View Full Version : DAC Tour

Hi All,
I'm thinking of setting up a tour of my devices around forum members. The DACs are USB input only & will work with PC or Mac, no Linux/Unix. They all operate from an internal battery & can handle 24/192 datastreams natively, no upsampling.

They use a modified Hiface running on battery as the USB receiver. The JKDAC uses an ESS Sabre DAC chip & is capable of also directly driving most headphones (AKG 701s are out, I'm afraid). The JKDAC32 uses a 32bit BB/TI DAC chip which incorporates a minimum phase filter & is capable of 32/192 operation.

I was also thinking of including a USB to SPDIF output device which can feed SPDIF into any DAC. Again this uses a modified Hiface & internal battery power.

More details, users & press reviews can be found on my website

Post here if there is any interest & I will set-up a distribution list. Could I also ask someone to volunteer to help administer this for me & verify the participants? Obviously only active AOS members can be accommodated i.e those with a posting history.

Current Listing
John - Cricklewood
Ali Tait - Dunfermline
AndrewR - Berkshire
Tim - Dorset

Hi John Keny,

It might be worth doing something at my place in East Berkshire. Any active AoS members able to come would be welcome as well. I've yet to hear your DACs.

I would definitely be interested in this, as my system is completely file based audio.

jkeny
30-07-2012, 15:34
Guys you need to PM your addresses if you want to be included. I have AndrewR & John's address so far - in that order

jkeny
30-07-2012, 16:37
Just to add some detail about the logistics of this tour - I will post, by registered post, to the first on the list & would expect that it is posted onwards by them (via registered post) to the next person on the list. Anybody involved in the tour who places an order will then get free shipping from me!

BTW, two AOS members, Clive & Vic, auditioned these DACs against some other well respected DACs a while back & they both bought a DAC32 from me :) Clive's review appeared in an article in EnjoytheMusic in April.

AndrewR has sent the DAC package to John in Cricklewood - tracking number ZX131502985GB.

John, Please confirm treceipt of the devices & their operation when you receive them.

Could I also ask that when the package is sent on please post here the tracking number & member that it is posted to!

DACs have been with John (Cricklewood) for a week but unfortunately he could not get his computer to recognise them. It would appear to be some incompatibility with his computer that seems impossible to solve remotely.

Anyway, I asked him to send the package onto to Nick Whetstone for a brief review period!

Should be back in circulation in 2 weeks!
Thanks for posting onwards, John

I would be very interested to hear this DAC against Ali Tates as every time I go to his place it leathers all comers.I drag my MF M1 along but it never lasts long in the fray....(it sounds great in my front room)..it will be very interesting to hear what it can do with usb, as quite a few of the troops are running v links/co-ax cables into a variety of DACs.
I could be tempted...the proof is in the pudding.

Ali Tait
25-08-2012, 17:07
It will be heading my way at some point Tony, I'm interested in the comparison too. I'll let the lads know when it arrives.

Yes, Nick Whestone has both DACs & the USB-SPDIF MK3 device. He is just about finished with them, I believe.
James Palmer on Wigwam also has a DAC32 & may be finished with it this week.
DiveDeepDog is correct - he is first on my list of participants on the AOS list.
Sorry, guys, everything takes longer than first envisaged!

Great to hear John...just looking forward to hearing it Ali's place when he gets his paws on it.Right up my street ...a high quality usb DAC at reasonable money.
I will drag my MF M1 along for no doubt another kicking.......

jkeny
29-09-2012, 15:43
Ali,
Nick tells me he is posting to you today, the two DACs that he has reviewed - JKDAC & JKDAC32 along with ancilliaries.

Is there anybody who wants to try the JKSPDIF USB to SPDIF converter that he has also reviewed? He will be finished with this soon. You would need a computer with USB port prefereably running Windows 7 & a DAC with SPDIF input. This will allow you to compare the sound of your DAC fed from a CD transport Vs fed from a computer

Why not do it next weekend & then send it onto to Scott Nangle who's next on the list & in Wishaw. Some may be able to get together with him the following weekend or put their names down for an later audition?

PS. I don't think I originally posted this but I was hoping that a week would be enough for each person to audition the DACs.

Ali Tait
30-09-2012, 19:47
I know Scott, bought an amp from him. Should be able to drop them off.

jkeny
30-09-2012, 20:20
Ali,
I need to tell you about the charging of the two DACs that you will be receiving.

The JKDAC (Sabre DAC chip) is the one with a toggle switch. It requires an external PS of >6V for powering the battery charger board in the device. It charges when turned off (toggle switched up). This is an older model.

The JKDAC32 (PCM5102 DAC chip) has two push buttons with red & green leds. This is the later model & charges from a 5V supply. This allows a spare USB port to be used for powering the battery charger board. A special USb cable is supplied to allow this. An external 5V PS could also be used. This device is designed to be always on charge, even when playing music. So the red button is always pushed in & a 5V supply attached. I believe you might need to charge this JKDAC32 before use?

A user guide for the current versions of both Dacs:

Is there a charger for the 32?

jkeny
30-09-2012, 20:30
Is there a charger for the 32?

No need - it charges from USB 5V & I provide a USB cable which plugs into a spare USB port & the other end has a 2.1mm plug which plugs into the JKDAC32 PS socket - this 5V powers the internal battery charger board in the device!

Ali,
I see that this package was delivered this morning.
You should have received 2 DACs, external charger, USB power cable, I believe!
Can you confirm that you have received these items?
Have you got either DAC up & running yet?
All OK, I hope?
Remember the JKDAC (the one with toggle switch) will not charge via the USB power cable - only via the external power supply. The JKDAC32 (the one with red & green push button switches) may well need to be charged overnight before use?

Hi John, I'm all sorted at the moment so I don't want to go upsetting the apple cart by trying out new gear and I don't have the funds available if I liked it, as I'm turntable hunting right now.
Many, many thanks for the kind offer, but could you strike me from the list?

Hey, guys, don't want to put a damper on things but I was hoping that the DACs would only be with people for about a week so that those interested got a fair crack at listening to it. So is a week on Saturday the 20th October?

If that is the case then can you send it to the next person on the list whom I'll PM now & he should have it sent back for Saturday 20th?

How did you guys get on with dac showdown.....ah just gotta know!!!!

Ali Tait
17-10-2012, 17:58
Ok, my impressions. We tried these dacs in Gary's system, which consists of Rega Brio R, Dac and RS3 speakers. Source is Gary's self built server. Both dacs were tried with several tracks. The Sabre was found to possibly have more detail, but was also thought to be a little more up front and forward than the 32, which was preferred by us all overall as being the more musical to listen to.

Both were thought to be very good, however my Nick Gorham designed valve dac was deemed the best dac on the day ( yet again!) with a more open and relaxed presentation and better sound staging.

The JK dacs are very good VFM I reckon, and I'd certainly have one over the likes of an MF or similar.

wee tee cee
17-10-2012, 18:23
Spot on......the 32 must be very good then. you're DAC is something rather special by all accounts....the mf may well be going to the wee fella to replace his dac magic.
how did it fare against the rega?

