Lovely old amp :)

What are you replacing it with?

Hi Dave. Yes a fine amp the 557. Waited a long time to get one. Put this with a wad pre 11 ( ali Tait ) with excellent results. After some thoughts got my first valve amp ( cr developments romulus ). Highly delighted.

Happy days:lol:

A CR Romulus? Yep, excellent amp!

Must admit I would like to hear the Meridian -- and Swindon is not that far away .... :hmm:

I remember it being almost valvey itself. Not dry and incisive like the smaller Krells of the late 90's and certainly not as grainy and constricted as Olive Naims, mainly due to the huge powerful presentation. A bit like a big engined car compared to a heap of hot-hatchback GTI style shopping trolleys :)

Thanks for comments. Im at the end of the A419, not far from the new hospital. Pop around anytime jerry. Have you any tubes to try in the romulas :)

Romulus tubes -- I loved TAD 12AX7 valves in the appropriate sockets. Very clean, pure and open sounding with walk-in 3D imaging. Amperex ecc82 were much enjoyed, too.

What power valves do you have - 6CA7?

6L6 -- of course. It's me age, you know, you have to make allowances!

I don't know the EH ones -- they get a good review here (http://thetubestore.com/6l6costello.html), so if t'were me I'd play with the input toobs first.

I had one for a couple of years and it was much more musically satisfying than the Bryston 7Bs that replaced it in my system. How I regretted selling it.

Jerry, if you visit halfjob, be aware that I am but a further 20 minutes on from him. You are welcome anytime.

Hey - Hi Kevin! Nice to see you here. :) I must check out your other 2 posts.

I didn't realise you were that close, actually!

Hmm -- the Meridian 557. I'd love to hear it in comparison to my own amp in my system. It does look a fine beast. http://www.meridian-audio.info/public/557%5B79%5D.pdf

That looks like it would be a lovely match for the PMCs in my studio (which are more traditionally paired with a Bryston, which I can't afford!) but I'm intrigued as to how one trims the volume on this beast? Is it simply adjusted by the input level from a preamp?

I like to calibrate the listening level in my mixing room so that I know, objectively, how loud stuff is. When my monitor controller is turned full way up my room is K20 (that's to say that a -20dbfs pink noise sample generates 83dBu (c, slow weighted) out of each speaker, in the room). There's an explanation here if anyone is interested: http://www.digido.com/how-to-make-better-recordings-part-2.html

So, at the moment I set up my monitor controller and dB meter and wind up the gain on my (disco ;)) power amp until I have the requesite level. Would I be able to do the same thing with this, or is it just that when you give it full line level it delivers all 200watts?

very interested...thinking of getting out of naim gear and simplifying my setup with digital only from M-DAC straight into power via balanced XLR...is she still for sale?
