Over the past couple of years I've been shocked at the sound quality of some CDs but equally there have been others that have blown my socks of.

With the right system and right CD it can sound every bit as good as vinyl IMHO. Sadly, it doesn't matter how good your system is, if it's a shit CD then you've got no chance.

So, I thought I'd like to start building a list of CD albums with great sound quality AS WELL AS great musical content.

I realise that the musical content bit is entirely subjective but I'm happy to live with that.

I often by CDs on a whim. I'd be happier doing that if I knew the quality was going to be good.

So how about we're allowed THREE PICKS EACH to start off.

Here's my three to kick off

NILS LOFGREN: Acoustic Live
JOSS STONE: Soul Sessions
GILLIAN WELCH: Harrow and the Harvest.

Over to you . . .

Manic Street Preachers - Generation terrorists.

This always sound very good considering it was an early 90s production, for me it marks a big shift from overblown 80s rock production and not quite as 'rough by design' as lots of indie stuff which came out in the 00s. This is a subjective thread anyway and something about how this album sounds always gets my blood pumping. Dont even try it on spotify... it just doesnt translate.

I'd also add +1 to Joss Stone - Soul Sessions, the cd does sound fab.

Seeing as I own a number of the albums mentioned on both vinyl and CD I have to comment that they sound great on both formats. These aren't albums that sound great just on CD, they are albums that sound great....period; because they are well recorded and mastered.

Hard to think of them all, but these 10 spring to mind right now;

Alison Krauss & Union Station - Live
Eric Bibb - Good Stuff
Joan Armatrading - What's Inside
Christine Collister - Live (recorded on the Isle of Man in 94)
JJ Cale – Troubadour
Nick Drake – Five Leaves
Natalie Merchant - Tigerlily
Sarah McLachlan - Mirrorball
Diana Krall - Live in Paris (probably contrary to the populas, but I think this is better than The Girl in the Other Room)

. . . and finally - I feel a bit of a cheat here as I am new to it, so the credit goes to Chris (TGW), but it's not been mentioned so far and it really should be;

Muddy Waters - Folk Singer

Talking about truly great recordings, these may not all be your cup of tea, but they very often get an airing in my room - mood dependant :-

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51rK5qVDi2L._SL500_AA300_.jpg

NOTE - this is not just the 'standard' cd (which is actually really rather good)
but the LTD edition with DVD. The extra 6 tracks are not 'just' re masters - they almost re-define the art of great mastering and recording in my opinion.

Not all systems (or ears) can handle this - trying to play it on a car stereo is hilarious - especially if it has a boy racer 'sub' in it :-

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51k7kFBz6yL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

If you want something really different and stretch your system to the max :-)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51Gv0pyYZTL._SS500_.jpg

& just to show live can actually be done correctly when they want :-)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/512O-mYjF9L._SS400_.jpg

Kate took one hell of a long time to get this nigh on perfect in the recording:-

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31gqJZg9jiL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

I have a preference for the second album of the pair.

Enough for now - plenty more though.

I see I was typing and pulling pics as RM posted!

Please try and get your mitts on this if you can - it really is worth it just for the final 6 tracks - I just love them all!

X Race & Petro oleum can do serious damage - the final track is just Yello at their most sublime - not at all bad for 60+ year olds..

The DVD is fun and is a digital representation of a concert they want to do in Vegas in 2013 (?) Caesars Palace..

If I could get to that, oh boy I would be happy:eek:

Had it occurred to you that there would be many people who'd consider your taste in music rather limited and predicable. Not to mention utter SHITE (correct spelling)? As someone once said 'Free your mind and your arse will follow'

Just found this thread; totally have to chip in! There's nothing worse than loving an album for it's music but hating it for it's crap mastering/production. Good sounding CDs should be praised! So, my picks:

Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel... (Any of her albums to be honest but the new one is a cracker)
Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker
Wild Beasts - Smother

You tell 'em Andre :eyebrows:

I have a few prog/psych CDs in my collection now mainly thanks to Snapper sending some sample copies down for me, some of which I have bought the original albums.

My problem is browsing around a good music source to find these hidden gems and I hanker for the days back when record shops had a booth with a pair of headphones to hear a selection

Yes I know there is sites like Spotify but being a tad on the poor side at the moment and a tight fisted bastid I can't justify the outlay.

You'll not find them in music stores on CD. Pretty much everything ive bought on CD has been through mail order via Germany or the USA.

