What's the cheapest proper Hi-Fi system you can put together, preferably using used equipment. Where would you start? What would you buy?

I'd be looking at a Dual CS505 with a cheap Goldring cartridge, a NAD 524 CD player, Denon PMA-250SE amp and a pair of Celestion Ditton 15 (first series) or Mission 780SE (first series) speakers. All second hand and hopefully totalling about £250.

http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=9818 - there's a lot to wade through, though - perhaps start at post #283 (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showpost.php?p=288104&postcount=283) and read from there to see how it all ended up!

My main CAC system (which sounded rather good if I do say so myself... :eyebrows:) was a Pioneer PD-5010 CD Player (£18) Cambridge P50 Amplifier (£20) and RAM 150 speakers (£58) - £96 in total. The CD player is probably the weak link and a few more pounds spent there would be beneficial - although a Technics MASH player such as the SL-PG590 I picked up recently for £14.50 would be an improvement over the Pioneer for less money and a remote thrown in! (I use the Technics with an Aura VA-50 amp and Kef Coda 9 speakers in my summerhouse, and that certainly sounds like proper hifi to me, again for around £125 all in. :))

A Denon DM30 + Ruark Epilogues or Teac Reference 300 series separates with the same speakers. All sins of omission not commission.
