View Full Version : Yannis 223.5 Connect-Litz Silver XLR Balanced Cable
I'm already using a Yannis 423.5 Phono-Litz (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?p=342734#post342734) silver tonearm cable and 223.5 Connect-Litz (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?p=350704#post350704) silver interconnect, as originally discovered by Marco. Suffice to say, without repeating myself, that these cables comfortably outperform cables by Dynavector, Tellurium Q and Mark Grant and Oyaide that I've previously used in those positions.
There's plenty of information on Yannis' choice of silver OCC cores and litz construction, so see his website (below) for further details. I specified mine as 1.2m length with Neutrik silver pin XLR plugs.
This particular cable was purchased in order to complete my phono chain of 423.5 tonearm to SUT, 223.5 SUT to phono amp and now 223.5 XLR phono amp to preamp.
What the Yannis does in place of the TQ Black is allow finer detail and greater sense of space. More vivid, more colour, more rasp, fantastic resolution. I hasten to add, before people rush out to buy them, that this is real synergy at work. For solid state systems the Tellurium Q cables are excellent as they are all very slightly dark in balance - more so the Black Phono and Ultra Black speaker cables. I noticed this in replacing previous Kimber Selects in both positions. Therefore any slight brightness that SS components tend towards is ameliorated and this is why TQs are so synergistic with SS equipment.
The Yannis has no such darkness. They are seriously wide, wide open and very neutral with no tonal tilt that I can detect. I have been working hard on getting my system closer to that centre line in performance and have focused a lot recently on power cables. This has brought greater insight, reduced harshness, lower sibilance and better soundstaging. Dropping the Yannis XLRs in at this point has been a further revelation, a further removal of interference between me and the music.
It's a bit daft at this performance level to talk about extended bass or filigree treble. It's simply all there. My phono components have never worked so harmoniously and have never sounded as effortless as they do this evening. I am constantly distracted by the music and stop thinking that I am listening to a reproduction.
I will now follow on with ordering another 223.5 XLR pair for my preamp to power amp run to replace that TQ Black XLR. Too much of a good thing? I don't know, but let's wait and see!

Hi Martin, Thanks for your impressions of the Yannis 423.5 and his interconnect. With regard to the 423.5 tonearm cable which I know you and Marco rate very highly, I will definately get one of these as soon as funds permit for the Micro Seiki MA 202 tonearm I've purchased for my MK5g. I havn't managed to read every post re: the 423.5 but I remember Marco saying that best bang for buck would be to order with one of these http://www.partsconnexion.com/cardas-53481.html and this http://markgrantcables.co.uk/shop/in...roducts_id=221 over what Yannis supplies as standard - Is that still the recommendation ?
Hard to say, Robbie, as I've only heard the 423.5 with Eichmanns (Marcos) and WBTs (mine) at the amp end, and the lovely Furutech carbon fibre at the tonearm end. I can tell you that plugs do matter so your choices are unlikely to sound quite as good - but it's still a great cable.

Couldn't say! Marco likes the Eichmann silver bullets, I like the WBT 0110Ag. I doubt there's much in it.

I've been planning on putting one of these phono leads on my new TT/Arm combo. But I recently bought a new amp that made pretty much the same changes to the sound from my system, greater clarity, brightness and definition of the instruments. Might the addition of the lead over do it?

Nope
:)
You can't overdo transparency. However, if there are problems with harshness elsewhere in the system, it could reveal them.

Decisions, decisions ! - Does one purchase the 428 as is, or the 423.5 as is or change plugs and din on the 428 or the 423.5 ? Being basically skint, i'm just thinking best sonic bang for buck in that regard

Same thought process as me, at the moment I'm leaning towards the basic 428 as I have a cart to find as well.

