View Full Version : Squeezebox RIP?
Oh dear, looks like the recent Touch price drops have not been to pave the way for a new model, they're to clear out old stock, Logitech no longer have any SB products on their web site, and this thread would seem to confirm things...
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?96191-Now-the-Squeezebox-is-dead-what-would-your-next-system-be-And-why
Just picked up another SBTouch by way of backup...:(
Hmmm, it looks like they are revamping and introducing a new product line, I wouldn't throw the baby out with the bath water just yet!

Indeed...unfortunately it's 'UE' some sort of dumbed down portable stuff
Don't worry I shall be keeping the bathwater, and I've stashed away 2 spare babies too ;)
aww no way
Sean Adams, buy your Company back!
I understand from "elsewhere" that Squeeze style products may be abandoned altogether, although I cannot be absolutely certain of this..

Crazy, surely the SB is a million+ selling monster of a product. Only a truly short sighted asshat could make this call.
I wonder if Sean has some sort of non-compete clause?

Tragic.
who is that guy on the sd forum, the SB is akin to an SL1200, millions sold and years left in it, I have 3, even if it is being scrapped the product will live on for years, dumb ass post if you ask me, the touch is dead, long live the touch!
Its not a dumb ass post! I doubt they have sold millions, I think they may have actually struggled to shift product.

sorry dis-agree, logitech is a massive concern, the touch is a global seller, I just had a quick look who I have sold power supply's to and there is brazil, australia, new zealand, USA, spain, and even scotland:lol:
MG can tell you better than me as his PSU's sell in larger qty's.

That's one of the worst aspects...the secondary upgrade market suddenly sawn off at the knees
It does seem like a strange decision, perhaps Logitech are 'restructuring', hopefully someone can pick up the SB brand, and product line :eyebrows:
Oh please, 'by the Millions? Common, I work in an industry that has parts that sell in the millions and it take bloody big market to do it, streaming audio is not one of them.

Do you realize how long the touch has been out, its in MK III guise is it not, I could be wrong of course. The amount of money large corporations spend in R&D is not done on a whim, they will have markets worked out and models for expected sell through etc, etc.
It may transpire they have scrapped it because of poor sales volumes, something will come along to replace it, I have a music server developing slowly myself and there will be other solutions, computer audio is still in it's infancy, the touch merely helped it grow up.
Yes I have one of the first MK1s still in use today at home. You can't base sales of millions of a product based on company size or the sale of after Market addons, Sorry it just does not compute or work that way.

Almost certainly - but there will I suspect be a time limit on it - UK courts don't generally support stifling of competition indefinitely.
I agree that it's not sold in the millions. Just look at airport shops, you see Logitek probucts but I've not seen an SB though there must somewhere that has them on display. Simply not mainstream.

Why airport shops?
Have you seen Sonos products in one?
Squeezebox products have been fairly readily available from PC World for years, which in my book passes for mainstream.

Pretty sure I remember reading a post on slim forums from a Logitech employee saying that the Touch would be discontinued and there were no plans for a replacement. It was quite a while ago though.

The sad thing is not the loss of the Touch itself but the way it was built around a programme that was open to all. All that refinement and upgrading helped weld a community together.

Without the real sales figures we can only try to take educated guesses. I chose airport shop because it's somewhere tech products are placed in the hope of impulse or boredom buying.
PC World will be encouraged to show the full line up from Logitek and some of their stores are the size of football pitches, the one next to Old Trafford is anyway. Amazon are mainstream too but how many do they sell? It's not that mainstream vendors sell SBTs but whether the mainstream market is buying it.
The thing is that an SBT is a bit of a nerdy purchase (I would call all of us here nerds). People have to understand it's purpose which won't be obvious to a iPod owner who wants a dock. I believe the SBT has been around for 3 years? In that time the iPod has sold 140 million units. I can't believe than the SBT has sold in the millions in the same time. The only people I know with an SBT frequent hi-fi forums, this is a small core of people.
A rather different product, but the figures are interesting, since 1973 (nearly 40 years!) the LP12 has sold somewhere between 90,000 and 100,000 units. That's all over all those years.....
In this world where we talk of debt in billions we forget that a million is still a very large number.
I can't say for sure what the SBT sales figures are but this is my logic, flawed or otherwise.

