View Full Version : Mark Grant G2000HD wins HiFi Choice September Group Test
Mark is either being very coy or perhaps modest (and I don't remember reading anywhere else on here but apologies if it has already been mentioned) but the G2000HD came top out of 12 interconnects in this Month's Hifi Choice Group Interconnect Test - well done Mark!
Likewise, Congratulations Mark... :clapclapclap:
Fantastic news Mark and richly deserved - I can safely say as a very proud and happy owner of said cable, it is worth every penny. I bought it knowing that Mark would happily refund me after 30 days if I didn't like it, but it took me about a minute to think... "Nah, that ain't going back.... " its still here and its still not going anywhere ;)
Many congrats Mark.
EDIT: Just to add something quickly, I was always a little skeptical about cables before I tried the G2000HD - now I have seen the light, it is clearly a very superior cable and sonically it suits my system very well.
Congratulations, Mark, the Gxx00HD series have always been excellent value for money, real giant-killers.

Well done Mark - there's so much to be admired in the quiet confidence that you obviously have for the quality of your products.
The G2000HDs (now with Eichmann Bullet Plugs) have been my reference interconnect cables for years. Quite simply, I wouldn't use anything else.
Well done, Mark. You'll always be an integral and highly valued member of AoS!

Contratulations Mark,
The good guys win out in the end, by that i mean those who not only sell products they believe in, but go the extra mile to help where they can, and not just because they want to sell products, [people see through this eventualy] but because they are decent and genuine human beings.
Once again, well done mate.:)
Anthony,TD...
Yes, congratulations Mark.
Presumably this review isn't available to read on-line (if it is, I can't find it)?

Can I just add my congrats to those of everyone else and particularly second those of Anthony TD. I don't have one of the specific cables but I do have a few of Mark's others and they're all still in use.

Hi Mark,
Congrats from Skye, and I will definitely need to upgrade my Mark Grant G1000HD to the G2000HDs.
All the best
Martin
I still think the HD1000's are stunningly good and they're a heck of a lot cheaper than with a quartet of fancy phono plugs welded onto the ends :)
But as we now know, Dave, the plugs seem to make as much difference as the cable!

Still loving my G1500HDs, not far off of the top dog :eyebrows:
You still make the very best HDMI cables out there matey!
Congratulations, well deserved imho :) Wonderful chap to deal with, I hope to do so many times in the future!
But as we now know, Dave, the plugs seem to make as much difference as the cable!
Indeed - perhaps even more so! ;)

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm fine - I'm not really a hi-Fi choice kind of guy (to be honest, I can't remember the last time I even saw a copy).

Great news indeed. Well done Mark. I've bought a few cables from Mark and his help, advice and service has been second to none. Thoroughly deserved. Really nice fella as well.

Got to agree with that . Marks' service is second to none . A thoroughly deserved award , congratulations Mark.

Why? and under ALL conditions?
I think it was raining outside at the time.

I don't understand the skepticism, if you replaced the plugs with plastic, it wouldn't work atall, agreed?
So changing the metal you choose to make connections with will also impact the sound, I can't see how it wouldn't, lead and gold behave differently.
Agreed, Martin, and it's not just materials either, it's the design too.
But then it all starts to get anal and obsessive, since the sockets one is plugging into are plated with different materials - often multi-plated, and made with different materials too, and then there's the solder used and the wire or circuit track inside the items themselves - see where I'm going with this?
All I wanted to try to say (unsuccessfully?), is that the STOCK HD1500 cable is a bargain at £45 or whatever it is now. Marco raved about it being the best thing since sliced bread up until a year or so ago - a giant-beater with standard plugs, which I wholeheartedly agree with. I just wanted to re-affirm how good the standard cable is, but if you lot really feel that the cable is made or broken by the plugs fitted at each end, then I humbly apologise and shall crawl back under my stone, since it's now becoming obvious that I'm not as "finely tuned" any longer to these tiny differences as maybe I once was. I just don't obsess with the tiniest details any more..
Apologies again folks. Some major re-thinking needed here I reckon and yes, I am now again in the position to buy a set of HD2000's, although a Bushmaster is probably what I'll end up getting with the £200 needed - far more fundamental I think to the performance of the system it would go in...
Hi Dave,