brian2957
17-10-2012, 18:32
Ok here goes . Sorry for the late reply to your request for feedback from Saturday John , I'm afraid work keeps getting in the way of me doing the things I really enjoy - music and hifi.
It was nice to meet up again with some friends ,Gary ( Gazjam ) and Ali Tait , and meet a few new ones , David (Snapper ) and Stuart from the Wigwam.
Also thanks to Gary for providing the venue , the system and the grub
These comparisons were done using an all Rega system which comprised of Rega DAC , Rega Brio R and Rega RS3 speakers. We tried a few interconnects , Rega couple and TQ black . Speaker cable was TQ black. So system changes ( i.e your system ) may result in a different outcome .
Before I go any further let me say that these are my opinions on what I heard that day , others there may disagree ,and I'm sure they'll be along to give their slant on things when they have the time . Also if I've forgotten something I'm sure one of those present on the day will fill in the blanks.
First off was the JKDAC which was plugged in using a Furutech Formula 2 USB cable . We played various pieces of music and my overall impression of the DAC was that there was plenty of detail but the presentation was on the bright / dry side . I found it difficult to connect to the music the way I can listening to the Rega DAC / BrioR combination . I don't know if the V- Link which Gary uses contributes to this . I was unable to tell since the JK DACS are USB only so the V-Link had to be taken out of the system.
We then installed the JK DAC 32 , which I believe can play 32/192 files.
The DAC32 is IMO a totally different beast altogether . For me the music snapped into focus and the presentation was altogether more refined .The soundstage was also much bigger .Most importantly for me I could hear the emotion in Lou Reeds ' Perfect Day ' and was able to connect to the music much more readily . It just sounded more 'real 'to me . Out of the two the JK DCA32 is the one I would have gone for on the day ( played through the all - Rega system. )
We then put Ali's valve DAC into the system . I've heard this DAC a couple of times and IMO this is the one to beat . I don't know exactly how much has been invested in this DAC , but I'm fairly sure that it is more than the cost of the two JK DACs. This is evident in the fact that Ali' s Dac was the best of the day . More refined more detailed with a bigger soundstage again .
The emotion of the singers shining through.
All in all a very enjoyable and informative day . Both the JK DACs proved to be very good indeed and represent good value for money .
They have different attributes which will work well with different systems .I can only give my opinion of them within the context of Gary's Rega system .I'm sure you'll agree with me when I say that the only way to assess these DACs properly is to try them in your own system .

They have different attributes which will work well with different systems .I can only give my opinion of them within the context of Gary's Rega system .I'm sure you'll agree with me when I say that the only way to assess these DACs properly is to try them in your own system .great synopsis brian....alis dac is maybe so far up the league that to compare it with mainstream production dacs aint fair....the jkeny dacs seem to have held theyre head up against exulted company...the 32 does appeal to me.
might have to take him up on the free trial period.

try the Vlink 192 Tony... whoa.

Only had a few hours on it and sounded gash out the box, but already its a lot better than the standard one I had, the Mk 2 I brought to Ali's.

My system wasn't singing with the Vlink initially, warmed up as the afternoon went on and sounded fantastic with Ali's valve Dac.

One thing though about the JK Dacs, the 32 was the best out the two, but a couple of the guys see-sawed back, missing a bit of the zing of the sabre that was on before If I remember right.

Couldn't really tell Tony, didn't do a direct comparison.
The rega was plying through a rough sounding (about 10 hours on it) Vlink 192 and wasn't sounding particularly fantastic tbh.

It sounded a lot better with the old Vlink which which tells you something.
(There is a significant step up from the std to the 192)

Teh JK dacs were direct USB connection so the Vlink was out of circuit, albeit warming up as the afternoon went on.

This is like waiting at a bus stop ...... they all come at once :)
First thing - Ali, Scott is no longer interested, I've sent you the next address.

Thanks for the impressions, guys!

Yes, you have identified sonic differences between the two DACs. One thing I would suggest to all potential auditioners (running on PCs) is to download & try the demo version of the playback software, Jplay (Jplay.eu/download) - this is a revealtion & equivalent to changing to a new, revealing system.

One other difference between the DACs - the Sabre based JKDAC will drive most headphones straight out of the RCA outs, the DAC32 will not.

Also, the JKDAC is €400 while the DAC32 is €500.

If you have the time (only takes a minute to set-up) try Jplay - download, install it & reboot. Start Jplaymini & copy (CTRL-C in explorer) a file(s) into the Jplay program - press space bar to play it.

Yes, Clive says it all but were you using JRiver+Jplay or JRiver on it's own?