Hi Rob,
My advice would be to go for the best option you can afford, as you only want to do this once! ;)
All the options you're considering sound excellent and offer superb SPPV, but if you can stretch to it, a 423.5 Phono Litz, fitted either with silver WBTs or Eichmanns is the way to go. Those combos are, sonically, head and shoulders above all others mentioned.
Arguably, the highest 'SPPV' option would be 423.5, with stock connectors, but I can tell you that the same cable, fitted with Eichmanns or WBTs, excellent as it is in its stock form, then moves into another league.
As for silver Eichmanns vs. silver WBTs, having conducted extensive comparisons between both connectors, with the same cables in my own system, there's no doubt in my mind that the Eichmanns are superior, and by a notable margin (sorry Martin!) However, results as always, will be system dependant. The Eichmanns, in my system, simply let more information through, allowing the partnering cable to dig deeper into recordings, and thus provide greater overall musical insight.
Essentially, they have less of a discernible 'sonic signature' and seem better able to maintain the integrity of the music signal, which is an effect I like. The decision, however, Rob, is yours!
Marco.
I was going to say the same thing: save your pennies for a little longer and go for the 423.5 Phono Litz with the best connectors - your choice whether WBTs or Eichmanns. The difference from stock connectors is not small, hard though that may be to believe.

Thanks Marco / Martin, Pretty much as I thought and as my folks always say ' Buy one good ting n dun !! Might take a while getting funds but should be worth it. Do you have links to the Eichmanns you talk about and the carbon din ? I'm checking cost which I know will naturally push up the price of the 423.5 a fair bit, to be expected - Need to see how many years I'll be saving for :)
To give you an indication, Yannis' price for a 0.8m 423.5 Phono Litz with Furutech CF DIN-R and WBT-0110Ag plugs, silver shield, splitter and ground lead was £366.90.
RobbieGong
13-09-2012, 17:24
Ta Martin - I'm guessing thats by basically requesting from Yannis the 423.5 with the Furutech and either WBT's or Eichmann's ( What I'm thinking is I wouldn't need to order anything else would I ?) His picture shows two ground leads ? Surely in my case I'd only really need the one to the phono earth on my integrated amp ?
Yes, I have only one ground lead at the destination end. You do need the silver shield, though, it's essential for such tiny signals and makes the cable very quiet. Specify what you need from Yannis and he quotes you.

Ta Martin, I wonder if I'll live to 97 cause that's probably how long it's gonna take to save for the Yannis and an upgrade composite platter to complete my Techie journey  ( I already have the Mike New bearing, External psu and Issonoes fitted as well as an Micro Seiki MA 202 tonearm awaiting install at some point) - Damn! this is some journey
Wow Robbie, your deck is screaming for the platter as you have everything in place to go for it. As for the Micro Seiki arm, go for it as that's a superb arm and should match the Techie nicely. Oh, and we will be needing pics - lots of them ;)
The Yannis 223.5 Connect-Litz XLR cables are settling in nicely, but proving yet again that silver cables need more running-in than copper. Their transparency is immense as is the soundstage. A well recorded album like David Bowie's Hunky Dory is shockingly well revealed, with low, low noise floor and incredible dynamics.
That's done it, I'm ordering two more lengths.

Thanks Martin and thanks for the encouragement. I've learned so much from you guys here for sure and it's why i just have to complete my Techie journey. Each upgrade just draws you so much more into the music / recording and I'm at that stage where I knew I had to upgrade the arm and the platter without doubt to really get there. I fancy Mikes composite platter so somehow it will be one of those, the Yannis and I've decided the ebony armboard after seeing the stuf in Techiepedia about it again ( Showing yours and Marco's decks having one fitted ;) and the following sonic reviews. Once those are obtained and installed it will be pics for sure make no mistake Martin so stay tuned

Yee har! Two more 223.5 Connect-Litz XLRs are on their way. That'll complete my transformation to all-Yannis interconnects. No downside that I can hear yet, just lovely detail and a tremendous sense of energy, liveliness and dynamic range. More when I receive them.
Nice one. Has he not told you about his 222-Connect Litz, which use bigger (22AWG) solid-silver conductors, and other interesting bits? ;)

