A visit from “The man from Porlock” – equipment you intended to buy, but didn’t.

Most members here will have progressed through a variety of items of equipment, before arriving at their current system. Along the way, I’m sure in some cases, there might have been items they intended to buy but for one reason or another it didn’t happen.

Here is a list, in chronological order (as far as I can remember), of those items that didn’t ‘make it’ in my hi-fi journey:

Just one item on my list Barry, a Jelco 750D from Vinylspinner. The deal pivoted on me being able to sell three items that week, one of them being a TT, and unfortunately the TT sale fell through... Gutted :(

My main recollection is from years back (mid-80s) when I went to Stilton Audio to hear the then new Linn pre/power amp combination. It was truly dreadful, but Stilton then stuck a NVA (P50/A40 iirc) amplifier in (much to the annoyance of the Linn people present, no doubt). I bought the NVA and enjoyed it for years.

I've had plenty of experiences when I did buy the wrong thing, most notably KEF Q35 speakers which must have been among the least musical bits of audio equipment ever produced.

My 'person from Porlock' was a local hi-fi dealer back in the late 80's:

Incatech Claymore - set out to my local dealer to buy one and somehow came home with a Naim Nait 2 instead

Manticore Mantra TT - as above, but ended up with a Linn Axis

Mine was a Pink Triangle Tarantella....the hi fi shop was closing down and I was offered it for £150.....when I got there it had gone.....and it was complete!!:doh:
