Visiting The Electric Beach
On Saturday I travelled down to see Steve and have a listen to his system. Unfortunately I became very ill and was in no real fit state to hear the music. Both Steve and Valerie were brilliant in such a strange situation.
Steve in some ways have a very similar approach high sensitivity speakers and low powered amps, but go active in the bass, Steve does this in 2:1 configuration whilst with me the bass is part of the speaker. Its a very cost effective way of getting sounds you might otherwise have to spend 10 to 50 times in a shop to get.
Steve uses Sachikos these huge horn speakers that are pretty special to hear. They have a wonderful openness that throws plenty of air yet manages to capture the ambiance of the music giving you that experience of being there.
Next we tried the Frugal 3; these are diminutive floorstanders but thanks to driver and cabinet design sound pretty good. They do not have the scale of the Sachikos it is like you a bit further back from the band but the bass has more articulation. I must admit I was pretty shocked by the Fugal 3 I can imagine a lot of people hearing these and being very happy with them as they allowed me to emotionally connect to the music.
Steve using a Yanguin amp modified by Anthony (Hamish has something similar) that sounded define, I think Steve also used another amp but cannot remember the details, afterwards we listened to the Bantam slagle we both had slightly different pretences I enjoyed the body. punch and texture more as sounded more similar to the sound I enjoy at home, but Steve said a slight bit of bass was missing I cannot really comment as did not know the music but I am sure he is right.

It is always great going round to people’s homes from AOS so many fabulous systems and this is certainly up there with the best I heard. I think Steve is figuring out how to improve bass texture and detail even more. The journey never really ends. But what Steve has is a system that sounds muiscal rather than to HIFI
Valerie and Steve played a wide variety of music and it is always great to chase some music after the event. I guess we played music for about 3 hours without a hint of fatigue. The music was lifelike and fun to listen to, the system could easily catch the rhythm.
