magnet regaussing

Noticed the trend of enthusiasts buying speakers 30-40 yrs (my main speakers being 1957 and mid 60's vintage), i am thinking a lot of these must be under performing, among other things magnet saturation, as one or two of you may have read my Altec purchase disaster, i am now looking at pro audio route and rehouse in nice cabs as there are more of these kicking around in pro circles, but these tend to be played at higher volumns and long periods,thats where magnet de-gaussing happens most.

So my question is has anybody had their vintage big drivers re-magnetized and where?.

Looks like you got speakers with propar magnets then :eyebrows: You can have the magnets recharged but is there anything thats making you think you need this doing?

No RB, just curious, have read continously whenever the subject of vintage speakers purchases are concerned, it's always re-cone and swap out aged crossover components with modern equivalents but never the magnets, it's like doing everything to bling up that vintage car but leaving the engine to run like the dogs.

Just something that popped into my mind while trying to garner as much as i can before i pull the trigger again. :scratch:

If you still get good efficiency with no clicks or pops i don't think id really worry about it tbh. I would'nt say it's a drastic as bypassing engine work on vintage car restoration..

O.K., maybe i'm just a anorak but when it comes to audio, i don't do things by halves, especially those huge drivers and magnets can be dismantled and fettled on.

Not got anything yet, just a thought for now.

I didn't know either till i started delving into those Altec's and JBL's, learned a while back when i was after some GPA 604-H III that such a service is offered in the U.S. to bring tired vintage drivers bang up to date and the theory how they de-gauss over time, just wondering if there was someone in the U.K.or Germany who does.

P.S. learnt even to keep those old cones before you send it away for re-coning, depends on the numbers stamped on them, some people pay big prices for originals you're trying to change out. ;)