Hi John, Clive.

I tried Jplay myself with Jriver 17 and to be honest I didn't really like what it did to the sound.
I understand (kinda!) what it tried to do, but I find Fidelizer ran with Jriver does a better job of the same thing.

Just my opinion of course, could be a system dependant thing.

Also I wasn't sure about being unable to use the computer for anything else whilst listening to music?
I'm maybe different from the typical Jplay user in that I like exploring the net finding out about the artists etc whilst the music is playing.

Haven't tried that other one you mentioned Clive, always prefer to hear these things for myself, so can you download the software...or?

jkeny
17-10-2012, 22:42
Gary,
JplayMini is the standalone program that comes with Jplay. So no front-end JRiver or Foobar (or iTunes) needed. It is the best sounding of the Jplay options. Just follow my quick instructions in post 124 to get it working. Use a buffer of 1 sample (DirectLink) if you can!
Surfing while playing/listening to music is allowed :) Nothing stopping in you doing this unless you use Hibernate mode in Jplay which isn't strictly needed.

Jplay won't play MP3 files & AFAIK won't deal with streamed music but if you want your PC audio sounding better than your CD player then this is the first & important step!

John
19-10-2012, 04:25
Jplay mini is my preferred choice of media playback, best in extreme hibernation but not enough ram on my laptop to allow this, but full hibernation mode is very good.
When at friends I often shown them the difference of what JPlay does compaired to Itunes, Itunes Jplay, mini and full hibernation. I find full hibernation very close to analogue and now have the the view that source playback has the biggest influnce on sound, even more so than the DAC

This should also work for hiface 1 and young dac.

I'm using a DAC32, I was just pointing out it should work for most other m2tech usb convertors.

There are a couple of quirks, but mainly due to linux rather than driver problems, like having to start them everytime after reboot.

Sound quality sounds promising but I'm not jumping to any conclusions just yet.

Ok, Tony, PM me your name & address.
This isn't directed at anyone in particular but can I reiterate some things I already posted, I think:
- Can auditioners use the playback software Jplaymini if using a PC. The program is contained in the demo download from here jplay.eu/download
- Please move this on in a week which is plenty of time to get to know the sound of it. It's not fair to others to hold it for longer. If you are not able to audition it in this time period then please don't take it.
- Can you send it onwards by registered post & post a tracking number when done!

Tony,
I'm sure my DACs would give your system an upgrade but they are designed to deliver top quality sound. I have recommended Jplay as a first step towards this goal & to make at least one variable common across all auditions. It takes 5 mins to download & install. Note that it won't play MP3 files as it also is designed for best sound.

It doesn't make sense to audition the DACs otherwise - you are not hearing them as intended!.

It really should be a huge upgrade in sound as it basically closing a lot of functions going on in the computer in my system and every system I tried it in,it makes a huge difference. The demo version is crap as keeps cutting out for 30 seconds every few mins

Hi Tony,
could you do me a favour mate (sorry) and download a free program called "Fidelizer"?

It does similar as what JPlay does (shuts down windows background stuff) and I'm curious about how it compares.

Just wonder if you need Jplay to get the JK dacs to be their best?
Nothing sinister, just curious.

http://www.windowsxlive.net/fidelizer/

It does similar as what JPlay does (shuts down windows background stuff) and I'm curious about how it compares.I don't think Jplay shuts down processes but it does reassign process priorities. I also believe that it handles memory in a different way using large page sizes - this is not the just allocating a slice of contiguous memory & loading the WAV file into it. So Fidelizer will bring you some of the way but not all the way to the sound of Jplay.

Just wonder if you need Jplay to get the JK dacs to be their best?
Nothing sinister, just curious. In the sense that you asked the question, the answer is no, JK DACs do NOT NEED Jplay but Jplay is the best sounding playback software that I've heard on the PC & will improve all playback. I recommend it in my user guide & suggested it here so that when people audition & post impressions of a device of mine, there is one less variable to wonder about. By all means try with & without Jplay for comparison.

