Hi all. Seems like pretty much all sorts of practical mumbo jumbo goes on here..

To add to it, hope you like the photo of the music! I've been amassing the stuff for 33 or so years. It took me and my partner 7 hours between us to put it back in order after years of listening and 2 house moves. And for those of you interested, the shelving is perfect for vinyl, and women seem to like it!! And it's from IKEA so it only costs a hernia.

The units are "Expedit" beech. Have to say, perfect for vinyl storage and available in a range of finishes..Also note the ornaments and shoe storage area which makes this a very happy compromise :)

Looks good. I have some old Billy bookcases for my vinyl and they've stood the test of time really well. The Expedit units look better for LP's though :)

Except for the lack of something to block the LPs from being pushed all the way to the back, one could easily conclude that Expedit was designed by a record collector.

Yes, problem noted and it is an issue when putting records back after playing; It does send adjacent ones out of the back. If I get round to it, there will be stoppers glued in place on each of the shelves

I have Ladderax record cabinets with drop down doors for the LPS.
The CDs are currently in reused mushroom boxes piled into a cupboard

Mmm. Not even got the CD's out, they're all stored on the network. The vinyl looks and feels great to have around, not so sure about what to do with the silver coasters..

My thoughts are coming round to .. Ebay .. If I can't get anything else out of them, why not let someone else get the benefit. A few will stay if they're sentimental (pressies, signed etc). Not sure yet what to do. Comments and ideas welcome

Ebay looks like work but some of them will be worth real money - look at "completed" to see what they went for previously - for each title of course

I love having my music out on display and to hand.

For CDs, IKEA Benno units are perfect. I have 16 of them now :eek:

Not wishing to get heavy, but if you sell the hard copies, you should delete any rips you might have on your network. Technically, if you no longer own the originals, and haven't purchased the music in soft-copy via one of the licensed download music retailers, you no longer own the music and so could be pulled up in front of the beak to explain :)

And what if your harddrives(s) failed and you needed to go back to the originals for backup?

It's not a question of "if" the hard-drive will fail, it's "when" so backup to the hilt! I'm about a month out of date here so not so bad. Point taken your honour with music rights and sold CD's..The in-laws are music publishers so I know the arguments first hand; I would never consider selling an original without deleting the copy ;)

Shame really, I can't remember the guy's name, a rap artist years ago who said he liked the ease with which he got his message out in this mp3/electronic era because his music was copied and spread so easily. His revenues came from concerts and his ego was flattered. PS I don't do rap

And it seems a shame that I have to burn (flames) so many CD's, if I choose that route, still not decided what to do with them..

Glad you've got a decent backup strategy. That's critical as you rightly point out. I lost 500Gb of stuff a few years ago on a striped RAID drive when one disc failed and I learnt my lesson the hard way! All my valuable stuff is on a mirrored 2x2Tb disc RAID array now, and the short-term stuff is covered by Time Machine hourly backups over my network. I have a Mac system.

All my valuable files are on SkyDrive and replicated across three different machines.

I do that sort of thing with Dropbox but cloud storage is a bit expensive / slow when it comes to high volumes of lossless audio :)

Ultimately I think there's no substitute for local storage. However, cloud has got to win for bomb-proofness. The limiting step is my upload speed..340Kbs would allow me to upload my material in..errm..well..You get the point. About 10 months I think. It seems that remote storage has got so much more affordable that it has to be considered. For the meanwhile though I'll have to take some risks.

The good thing about cloud storage is that replication just happens in the background, you don't need to worry about it - the SkyDrive application sees to it and looks like any other Explorer window. It always catches up in the end.

I agree, though, that it would get costly for music files. It's just photos and documents for me, and the 25GB that Microsoft gave me for free is plenty.

Hi MartinT. I run a website with oneandone.co.uk for about £60pa. They have given me (and all customers) free unlimited webspace!! They called me a couple of weeks back to sell stuff and while the rep was on, I checked and he confirmed that I have unlimited!! space on their servers. All in the current package.

At some point, the music and video will be uploaded, this is a freebie to me and great value to new customers of theirs.

It looks like you get 40Gb of storage - At least that's what my account settings seem to say. However, the "hook 'em in" advertising does still say unlimited. It's probably a fair use policy to stop us terabyters filling the place up.

I have to speak to them next week to cancel a "free" trial of something, which, if I don't exit, will cost a 12 month subscription - caveat emptor as usual; I'll pose the question then.

These are strange and wonderful times though, this is still the info..superhighway in its comparative infancy and we are going through its development not long after the Ravelling Nancy was high-tech.:)
