Hi folks, we are about to relocate from the sunny south to the windy desolation of Lincolnshire. Discussions surrounding the Tonbridge audio jumble have set me thinking about trying to set up a similar event somewhere well north of Watford as not much in the hi-fi show world seems to be established oop there.
Just want a quick preliminary show of hands to see if there would be any interest in such an event. I would guess it would have to start fairly small to limit my financial exposure but could hopefully grow in to something more substantial. I am thinking of something pretty central eg Nottingham.
What do you think???

Waste of time. The only sellers would be old blokes in flat caps selling their radiograms...

Good idea I would guess there will be lots of interest Iwould take a stall as i've far too much stuff at home I've no flat cap though..

This tickles me. Nottingham. The North. It would take me three hours of Motorway driving to get Darn Sarf and don't live that far North. Suppose it's all relative.

It is a cultural thng of southern englandshire, geography is still taught with large patches of the world shaded in pink....
Try explaining where Scrabster is to folks that think that Hadrian's Wall is near Iceland....
Count me in, Dave, and I could bring a few more bodies with me. Nottingham isn't too far from me, a bit like driving down to the Scalford Hall show in Melton Mowbray....
Thing is, to pique my interest (and that of others I know), there would have to be really cool things for sale like vintage NOS valves, quality vintage T/Ts and tuners, tonearms and cartridges, ex-broadcast studio equipment and speakers, a ton of second-hand vinyl records, and all sorts of rare and cool analogue-related paraphernalia.
If not, and you're talking mainly about more mainstream interest stuff, I'd be as well biting the bullet and driving down to where the 'real deal' is in Tonbridge. I know it's difficult to do it properly like that, in terms of cost, but the right products must be there in the first place, for punters to be tempted to attend :)

I think a grant might be available to support such an event. It could be regarded as an educational ocassion to show self centered and wimpy suvveners that the country does stretch a bit further than Watford. Doubt if many of them would have the balls to come and see though :lol: .
I have a lot of small ticket audio gear that it would be nice to find a good home for.

Sounds good about time we had something up here.
For the benefit of overseas readers and geographically challenged southerners, Nottingham is in The Midlands, so whilst it is true to say it is north of Watford it cannot technically be descibed as being 'in the North' or, indeed, 'Up North'.
There are very few flat caps on view in Nottingham however travel a little futher up the M1 to, say, Sheffield and one will encounter a veritable Lowry painting of caps and whippets. You will not be able to understand what anyone is saying to you and the food will be...confusing.
cf also 'Hatfield and The North' - 1970's band and a Motorway sign.

Sheffield! The North!!! It's barely outside the M25...;)
I'm from North of Carlisle, so Sheffield's more like the East Midlands for me :)
Just checked it on Google...
Sheffield to London = 169 miles
Sheffield to Gretna = 170 miles
Therefore Sheffield is definitely southern, and South Yorkshire is in the home counties...;)

OK, so let me get this straight. Watford is in the north unless you are in the north in which case it is in the south. If you are in Watford you are totally screwed as you are neither in the south or the north. I think that has that one sorted.
Maybe I would be better off importing hills, we have some here that nobody uses so maybe I will take them with me and hope nobody round here notices.
I also gather that northerners have whippets that wear flat caps - I did not know that before.
It would also seem that there may be some sort of support for a midlands event that could be attended by northerners, southerners and even some midlanders.
This would be a really difficult thing to get started as buyers will only turn up if the sellers are there and sellers will only turn up if teh buyers are there. I suspect I would be able to get the likes of Stanford there and some other traders. I can't do anything until we are moved and settled but it's great to get some feedback on the idea at this early stage.
Thanks for all the input, I am now off to buy a whippet. Happen.

Being pedantic it's really Watford Gap, not Watford. This is where the ice sheet stopped in the last ice age. This is where north of Watford (Gap) came from.
Geographically and superficially speaking, I'd suggest that all areas of England and Wales, north of Birmingham, could be considered as being 'up north', in terms of the UK, but that's only of course if you live in England or Wales....
If you live in, say, Inverness, then Glasgow would be considered as 'down south'! Carlisle would be almost into passport requirement territory!! :D
Honestly, you southern softies just don't have a clue.... ;)

I suggest you change your map as it must be a silly suvvun 'un. I also suggest you don't use it for your drive north or you might have a very long drive as, AFAIK, no such place as Linconshire exists in the UK ;) .
And you wonder why us up t'north are critical of you suvunners :lol: .

OK, few more points to be made:
1. My typing is shite, I do know how to spell Lincolnshire, it's only my name I still have trouble with.:doh:
2. Madrid is in the north.
3. Yes the thread has drifted somewhat but it's made me smile on an otherwise crappy day so surely that's a good thing. I hope others have had a grin too.
4. I ain't going to organise anything until we are settled. We have a house an office / workshop and a warehouse to move, the new house and outbuildings all need work so nothing is likely to happen show wise until next summer. I reckon maybe next October / November time would be a sensible time frame to aim for.
We would need to do extensive advertising if it is to be a success.

Good luck with the move and with the audiojumble, as and when it happens. One thing I can assure you of is that, with a sense of humour like yours, you'll fit in just fine wi' us rough-arsed northeners ;) .
Would that be the same Marco who drove 670 miles (and back) from Wrexham to lower Normandy in France, for his holidays? :D