I think a good product is never RIP ... i would say it's collector afterwards :)
On the face of it, it seems like a strange decision, as the market is definitely moving towards file-based audio and streaming.
However, the mass market doesn't want products that aren't plug and play. Most people in that market are happy to listen to their ipod through a speaker dock.
Logitech are a mass market brand and the touch probably doesn't even feature on the balance sheet. In the relatively small quantities that they sell, it's probably a pain in the bum to make and support.
As to the product itself, I found that the need to use the proprietry server software to be an inconvenience. Add to that the fact that you can't play video and it's looking a bit limited for the masses.
If they had made it uPnP compatible, added Airplay and maybe the ability to buy and stream music via the internet, then maybe it could have become a mass market product. Up against the likes of Apple, they would be crazy to try.
It's a shame indeed, but I'm not surprised.

Thinking from a future viewpoint it makes sense to try and move their products away from a "local" dependency and shift it more into a cloud based format, perhaps this is their intention with the new product range...
It is the way of all things IT at the moment.
This doesn't mean I think ditching the SB is a good business decision, perhaps they could have implemented their future technical vision on this hardware as well as the more "dumb down" UE things.
So what's the alternative?
I don't see the sense in investing my heard earned crust on a dead product line.....

There's the Sonos system I suppose, similar but still supported?
Dont know much about it tbh.

More expensive, more 'all in one' orientated, not as good IMHO...but 'officially' supported ;)
I'd still go with an SBT, the best support is from non Logitech sources anyway, Triode for firmware, and Flatterman for SqueezeCommander...
The only concern is the lifespan of the SBT, but that applies to any piece of Hi-Fi.
This is a very short-sighted decision by Logitech if you ask me. Digital audio is where its at for most people and to exit the market now is just a little bit silly.
How about one of these:
Wired and wireless network
Optical digital output
HDMI
AirPlay built in
Remote control
Streams your lossless or lossy music and video from internet or a file server
Buy music or buy/rent films from the integrated music/ video store
Built in internet radio, Netflix, YouTube etc.
Free remote app for tablet/Phone
Plug and play
Great sound
£99
:)
P.s. the company that makes them has sold over 6 million units to date, 1.4 million in the 1st quarter of 2012.

...ah! so no 'USB out' then...;)
...ah! so no 'USB out' then...;)
 no, no USB. Actually it does have a mini USB socket at the back for service and diagnostics.
It's a mass market product and that market doesn't need USB out. Even though they've sold 6 million, the manufacturer calls it a 'hobby'.
It does have built in multi room capability though.
Only consumes around 5W and is totally silent.
Oh, and the build quality is exquisite. Even the packaging is a work of art.
It's this sort of product that Logitech are up against
Think how many more they would shift if only it had USB connectivity
Yup, and my granny would be able to stream to it in a couple of minutes. And that, i believe, is the reasonfor SB system doesn't have a future.
To complex, to many settings, to many bugs....
Imo of course...

Apple TV?
You jest.
I couldn't tolerate their attitude of "do it our way or don't do it at all".
My digital music library is FLAC - I'm not converting the whole lot over to ALAC just because Apple don't support FLAC.
Squeezebox will be running in many homes (including this one) for many years to come :eyebrows:

I'm not saying its the one for Audiophiles, although it can play FLAC files if you install some extra software.
My point was that these types of products are what the mass market wants.
I've got Monday morning off and I'm going to compare my ATV to my new Windows based music player to see if theres any difference in SQ. If anyone wants to pop over, they are more than welcome.

I've made the comparison - read about it here http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=20124
