Modded 1200 demo

I think about it for a SL1200 upgrade.
But I would appreciate a upgraded SL1200 to hear.
Someone on the forum in Belgium or the Netherlands who wants to give me a demo of his modded 1200 ??

I've not had proper listen to the VPI , only a brief listen at a show , so not much help .

However this weekend I'm hopefully going to compare mine with a friend's Voyd turntable so that should be interesting .

I understand the difficulties, considering where you live, in getting an audition of a modified Technics, but the question you're asking is very difficult to answer, as there are so many variables to consider.

The Scout is a fantastic turntable, and no doubt many would prefer it to a modified Technics, as it sounds very different to one. But then, it all depends what you mean by a "modified Technics"...

Modified with which components, and by spending how much?? *That* is the key question, as is the kind of sound you're after; i.e. what are your presentational priorities, sonically and musically, in a turntable?

Also, taking into consideration your fairly broad tastes in music (as detailed on your welcome thread), you'll need a turntable that can do justice to the specific genres of music that you listen to, rather than one that tends to optimise the reproduction of certain types of music.

Once you've answered the questions above, I can give you a better answer to your question and try and help you make the right choice! :cool:

Try to clarify. With my best english .....
The Scout I heard was with the JMW.9 tonearm and Shelter 501 element.

If you have a 1200, let me say with a SME309 and Denon 103R element.
With a different bearing, feet, plattermat , power supply, etc. ......

But this is the first step: Next month there will be a Monk Audio phono stage to try the basic sl1200 in my set. The rest of the upgrades for next year maybe.

Another question about tone arms.
Is a SME309 so much better than a Jelco 750D. Or should you go to a SME5 for a real upgrade.

I think Marco has summed it up. There is modded and modded if you know what I mean. For instance, Lets say a Techie modded with a better external psu, stock arm, KAB fluid damper and better feet might sound good against the VPI but maybe you would hear it and think it doesn't sound better. You may then have the view that you heard a modded Techie and it was good but not better. Take a Techie with a good arm over the stock arm, Mike New bearing, external psu and an upgrade platter then you may well be very surprised at what you hear :eek: especially if set up properly with a decent cart :eyebrows:

You are right. And Marco too. ;)
It is also a bit of an experiment. I want to buy a second hand tonearm, I can always sell it if not good enough.

I have heard the standard 1200 side by side to the VPI and that was no comparison.
I do believe that it is better with the modifications.