Yes, but I'm sticking to what I know works well. I'm done with experimenting with both interconnects and power cables for a while. I've found what I like :)
Lol... Wish me luck, as I'm just off to a mate's place in Chester to compare my Techy to the following of his:
Systemdek 3D Precision, Da Vinci Grandezza 12" arm, Allnic Purtias cartridge.
Brinkmann Oasis (direct drive), Graham Phantom B44 Mk2 arm, ZYX Airy 3 cartridge.
Kenwood L-07D, Transfiguration Orpheus cartridge.
Talk about going in at the deep end!! All will be revealed later.....
Marco.
Wow, good luck with that, although I think you stand a good chance of knocking his socks off. Do tell all on your return :)
Well, that was *VERY* interesting indeed!!
Off to bed now, but full report tomorrow in a separate thread.....
Marco.
I was waiting on a system list, from Dave, before doing the write-up, which he has now supplied:
Phono stage: Allnic H3000V.
Preamp: Vitus Audio SL-101 Mk2.
Power amp monoblocks: Vitus Audio SM-010.
Speakers: Naim DBLs (with high-quality uprated crossovers).
Cables: Vitus Andromeda mains and interconnects (plus some long balanaced silver between Allnic and Pre).
I've also asked him for some pics of his T/Ts and system, which he's doing at the weekend, so I'll hold off doing the write-up until I get those. Hopefully, the whole thing should make for some interesting reading - it certainly will for those of you who've always wondered how good a modded Techy is in comparison with the genuinely high-end 'big boys', so stay tuned! ;)

Well you should beat the Systemdeck into a cocked hat, they don't even manage to stay on speed and that Puritas cartridge is simple the worst cart I have ever demo'd.
Speakers: Naim DBLs
That should be interesting. I've only ever heard them sound utter shite at shows.
Same here (mostly). Trust me, however, these don't (largely due to the crossover upgrades and not being driven by Naim amps)!

Hi Mike, Looking forward to your impressions regarding the 423.5 as she comes, straight out the box :)
Well you should beat the Systemdeck into a cocked hat, they don't even manage to stay on speed and that Puritas cartridge is simple the worst cart I have ever demo'd.
Sorry, I missed this... Lol! It's comments like that which show just how tastes vary and/or synergy with the partnering tonearm, phono stage and system massively influences the results we hear, as I couldn't disagree more, Simon!!
The Systemdek was (arguably) the best turntable there (at £20k+ I wasn't surprised), and certainly knocked the Brinkmann into a cocked hat. It sounded perfectly speed stable to me, in comparison with the Techy and Kenwood L-07D, both of which excel in that area. The Puritas cartridge also sounded gorgeous, on the end of the Da Vinci arm, through what was probably one of the finest phono stages I've heard, in the Allnic
Anyway, more later, when I get the pics
Marco.
P.S Mike, nice one. You'll love it!

I don't have anything to compare it to, my previous are a Thorens TP11 Mk III, which was then replaced by an RB300, both of which where/are wired straight through on a Thorens TD 166 MkII. As you can imagine my 401/ jelly 750L are going to be something of a culture shock