King Crimson all titles in recent 2 disc reissue series. The DVDA discs are even better.

Um the 'Lizard' one is very good but i prefer the Japanese Pony Canyon edition of 'ITCOTCK' from 1999

Not me, Andr'e. I listen to (in my opinion) good music, regardless of quality. Some of the recordings I have are atrocious (e.g. Hawkwind's Space Ritual) but it never stops me listening if I like the songs.

There are people who have a narrow mind on lots of music. You for instance ( just check your posts). I'm not a massive prog fan these days but back in the day I saw Floyd, Tull, Genesis Hawkwind and many others. I have quite a number of CDs in my collection that would be classed as prog but I listen to a wide range of stuff. The only music I dont listen to is opera or classical. Leaves me plenty to go at.

Tim
15-09-2012, 16:41
I should give up now Harry if I were you, as the 'prog' you are probably referring to (Floyd, Tull, Genesis, Hawkwind etc) is what I would call mainstream or popular prog. The musical genre I think that André is referring to is vast in comparison, I thought I knew a little about prog until I came here and found that my knowledge was barely scrapping the surface and I mean barely. Prog/Psych when you get into it, which André has, is vast and very specialist.

We all like what we like for different reasons, but I doubt anyone here could be classed as narrow minded when it comes to music tastes, some folk might call me narrow minded as I primarily like female vocal, but even that genre is vast. And I like an awful lot more than that, but don't always share it here as I know a lot folk won't have heard of it.

It also doesn't bother me if people think its shite, as a lot probably is, but its special to me for a particular reason ;)

Can you give us some examples Tim . I'm always willing to learn.

synsei
15-09-2012, 18:02
It is just silly and frankly a bit rude to criticise someone else's musical tastes as it is such a personal thing. For instance, I like a wide variety of music from all sorts of genres, however my likes and dislikes are rather fluid and can change depending on many variables. André's bag is Prog, and as he and Tim have stated the catalogue is VAST. I like some Prog material but will admit that there is a lot that turns me off, for instance I really can't stomach Jethro Tull, but there is a helluva lot out there yet to discover and I am all ears.

I like to study what other members are listening to because it is a great way to discover artists and albums that I am not familiar with and it is amazing how often I stumble across artists and albums I really like. The latest for example is Nils Lofgren and it can't have escaped too many members notice that Acoustic Live has featured heavily in my recent listening sessions ;)

I still have a teenager's desire to crticise other peoples' musical taste and frankly I see that as a good thing. I simply can't do it here on AoS as the people are so good-hearted and genuine and I really don't want to upset them. With my old friends it is a differant matter though - no holds are barred and we all give as good as we get.:eyebrows:

I think that's still a mood thing ;) I'm going over some stuff this evening that I haven't heard for years, while it is in no way as musically satisfying as other CDs that I own, it still has a place in that old thing called a heart :D

So it still does the trick, but it's not something you'd be playing every day, just when the mood demands ;)

To me that's what it is all about, music to enhance the mood & take you where you want to go...

Indeed. It also contains one of the best system tests for deep bass, I've heard, in 'Nadia'.

Play that track, turn the volume up to some silly level, and when the bass-line kicks in (frequently), if you can't feel its visceral intensity, almost dislodging your intestines, then either your system is shite or you need bigger speakers!! :D

Hmm, Storm Corrosion mentioned (just listening it, again) :)

There are plenty of fine albums despite the format out there that have both the contents and the recording quality present, so will go for some not mentioned yet and ignore the count to three.. :)

Rock/Prog/Pop
1. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
2. Jethro Tull - Aqualung (especially the 40th year anniversary edition)
3. David Bowie - Let's dance
4. Wishbone Ash - Argus
5. Dire Straits - Communique

Jazz:
1. Oliver Nelson - The blues and the abstract truth
2. Keith Jarrett - Köln concert
3. Ben Webster - Soulville
4. Jim Black - Endangered Blood
5. Jack Dejohnette - Inflation Blues

Funny though . . . and Martin hates Rufus too. I once tried to sell some Phil Collins on eBay but nobody was buying, so they went to the charity shop (could still be there). I also have some Adele I never play. I tend to still buy things just to see what they are like, I have quite a collection of albums that have only been played once.

God, I have plenty of albums that have played once. Bad recordings I just can't deal with anymore. I have three kids between 18-25 and they get all sorts foisted on them. I don't think I'd dare try Phil Collins on them. Two of them like Rufus though.