Yes, that's why to do things properly, you should have the sockets fitted to your equipment from the same manufacturer as the plugs you're using... I'm certain that part of the reason why I obtained such a significant upgrade from fitting the Eichmann bullet plugs to my MG interconnects is because Glenn had already fitted the matching Eichmann sockets to my Croft preamp, upgrading the existing ones, as part of the mods he carried out years ago! :)

Indeed, and I stand by every word. However, there are different levels of SPPV to be gained, and so it's fine to have a £60 cable, or whatever, which performs like a £300 one, or whatever, but if you can, why not then increase the SPPV and turn that £300 'giant-killer' into a £1000 one?
In my opinion, Mark's interconnects, fitted with Eichmann Silver Bullet Plugs, perform as good as any £1000+ cable I've heard, and for a damn sight less...! ;)
*That*, my friend, is the point.
Marco.

I didn't mean what I said to be offensive; I was just trying to illustarte a point.
You and I are essentially agreeing to some extent anyway :eyebrows:
I remember Roy Gandy (Rega) justifying why they are reluctant to use gold plated phono sockets on their integrated products of old. Apparently, a base metal is plated with another metal that can take the gold on top - or summat like that. His thoughts were that the multi-coating isn't a good move. I do see the point in solid silver or gold pins, as long as they can take the stresses and strains of insertion and removal (:eyebrows:) and I also remember Denis Morecroft preferring plastic casings on his products as well as phono plugs he used instead of metal ones. Not sure of any real proof was ever submitted, let alone two versions with which to compare.
Anyway, I'm intrigued and shall investigate at some point. Do these fancy plugs really cost £150 for four though?
Not quite, dude, see here: http://www.partsconnexion.com/product1874.html
How are your soldering skills? :)
Marco.
Here too -
http://www.hificollective.co.uk/catalog/eichmann-silver-bullet-plugs-p-2253.html
I have the silver solder, but would need to use fresh cables. I don't think Mark has prices for his cables with these plugs on, but the WBT equipped ones are £200 or more.
The G2000HD uses 4 x WBT-0110 Cu (http://markgrantcables.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=237) connectors. (£110 just for the plugs.)
I think that Mark will be adding the Eichmann plug-equipped cables in due course, which will also be called 'G2000HD'. Trust me, chaps, they're rather special :)

I have run the MG silver bullet for over a month....something pretty special going on with this bit of wire. The music just flows uncoloured,if this what really high end cables can do for system MG has brought it home for sensible money.shame next doors dog chewed mine extensively prior to me getting my hands on the package....

A vote here for WBT 0110Ag as an alternative plug. I'm using them to great effect.
Have a 0.5m set of the HD2000 (Copper WBT's) for sale if anyones interested?
£105 delivered - thats less than the price of the plugs!! :)

