AIFF & Winamp?

Hi guys, I hope someone can fill me in on something :)

I downloaded two files of the same music from the internet, one is an MP3, the other is an AIFF file.

Now while I have absolutely no doubt the MP3 file will play with Winamp, even though Winamp says AIFF is supported I just can't get the blasted thing to play :doh: I have winamp set to recognise all supported files including AIFF :scratch:

You see this is the first time that I can compare two files, one compressed & the other non compressed, well I could if only I could if you know what I mean :lol:

Hi Mark,

Don't have a computor and know little about music files. Looking on Google though you might like to check that the decoder supports AIF and AIFF file extentions and to check the extention of the file downloaded.

AIFF is DRM free. It's a PCM variant, like WAV.

I would try Foobar, but since I have a Mac, and AIFF is a Mac standard, I don't really need to worry about it because on a Mac, WAV and AIFF happily coexist without any trouble.

Why dont you give J River Media Center a try?
You will be amazed over the options and best of all, the SQ!
And you will most likely never ever encounter a file type that wont play!

If you can live without ASIO/WASAPI/Kernel streaming then try J River Media Jukebox, its totally free.

Ps WinAmp most certainly handles aiff files also, this particular file could be corrupted. And you could easily rip any of your CD's to WAV/AIFF and then compress your ripped file into MP3 for comparison?

Hi Mark, winamp is supposed to support AIFF but I can't see an input plugin for it on my version 5.6nnn...

Guys, thanks a million :D I just got it working, except I had to use my head a bit :eyebrows:

It turns out that Stephens link did the trick, kind of. When checking what was supported I noticed that AIFF was, so I added AIF to what was supported & bingo :)

So while I was told it was an AIFF flie, it was AIF :rolleyes:

Winamp is now playing a 1411KBPS file from my PC :cool:

Hi Mark. Glad you managed to get it work. Did wonder if it might not be a file extention problem. Didn't know there was so many codecs out there. Recently learnt there's MP3HD and MP3 Surround.

AIF and AIFF are the same format, just abbreviated extension much like .FLA and .FLAC

Never heard of AIF or AIFF. MP3, ACC, OGG and FLAC was the limit of my knowledge. Oh, and WMA.

Very good indeed, so good that I'm listening to it for a second time. Yet it's not the best recording as there are oddities that I don't think should be there, & it has in no way made full use of the dynamic range.

In other words it was recorded on the low side, quite low :scratch:

Playback chain is lappy > Belkin USB cable > MF V-Link > M Grant DSP cable > Monarchy DIP (converted to 24bit 96KHz) > dCS kit etc...

I'm suitably impressed, this certainly is by far the best I have heard from my laptop so far :D
