Interesting setup. I ran a NAC102 some years back. Are you passively or actively biamping your speakers? I'm guessing that the three shoebox items you have area one HiCap for a SNAXO and one on the 102. Nice to see a CB NAP250 in action too.

Yes, I run a lovely pair of walnut sbl's actively. I rewired outputs on snaxo 24 so the CB runs LF and the olive runs HF. Thinking about taking 102 out. Either wait till westlake offers MPAX which means I could get a simple phono pre feeding it. Or go mad and get an ADC to feed MDAC. Or get an 82!

I went from the 102 to a 52, which I still have. Originally I also ran SBLs, now it is SL2s. I still have my olive 52, SuperCap and 250s. My system pics are here:

I skipped the 82 when I upgraded from the 102. The difference between the 82 and the 52 (when both are SuperCapped) is fairly large. The cost difference is huge though as you can simply swap out the 102 for an 82, but the move to 52 means a SuperCap and a redundant HiCap.

You've got to love Naim speakers when they are actively driven. I was not impressed with the SL2s when they arrived as one of my 250s was off for repairs. Passive they weren't a patch on the (active) SBLs they replaced. Then the other 250 came back and the difference was night and day.

Have you tried the Gyro with just one belt? That sounded much better to my ears - more free-flowing. But maybe if you like Naim, then you like the sound tightened up a bit?

Definitely better with one. John Michell said that he only put the extra one on there because people had commented that surely such a thin belt couldn't drive that heavy platter properly.

also while discussing Gyro, does anyone know if the original power supply benefits from any TLC?

When you say 'original power supply', do you mean the GyroPower that you have in the photos with the clear perspex case or the basic thing that comes as standard?
I had one of those and for the £100 premium, it was excellent, but the QC version that looks like a smaller Alecto power amp is so much better.

I don't think I've heard of anyone goosing up the GyroPower, though I'm sure there are things that could be done to it to improve it a little - there always is, isn't there?!

Back on belts, my QC, just came back from Borehamwood the day before yesaterday after a transformer replacement & I asked them to stick a couple of new belts in the box with it. When I was putting a new one on this evening, I noticed that if you pull it through your fingers, it's smoother in one direction than it is in the other. I tried it both ways & I found there's a 'good' way and a 'bad' way!

John told me years ago to drop the 2nd belt because he added two to get a decent review from Martin Colloms who claimed one thin belt added wow or some such reason. Got the impression he had little time for MC's technical knowledge but of course getting a good review in Choice TTs was obviously a commercial necessity. Since then I remain a sceptic of any reviews by Mr Colloms. It's nice to know that the QC can still be serviced by Michell.

Yes it is an m-dac. Very nice indeed. Much better than DAC in transporter. Planning to try it with a dbx bx3 4 channel monster power amp configured in balanced differential mode. Should be interesting!