This should be intersting; Martin have you ever tried the graphite stuff?
I slotted the two Yannis balanced cables into my system, one at a time, last night. First the preamp to power amp run (affecting all of my sources, of course) and secondly the SACD player to preamp run. On each I could immediately hear the difference from the TQ Black balanced cables. I could also hear that very familiar wispiness with a glassy sting that is the mark of any silver cable not yet burned-in. Not to worry, I thought - I left it running for 24 hours set to loud, with just the power amp switched off.
Now I know that silver cables need a goodly long time to settle down, much more than copper cables. Up to 100 hours for some. I also expect a lesser level of improvement from XLR balanced cables compared with single-ended. The thing is, these Yannis cables are so blindingly good that their great characteristics blaze through relatively quickly, despite all the signs that a little more is yet to come.
What I hear tonight is the wispiness already gone, replaced with fantastic detail and insight, the already good midrange blooming into amazing vocal clarity, the slight bass reluctance opened out into deep and very tight lower frequencies. No added sibilance, just what's on the recording. Incredible definition such that it's easy to focus on what's happening in different parts of the soundstage.
Now that I have an all-Yannis interconnected system, the strengths of the system components shine through, reinforcing my belief that I had chosen them well. Talk about synergy, these cables glue the whole into greater than the sum of its parts. I have not always got on with silver, and I believe that cheap silver cables do more harm than good. But Mr Yannis Tome knows how to make a damned good cable, and the additive nature of using them throughout really works for me.
Overall, more important than any other parameter, the music is easy to listen to. No harshness intrudes, no feeling that elements are being masked. To the ability of each component, I am hearing what they can do. That pleases me no end, as any further big system upgrades would be frankly beyond my reach. I have also funded virtually all of this by selling older, more expensive, cables and you cannot know how much satisfaction that gives me.
For now, my interconnect cable journey is at an end.

Hi Martin. When you mentioned Oyaide in your OP, did you mean the 510s that MG sells. For me, moving to the Oyaide 510s was a good upgrade from MG's silver 2000's. How would you compare?

No, I believe it was an Oyaide PA-2075 tonearm cable that I heard against the 423.5 'special'. It beat the Dynavector cable I was using then, but not the Yannis.

Right, I need a little advice. I'm just about to order a new loom of 222litz interconnects x2 RCA (+ eichmann silver bullets) between sut/phonostage and preamp. And x1 pair balanced bewteen preamp and speakers. My question is quite simple. Which XLR's plugs would you go for??? I'd like pure silver XLR's but have yet to find any, so what do you recommend??
This is yer man (without question):

Btw, having done the comparison, I can tell you that the Yannis 222s are quite a bit better than the 223.5s ;)
Marco.
I have had Neutrik NC3MXX/NC3FXX fitted by Yannis to all my 223.5s. They have silver plated pins, are very well made and are pretty much the industry standard. I think for XLRs there is no need to go to fancy super-expensive plugs as they may not be any better at all.

I had a slightly different experience, Martin, when experimenting with a range of XLR plugs for use with my SR7 (the Furutech trumped them all), before I settled on using Paul's own low-impedance Jaeger connector, which I told you sounded best of all! ;)

Usually you have to wait a couple of days for him to reply to emails, as he's usually inundated with work. Also, he mentioned that he was visiting the UK for a period of time soon, so he may indeed be away.
What I can guarantee you is that when he sees your emails, you will most definitely get a reply :)

I would if I were you, matey. There's just something more 'musically correct' when the Techy is being fed power from the Yaeger connection on the SR7, rather than the XLR one... You've no idea how much I wanted my Furutech XLR plug and socket to be better, as the plug in question (pics of which I posted earlier) looks so sexy!
However, in the end, after much experimenting, even after going to the trouble of soldering two of Paul's DCSXL pure-silver DC leads onto the Techy's PCB, one fitted with the Furutech XLR plug, and the other, the Yaeger, to allow for quick A/B comparisons between both plugs (yes you won't believe the efforts I go to, in order to ensure that I reach the correct conclusion about something!) the Jaeger was notably better, so that's what I settled on using.

If he's anything like me he gets it out, looks at it, knows soldering is not a strength and either leaves it there to stare at him or puts it away again

LOL - it's nothing to do with soldering ability, Mike and everything to do with available time, Marco. Will do it soon.

It's you ! Misplaced the punter
Ooh that reminds me, ye of soldering ability, can I queue up some stuff to do next time we meet ?
:)
Or perhaps there is a YouTube of how to solder *properly* that is

Brilliant
I'm prepared to learn and hope my soldering iron is as as good as yours.
I can solder it's just that NAC4 into stupid little XLRs is about all I have tried to solder in the past years, putting me off big time. I wonder if anyone would struggle with that.
I do a neat dry joint :)

I've done that in the past - it is indeed a pain in the ass.

