sure I'll get there one day though!!
And yeah, I am another Leo!! Nice to meet you all.

Good taste, mate. I'm really into the bastard pop / mash-up thing, Frenchbloke, Osymyso, Audioshrapnel and the glitchy and avant-garde end of stuff like Kid606, Shitmat, V/VM, Cassetteboy. There are also the people like John Oswald (Plunderphonics), Negativland and People Like Us who were doing cut-up stuff years before it got famous. John Oswald's stuff is amazing.

The trick is to drop something that no-one's expecting, that mixes perfectly, makes 'em smile, and doesn't wreck the dancing! But you know that already, or you wouldn't have been doing what you're doing for so long ;)

On the subject of Classical and Opera... I've not found any Opera I like yet, but for Classical, start with Steve Reich (pronounced Rieshh). Music For 18 Musicians (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Reich-Music-for-18-Musicians/dp/B000006E4C/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1234302680&sr=8-3), Six Marimbas (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Six-Marimbas/dp/B000005IY0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1234302820&sr=8-2) or City Life (http://www.amazon.co.uk/City-Life/dp/B000005J4E/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1234302865&sr=8-9). Reich is 'modern classical' not baroque or old school classical, and his arrangements are strong on repetition, patterns, rhythm. His music has a direct line to the electronica of today, and has influenced a lot of contemporary electronic musicians. There is a great 'Reich Remixed (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Reich-Remixed-Expanded-Edition/dp/B000H309ZG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1234303094&sr=1-1)' compilation featuring the likes of Coldcut, Mantronix, D*Note, Nobukazu Takemura remixing his work. If you find you like Reich, then check out Philip Glass (Danceworks, Glasspieces, The Low Symphony) and John Adams (Shaker Loops is an amazing piece).

Tell me that this doesn't make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up :) > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHVMVDhC-UA

Good luck :) and cheers!
