Hi
I have seen reference to the Lack product on the forum and was about to re arrange my front room using some of these products
I was a bit concerned when I read the product description
" Product description
Base-material: Particleboard, Fiberboard, ABS plastic, Printed and embossed acrylic paint, Clear acrylic lacquer
Filling material: Paper
Leg: Fiberboard, Foil
Tube: Steel, Epoxy/polyester powder coating
So it looks like these are hollow packed with paper ?
No reference to what weight they can take ?
I was going to stack one on top of the other and load with my
52" LCD
DVD
HD recorder
CDP
Tuner
Amp
TT
PS3
Not sure it will cope :( ? anyone else done this ?

I used to see the lack being mentioned as a good support for the Linn Sondek LP12 turntable. Nothing else. It's the bending over all the time I didn't fancy. I don't think they stack.....might be wrong.

Yup.....I'm wrong.
Spikes under the feet...didn't know they were solid enough to take spikes with the hollowness etc. .might even pay a visit to Ikea myself. My soundstyle rack looks awful up to that.
As i am a Swede, i am obliged to only use IKEA furniture in my domestic area :eyebrows:
My old Sony 32" wide screed Fat-TV at 74kg has been steadily on a (single) Lack table for the last 7 or 8 years.
But, i would'nt put any considerable weight in the center of the table. If the weight can be distributed all the way out to the edges, yull be fine. But i would not stack them woth such a big and heavy appliance as a TV on top.
Regards /Mike
I have found that the Lack is quite alright when you just build the rack in proper manner. My diy-Lack has 5 shelves full of stuff the top one having 36kg vinyl spinner combo. It has also been restacked twice after moving from one location to another during the years and the rack is still going on strong, so I think it's safe to say no problem :)

You can see the whole rack in its current form at my gallery thread http://theartofsound.net/forum/showpost.php?p=344336&postcount=108

Engine, you do need to spread the load if putting something heavy up there. Spike shoes are a must when using spikes. if putting anything over 20kg up there I'd say go for decent size shoes 2p size would be good.
Not all LACK is built the same, it has changed over the years, using cardboard fill in some places where chipboard was once used and vice versa.

As the original inventor of the LACK Rack, I'm pleased to see people are still using them :)
SQ is correct that LACK tables are no longer made the same way. When I built the original, they had solid chipboard legs so adding the spikes was easy. I believe it is now more challenging.
Also when I built mine they were veneered with real wood. Now they are all vinyl which is a shame.

Is LACK the usual square tables you see thrown out everywhere? The £9 or so ones?

What would the product description of an expensive Russ Andrews Torlyte stand be?
Filling material: Paper too I would guess? I've searched a few times for pictures on the web of some broken Torlyte but never had success.
I always thought Torlyte was paper honeycomb as is standard for many desks and interior and cupboard doors for example. Maybe that's my cynical view that it's a rip-off product marked up in price for audio fools (who could just go and buy the raw material for cheap)
No reason for LACK to be much different sonically if they are both paper honeycomb based, and should have similar strenght properties.
If you're concerned about weight distribution, you could always add in extra support in the middle rather than everything supported from the edges.
I wonder if Torlyte is this stuff:
TorHex (http://www.econcore.com/index.php?mi=2&si=3)
So unimaginative sometimes is the hifi industry that when turning someone else's product into their own and choosing their new name for it, you wonder if they purposely name things as an in-joke, taking the piss. Probably is this that Russ Andrews use..

Saw this ages ago and thought about doing it. By the time I got my sorry arse into gear they changed the makeup of the legs....
I use a Lack cabinet.
As soon as anything is sold as "for hi fi" the price goes through the roof.
I always look in other departments before i go to the hi fi part of ebay for acessories when possible.

I use an IKEA “Lack” couch table. Make sure not to place too heavy equipment on the middle shelf (if you have one), because this board is not very viable and bends easily:

The top shelf is stable. My 27-inch iMac rests well and firmly on it.
Using a lack and another ikea unit

Cut the legs short on the lack and altered shelving etc on the bigger unit I picked up free