Thanks Alex :)
Modest and very busy for the lasts few months.
I cant believe it is November already and that review was back in August when the September issue was published and we are still not fully caught up with orders and I hate to keep anyone waiting more than a day or two.
There is a pdf of the G2000HD page of the cable test on my site, link is here for anyone that missed it :
www.markgrantcables.co.uk/mgc-data/g2000hd.pdf
The full cable test was over about 9 pages and a good read so thanks to everyone at Hi-Fi choice.
A customer called John in Holland emailed me tonight to say this:
Hi Mark,
First, my congradulations for winning the 2012 HiFi Choice interconnect Award!!! I was not surprised when I immmediately turned to page 37 of the magazine.
I have been listening to my HiFi system several days now after fitting your set of G2000HD cable as interconnect between my Cambridge 640C player and Rega Brio R amp.
My findings are as follows:
1.Buyers should be aware of the sturdy and long WBT connectors. They make a rigid connection, hence need space at the rear panel of CD player and amp.
2.I am very, very satisfied indeed. The G2000HD is amazing quality. I hear things I never heard before from my CD's. The musicians are in my room. Amused to death (Roger Waters) gives me new thrills. The hair in my neck is rising as the music and sound effects are so real. The stereo image is superb and the spatial scenes Roger offers move through the whole room, way beyond the speakers (Totem Arro). When I close my eyes, there are no speakers at all. There is a real soundstage and in case of Roger's music I am out in the countryside. I was not aware of the superb sound quality my set can deliver. This is made possible by your G2000HD's. Everything is powerfull, bass is deep (REL Storm) full and tight, the mid and high frequencies are perfect. Actually, this cable has no strong or weak points. I agree with the test in HiFi-Choice: the cable does not 'perform' in any particular way, it steps aside and lets the music play. I hardly could part from my listening chair and get to bed. Almost GBP 200 is a lot of money, but worth every penny. Can you answer the demand?
Answering the demand is hard at the moment, but I like to be busy :)
Nice to have happy customers around the world.
Ah ha - he breaks cover, at last! :D
Great to hear business is good and you're busy, though knowing your impeccable service I can understand why you don't like not being able to live up to your first-class standards. Still, it will be worth the wait for those receiving your cables. :)
Well done Mark.
Enjoy the deserved success.

And by way of an update I just bought the latest HiFi Choice magazine which happens to be Awards Special issue. Mark's G2000HD has been named 2012 interconnect of the year.
I also bought the current HiFi News which just happens to have a test of 12 interconnects in the £200-£300 bracket. The same G2000HD finished in 8th place out of 12.
Make of that what you will.
It's easy: the arses at HFN are deaf!! Simples :)

Buy one from Mark and if in 30 days you fail to be impressed, send it back for a refund or exchange ;)
(I don't think Mark gets many returned)

I am getting the feeling that there is a *lot* of love for these Mark Grant cables and I am very tempted by the pair of 2000HDs I see for sale elsewhere on AoS.
Can anyone tell me how they might compare to the KLOTZ/MS cables being offered by Brian on the forum? [that also seem to get a lot of love]
Or how they stack up against the Black Rhodium Symphony and/or Tempo that MCRU has on offer for £100 just now?
[The MG ICs seem to pop up used fairly often on here, right?]

Hi Robert,
If they’re Ian Walker’s, snap them up quick, as they’re superb cables, and minty-mint! :)
The MGs have a slightly more ‘projected’ midrange presentation and better leading edge ‘attack’, together with a nice tight, tuneful bass. The Klotz are slightly more laid back and ‘organic’ sounding, but just as detailed. There’s not a lot in it.
However, the MGs Ian’s selling are an absolute bargain, as they’re fitted with WBTs [rather expensive on their own] solid-copper RCA plugs, and even if you don’t like the cables (which is extremely unlikely), you’d easily get your money back selling them on, such is their popularity and known quality.
Hope this helps!
Marco.

Thanks Marco,
I seem to have David from MCRU sending me some speaker cables and am not sure if I can afford Ian's ICs any more...
I might just sit on my QUNEX 2 for a bit and see what comes in the post, especially seeing as I am away from home for the next ten days anyway.
It's very tempting to just buy it all but I had a look at my bank account earlier and it was not quite as cable friendly as I had thought.
Robert
:uhho:
Hi Robert,
No worries. I’ll leave it with you. At least you know the sonic difference now between both the cables you mentioned, and therefore can use that info in future :)

Thanks Marco,
they both sound great from your description, although I do particularly like the sound of "laid back, organic and detailed".
I think I just need to try me some fancy cables and see what all the fandango is about.
I shall continue to browse the Private Exhibitions threads... half the fun for me is the research!
