View Full Version : Post A Vid of Your Turntable In Action

What the heck. I'll try again (with a better thread title this time).

I don't know how many folks have youtube accounts or other vid host options; but, if you do, why not share the addiction. Every now and then I like to look at someone else's rig (...don't go there, keep it clean...). :)

Anyone game?

Umm...nice idea, but there isn't a lot to see compared to just a photograph of a record being played is there? Oh, I suppose one could pan around and show the deck from different angles.

Yes, but don't forget that the sound produced can be recorded and judged by others! Who needs 'illegal' needle-drops, eh? ;)

Hey Mark,

Just trying to have a little fun, here. It's the next best thing to being there. ;) Take for instance this gentlemen and his setup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJT-tzW1g7k. (purposefully not embedded) I thought the vid was cool. Youtube has no shortage of turntable clips. Why not AOS members?

Quite a bit of pop and crackle (well worn copy?) - perhaps he sould invest in an RCM. Sounds Impressive though. Nice Idea but you need good video/recording equipment especialy to get a decent idea of the sound.

This is a better effort with more 'modest' equipment and he gives details of how achieved.

Yeah, fair enough :)

I've got a YouTube account I think - might give it a go. I don't think the little camera I would use records sound though - which is perhaps just as well as the whole needle-drop issue is potentially still a problem.

I've just watched that vid that Biff linked to - look at the bit where he points the camera at the drive units; the auto-focus must lock on the cones because the focus starts to adjust rapidly, in time with the music :).

Yes the guy has mastered the art of Youtube sound. However he has diitched the VPI for a Rega P25 because it is more lively. By the evidence of his own videos this to my ears is a major downgrade even using a better cartridge.

Well that's nice of you to express an interest Rob; but, in truth, there isn't a lot to see over what is already shown in the photographs - it's not even that easy to see when the platter is rotating.

The only thing the pics don't really show is the motor mount (and the internal bits).

I really wouldn't use this as any kind of arbiter for quality.
If he's using the line output from his phonostage for sound then that's a different matter, but I strongly suspect that this is not the case.

Another deck sounds better on his Youtube videos - woohoo!!!

Indeed; he is most likely just using the mic on his camera and just recording the sound in the room - as you say, essentially meaningless in any qualitative sense.

I've not spilled any on the floor, let alone the amp.
If I'd spilled any on the floor them I'd be down there lapping it up like a dog.
Thankfully the amp is across the room, and safely out of spilling range.

Seems pretty harmless to me - you could quite easily take the sound off and replace it - there's nothing wrong with the vid.

To be honest, if I record my deck I probably won't have any sound on it at all.

Glad you like it Rob :); it was a bit thrown together, I might have another go (try to pan a bit more smoothly for a start). The music suits it quite well though I think - which is complete fluke/coincidence, it just happened to be what I wanted to play (I wasn't even sure if my little camera could record sound - you can hear me shuffling about too).

NOTE: A cheap camera was used to record this video. The videographer is too cheap to buy a better one at this time; but, since he started this mess, he figured he better put up or shut up. And, yes, the platter could use a polish. "Normally, I use the record weights; but, you can't see the nifty record labels spinnin' 'round that way, eh. :)

These are looking cool. You've inspired me to get off my lazy arse and put one together.

I'll record the audio direct from my phonostage via my handheld SONY digicorder and then splice it back into the video using the needle drop as the marker. The audio on my camera is no good it will sink and swim as I move the camera around.

Hold up - I may have a go. We've been discussing the legality of the record used in video clips and ask for now that material out of copyright be used. As I understand it, this runs for 50 years.

http://www.copyrightservice.co.uk/protect/p07_music_copyright

So by my reckoning, anything recorded on or before July 1962 should be fine.

Beechwoods
14-08-2012, 12:25
YouTube and other legitimate services police their own copyright and have their own Terms Of Service, but your advice is sensible in any case Martin.

It should not be taken as a change to our general policy prohibiting needle drops via any other means however.

YNWaN
14-08-2012, 15:08
Does that mean I should delete my two YouTube links? The few seconds of music played is significantly less than 50 years old.

Beechwoods
14-08-2012, 15:32
Not as far as I'm concerned. YouTube police their own content. Martins comments were only intended as a guide.

My wife was very lucky to get her "Classic System" it was all about to be dumped in a skip, luckily one of the guys doing the dumping said there were these funny looking radiator things with wires coming from them. She realised what they were and rescued the entire system. It all worked for about 5 years, I changed caps in the 33 / 303 and about 2 years ago we had the 57’s serviced by One Thing Audio. As I say VERY lucky. :)

The main system however is a differnent thing, but it has been built up over a very long time, using mostly ex-demo and second hand components, the exceptions are the Dais the Stax (this year), and the soon to be replaced cartridge. :)