Hi Mike.

If only I had the time . . .

Well, actually you're asking just the right fella. I retired at 49 (seven years ago) to spend more time enjoying life. That consists of three things: riding exotic pedal bikes, walking my dogs and listening to music. I still do a bit of work (if you can call riding a bike, work) but let's just say I have plenty of time.

So, I can do better than your request.

If the forum gaffers would like to give it the go ahead I'm all set to compile HARRY'S HOT HIFI HUNDRED - THE POPULAR MUSIC CDs YOU CAN'T DO WITHOUT.

When I've knocked up the first one I'm more than happy to start a second 100
Another Harry's . . .

I have fairly wide tastes. About the only things I don't listen to are rap and grunge. Obviously classical/opera etc is outside my scope.

Already there have been some superb suggestions and I'm now experiencing artists I may not have discovered without AoS help. I've bought well over 100 CDs over the last couple of months and 90% if them have hit the mark so it shows that people on the forum have good taste and good ears.

Anyway, enough of the waffle. Keep the suggestions coming in, I'll keep buying the CDs and with the permission of Marco and crew we'll end up with a cracking resource.

Oh, and thanks for asking. I'm genuinely flattered.

MartinT
10-10-2012, 09:52

Because this is Harry's thread and that's what he asked for! There's nothing stopping you from creating a 10/10 vinyl thread ;)

Clive
10-10-2012, 10:57
Because this is Harry's thread and that's what he asked for! There's nothing stopping you from creating a 10/10 vinyl thread ;)
Point taken, it is Harry's thread but I won't do that as for me 10/10 is not about the format, it's about the music first. Then recording quality second and yes mastering for CD and other formats has an impact but mostly it's minor but not in 100% of cases.

isuckedmandelsonslemons
10-10-2012, 16:14
Just for clarification. What I said at the opening of the thread.

"So, I thought I'd like to start building a list of CD albums with great sound quality AS WELL AS great musical content."

The capital letters were in the original for emphasis. I'm also interested in music first and foremost and have been listening to it on various formats for 40 years.

I have no intention of getting into a CD v vinyl v streaming debate. In certain we could have that discussion elsewhere.

This is a thread that does exactly what it says on the tin.

So here's another for the list

GRACE JONES: Nightclubbing.

It's 30 years old but sounds incredibly 'current'. Superb musically as well as sound quality.

Sonority
10-10-2012, 17:21

This often get chucked on first if I'm trying a new bit of kit. The blokes a complete tit, but he can sing and obviously insists on high standards in the studio as most of his solo stuff seems well recorded.

Hi Martin I might have done. I'm a bit behind with my homework but the little project is coming along well.

If you'd be kind enough to remind me it would save me trawling through the thread. If not ill have a gander later. Thanks and please keep them coming. It was a poor day yesterday with only 3 CDs delivered. I'm expecting a bumper crop today.

Perfect examples of why a thread like this is so useful

From the sublime to the ridiculous.

THE SUBLIME: Leonard Cohen Live in London

RIDICULOUS: Jake Bugg. I've heard bits of stuff on radio and like his style. Unfortunately it's only fit to listen to in the car. Feckin depressing that stuff can be recorded so shite.

Lol, overall, it's a good album, full of nice melodic tunes, but the 'woofer-worrying' track is the second one 'A-Z'. Crank it up, and be wowed by huge slabs of subsonic bass, rattling your chest cavity! :eyebrows:

Another album I'd recommend is 'Perfect Darkness', by Fink:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004VU04ME/ref=pe_221811_32370631_pd_re_dt_dt1

Awesome stuff! Check out the reviews.

This is not a woofer-blast fest; more a beautifully recorded album full of sparse but musically addictive arrangements that touch the soul. One to listen to around 5.30pm in the evening, just as the light of day is fading and darkness begins...

I may have linked to this before, but another mention will not go amiss.

Just about anything from the ECM stable will be very well recorded, it's their hallmark :)

Also woth hunting down is 'Tha Amazing Eyes of Rita' - not one I listen to often as it's not exactly my kind of thing. I'm amazed it isn't on full time at HiFi shows.

I'd argue that Rhythm and Stealth is a better recording, but probably not a better album. What the heck, have both!

Just playing Lisa Hannigan - Sea Sew - and it sounds mightily well recorded, too, if you like quirky folky girlies with a bit of a fiddle - and let's face it - who doesn't? ;)