So, contrary to what some people say I'm not totally useless :)
Well...I don't know about that :)..
but soldering thick cables like NacA4 and K20 to XLR's is a pain - you should try doing it with NacA5!

I have a horrible feeling that NACA5 is worse.
I was going to try that.......
XLRs for speaker connections just don't make sense.

XLRs for speaker connections just don't make sense.
I agree 100%
Cannot see why IT did it
Laast versions of Iso's and Saras went to bananas.
They went to 4mm sockets quite a bit earlier than the last iterations - not before time though!
I've been in contact with Yannis recently, and based on his advice, and Marco's and everybody's approval of these cables, i've decided to treat myself to a 222 connect-LITZ for my phono-stage to amp connection. I've decided to go for the Eichmann silver bullet plugs with aluminium housings. My current cable is a Mark Grant g1000hd, and it sounds very nice, but at 1m length it is seriously over-stretched, so i've ordered a 1.5m length of the 222 connect- LITZ. Although expensive at £325 , i'm considering this as a buy once only cable! Due to Yannis moving back to the uk recently, i'll have to be patient though...
Nice one, Andrew. I'm sure that it'll prove to be a wise investment. Experience has shown that Yannis really is a master of cable design. When your 222 Connect Litz arrives - enjoy! :)

Thanks Marco. I'll let you know what i think when i get it!
I have a day off coming soon, will get the soldering iron out :)

Yo, Martin, have you dug out your soldering iron and soldered on that Yaeger plug yet?
Sorry to hassle you about it, but it's in your best interests, mate, as it'll be another little upgrade for you! :trust:
Marco.
It's on my job list for tomorrow, Marco. I have a whole day off and no errands to run :)
Excellent... The improvement, of course, will be subtle, but to my ears it's certainly very worthwhile. As you know, when you get to this level, those little improvements all add up!
Let us know how you get on (some pics would be good, too) :)

Right, the Yannis 222 litz have been in 5 minutes and there is an immediate improvement to my system (i have yet to re-build the 1210 yet). My first impressions are one of wonderment. The attack and slam of the bass drum is super fast and accurate. Bass guitar has more soul and emotion. I can instantly hear more fine detail in the dream theater album that I'm listening to. Vocals appear more intimate. All I can say is bloody hell. I have NEVER experienced anything like this before with a cable. It need more running in, but from what I'm hearing I'm very very happy. :wowzer::yay::thumbsup:
Nice one, Andy. His cables are rather special. When I read of the improvements that they're bringing to people's systems, it makes me really glad that I plucked Yannis from relative obscurity and introduced his products to the AoS community :)
Marco.
P.S Did you give Simon a call about the SUT?
Wakefield Turntables
13-11-2012, 20:43
Nope not yet! I did try but i missed him by 5 minutes. I'm battling a ground loop hum somewhere with the SUT which is pi$$ing me off somewhat.
Defo make the effort to contact Simon - trust me, it'll be worth it! ;)
As for the hum, I presume that you've grounded the SUT (using the little gold terminal at the back and a suitable piece of wire) to the chassis on your preamp/phono stage? If not, that's what will be causing your hum.

If there a smiley for looking sheepish, i would be using it. Nope, must admit that I havent. Too late tonight, will try tomorrow.
SUT earthing is very important, Andy. I found out that, even if you don't have much or any hum, it makes a substantial difference to the sound.
Those Yannis cables are good, aren't they? :)

Well it's 8am so my earth grounding experiments will have to wait until this evening. But, yes, I would have to agree that firstly the Yanis cables are something else, I used them firstly on my alphason deck (which is belt drive) and got an immediate upgrade and then I started to nice very similar things on the 1210. Secondly, ground loop hum is a real bummer, my deck is very very quiet now between tracks which means loop hum becomes even more annoying than usual :steam: anyway things need to settle in now for a few weeks as I have lots of upgrades installed all at th same time. :D

