View Full Version : John Martyn OBE RIP
John Martyn 11th September 1948 - 29th January 2009
Been my favourite musician since 1981.
I'm in tears just now,but will spark up a fat one later,I'm sure he'd approve.

Very sad. I got a text about this an hour or two ago from my bro'... definitely a legend lost. 'London Conversation' tonight, and something to toast one of the good guys...
F*ckin' nightmare... That's a total pisser :(
It seems all of a sudden. Was he ill?
Marco.

Hi Guys
This is very sad news indeed. I wouldn't dare class my self as a fan, but I do love the Solid Air album very much. I assume that his drink problem finally caught up with him.
Very sad :(
Regards D S D L---Neil :(

Crap quality video, but a great little performance. John Martyn and Dave Gilmour from Rock Steady back around 1990: Take A Look At That Girl (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=9T1T3nnDpPk) live at the Shaw Theatre I think.
I'm in tears just now,but will spark up a fat one later,I'm sure he'd approve.
I was looking for a clip of the interview they did - there's a snippet before the song. Gilmour and Martyn obviously got on really well. Loads of in-jokes and mutual back slapping. My favourite moment was Gilmour talking about how good Solid Air was, and Martyn responding about how he loved the Floyd too : 'Set The Controls For 'Eart Of The Sun ... (pretends to take a long loud drag on an invisible spliff) ... and you're off...' what a star. I have an old Betamax tape I recorded of it somewhere. It looks a lot better than that YouTube footage :)
Have a listen to this, it's not what you might think, let it get going...

Nick mason?Of Pink Floyd?
I knew who Nick Mason was, but not Rich Mullins. I suspect that's also whom Rob was referring to :)
Marco.
Google him lazy arse!

For goodness sake, I was referring to the person who is the subject of the thread! John Martyn - who is he?

Folks - I've just deleted today's chatter to get things back on topic, and out of respect for John Martyn... may discussion about John and his music recommence! New threads on other topics and musicians happily entertained elsewhere or in Critics Corner!
Cheers Beechy...
Here's a nice one, a fave of mine actually. :)

I love 'May You Never' - I think it's my favourite of his. Just a beautifully understated melody and a beautiful lyric. I'd not seen that footage, it must be on one of the OGWT DVD's - I have one or two of them, will have to go check.
'Solid Air' was the album I bought for Mrs B on the event of our first Valentine's day. 'May You Never' was the inspirational track (and I wrote the lyrics in tiny writing around the edge of the disc...)
Thanks Mike.
This is all the sort of stuff I'll remember him best for...

Jeez, I apologise for asking a question. Frankly I can't be bothered to look him up on the internet which is why I asked a simple question (well I thought so anyway). I'll refrain from commenting in the future.
I used to feel the same about The Pet Shop Boys :eyebrows:
;)
Anyway, guys, let's all respect the reason why this thread was started - including me!
Marco.

'Run Honey Run' from London Conversation, seems strangely poignant today. London Conversation was John's first album from 1967, released when he was only 20 years old.

It'll be repeated. Everything on BBC4 always is ;)
If it isn't I've got it on DVD :)
Marco.
The documentary was a repeat, anyway. And the BBC stuff is available on DVD - and very good it is too.
