Hi

I'm familiar with the Quad 77 series (had a 77 integrated and matching CDP - a combination I was very fond of), but have rather less experience of the later 99 stuff.

Is there much to choose between them on sonic grounds?

Cheers

Get prepared for a dearth of responds regarding QUAD, i dont think many people use Quad on AOS, altough I have a full 77 setup. All I can say is that I aint getting rid. :D I've never heard 99 range but even this is old hat as Quad is replacing this as well so it may be worthwhile waiting a bit, unless you intend to get some 99 stuff on the cheap when the new kit comes out.

Actually, the 99 series has already been replaced by the Elite range.

Used prices on the 77 series are a heck of a lot lower than for the 99 stuff, so I'm doing some sums.

How do you rate the phono stage in the 77 preamp?

Thanks

Not the best. I used creek phonostages with my 77 as they had to my ears great synergy, i would suspect others on the forum will say different.

Yes - a toss up between 77 or 99, hence my query.

A 77 setup will cost me a lot less, so I was wondering how much it gives away to the 99 stuff.

The 77 series is excellent, sweet toned and spacious in presentation, but all but totally hobbled by an awful two-way remote control system, which is really what contributed to Quad's final collapse I think. The 99 series looks to be directly related but with a one-way sorted remote control.

The 77 integrated is a real bargain if you can handle its limitations, I love the sonics of the 77 preamp accepting the musical sweetness as a boon in this instance - the phono stage is nice as well. The 77 power amps don't sound anything like the Class B designs they are (707/909 excepted) and IMO benefit from the improved transistors that came along in the early 90's.

Thanks - I agree with your sentiments regarding the 77 integrated. The fancy remote that came it with never worked though, which was a pity as the claimed functionality was simply awesome.

But is the phono stage a weak link? I either need an improved separate phono stage for my own system, PLUS a Beresford switching unit to give more inputs on my one input only preamp, OR go the 2nd hand preamp with integrated phono stage (QUAD, Meridian 5 series were immediate contenders) which just might have remote control as well. Just how good the integrated phono stages, which were often optional extras, is a bit crucial.

The remote control works perfectly well. Mine has been working perfectly for the last several years I can't understand all the negatives about it

Quad 77 integrated amp -- OH - MY - GOD

I used one in my 2nd system for a while powering Usher X-719 standmounts, thinking the money on my much more expensive main rig was definitely well spent :eyebrows: - then I tried a Mini-T amp in there. Night & Day, it really was. :stalks: Life, vibrancy, musical excitement & pizzaz.
Still, the Quad 77 amp was easy to sell on.

The only 9 Series Quad component I have tried was a CDP, and that was excellent, so I know which way I would go.

Just my 2p-worth.
YMMV :)