I have that too.
I managed to take it from intrusive to just there in the background.
The big drop was earthing the LP12 and the SUT only to the Naim 82 - which has an awkward earthing point I can just get to work
LP12 to SUT and SUT to 82 was very noisy
Remember star earthing - take all the earths individually back to the preamp. It sounds as if you're both nearly there. Check that the arm is earthed - sometimes the deck doesn't earth the arm and relies on the tonearm earth cable to do that. Make sure you don't have both types of earthing for the arm.

I think the arm could be earthed to the LP12 chassis. Need to check
If not how about playing with earthing, whatever fits and back to the 82 ?

When you say preamp do you mean the phonostage preamp or just simply the preamp itself
If you have a phono preamp, then that earth post. Otherwise, the main preamp. Whichever the tonearm cable connects to.

Ok, first thoughts on earthing. The soundstage is now silent, I mean deathly silent. My setup does not allow for star earthing as the binding post will only accept two earthing leads, the tone arm, and the step up transformers interconnects. The sut has been earthed to the binding post of the pre-amp. The tone arm is also additionally earthed to the chassis of the 1210. I now have five grounding wires sitting in my system inducing the internal regs. Paul hasn't grounded them in his repairs so Im leaving that alone. :) my only gripe with my system is that the techie's pcb isn't star earthed and additionally all my external grounding wires can't be star earthed. I'm not complaining however as now the soundstage is as silent as I always imagined it should be.
At last! I finally received my 222-connect litz with Eichmann silver bullets today. It's been nearly a month since i ordered them, but Yannis has been really busy (good for him), but i have to say they look superb, each cable has it's own presentation box, but due to being invited out tonight i haven't even had chance to plug them in! Should be able to have a play tomorrow night.
Question;
Are these cables directional?
each cable has it's own presentation box
 that doesn't sound like Yannis, adding pointless packaging.
Yeah, I giggled at that. Has he gone 'all fancy' now, then? Let's see a picture of this "presentation box" :)
Are these cables directional?
Not according to Yannis. However, IME, all cables sound better when used one way round than the other, and to my ears, the cables that Yannis makes are no exception. Listen yourself and decide.
Marco.

Marco.
The outer box was an ordinary looking red home and office postal box, but inside it got better, two olive green presentation boxes, covered with a white cardboard sleeve.
I'll try and post some pics later when i get home from work. :)
That would be good, cheers. Sounds like he's defo gone 'all fancy'!

More importantly, has anyone directly compared a 222 Connect Litz with a 223 Connect Litz (same connectors etc.)?

Marco very briefly mentioned this back in post 63.
I finally got my 222 connect-litz connected this evening, and  i immediately noticed an improvement over my excellent for the money Mark Grant G1000HD. Even though the 222 had barely an hour burning in, it was just so musical and enjoyable to listen to, bass was deep and punchy, vocals were just silky smooth, and i had lots of those 'never heard that before moments'. Details just seem to come to the fore, and treble was beautifully sweet and tinkly, and i also noticed a slightly sweet tonality to the overall sound, just lovely to listen to. All this just from a change in cable, so i am very, very pleased.:)

Andrew,
Your findings mirror some of my own. Keep listening they do get better with a few more hours on them.

Hi Andrew,
Yes, i'm expecting more from them as they burn-in, but i'm very pleased already. I notice you also have the Eichmann Silver Bullets, and i must say they look and feel pure quality, with a very solid feel when connecting them up. :)
Did you go for the Eichmann's with aluminium housings?
Wakefield Turntables
30-11-2012, 20:21
Yep i went with Eichmann silver bullets. I also have. This is simply because of the improved conductivity compared to Cu. I also have the aluminium outer casing. I use these to try and shield against RFI and EMI. I cant prove that they do but, but, psychologically i'm happier that they are their.