Computer audio is now a serious contender for top drawer sound. I mean as good as your best CD or turntable playback, not just background music or games sound effects. But you will only get to this level of sound if you deal with the variables. My devices are a major step towards this goal & I'm suggesting Jplay as a software approach which deals with another variable & a further step towards this goal. I have a number of other recommendations in my user guide which I have found to be beneficial. Don't be fooled by the modest price of this DAC, it will compete against many top-flight DACs, just read the reviews.

You won't be able to play spotify Premium with Jplay - it uses 320kbps MP3, I think. Jplay won't play MP3 files, it is designed to work with lossless files as it too is targeting best sound quality.

Try playing your locally stored FLAc or WAV files & compare the sound using iTunes Vs JplayMini - let us know if you hear any difference?

As I said, there are many variables to address if you want to improve your system. if you know for sure that the sibilance results from your DAC then trying another DAC could work. If you have heard other DACs in your system & they had no sibilance then it most likely is your problem

I'm just asking if you are sure that is where your problem lies? Ground noise/loop issues can often give rise to sibilance which is why I asked you about laptop playback.

http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/1451/192vlinkcomparison.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/189/192vlinkcomparison.jpg/)

Totally different circuit inside, apart from doing 192 uses a much better usb chip, better power regulation, has galvanic isolation on both inputs and separate crystals instead of "one size fits all" in the original Vlink.

it makes everything played through it sound better, even 16/44 redbook.
And I mean a lot better...

Sounds not so good out the box, needs a couple of weeks to burn in imo.
That was the same with the original Vlink though.

Great review of it here on ComputerAudiophile
http://www.computeraudiophile.com/content/471-musical-fidelity-v-link-192-usb-s-pdif-converter-review/

The V-Link 192 costs roughly 20% as much as the best USB to S/PDIF converter I've used (BADA Alpha USB) yet it delivers near 90% of the sonic performance. I highly recommend the V-Link 192 for the vast majority of users who don't feel the urge to spend vast amounts of money squeezing the remaining few percentage points of performance from their systems. At $399 the V-Link 192 is a uncomplicated device that plays a critical role and is a tremendous overachiever.

Fantastic upgrade for not stupid money.

It comes with a BNC/RCA adapter & another gizmo, an RF attenuator (read about it in the TNT review)
What is your DAC?

The JKSPDIF MK3 USB-SPDIF converter is currently in Lockerbie. It will be a week before it is available!

It seems difficult to get people to send on these DACs after a week - sorry for the delay.
The two DACs will be posted to Wee Tee Cee on Monday. Does this suit? Let me know so that I can redirect elsewhere if not suitable.
Can I ask that it is auditioned next weekend & sent onward on Monday 12th. OK?

OK, don't feel under obligation - if you're not ready for them or it's not a suitable time, then just pass them on, I won't mind. I'll PM you the next address in line.

John ,
They arrived today...There is no instructions or disk to load the driver. How do I go about getting the lap top to speak to them. Are they both usb powered or is it just the 32?

User manual is linked to from the product page http://www.johnkenny.biz/home-1/jkdac32
All instructions are in that, I believe!
Neither DAC is USB powered - they are battery powered :)

Oh, I thought you would hear it in Wee Tee Cee's place but he seems to be having difficulty setting it up & said yesterday that he is posting it on. I asked him if he wanted to hand it over to one of you guys that had planned to listen to it at his place but I don't know where it's at now as I haven't heard back from him.

It's getting too difficult to organise all the to-ing & fro-ing, delivery & receipt, technical support etc. of these devices (I did ask for a volunteer to administer this, in my first post). It's getting very busy for me & getting too near Christmas & the madness that ensues.

Actually, I think the DACs he has are probably low in charge - I'm just looking at the last person's email who had the DACs & he says that the red light no longer shines when the external power supply is plugged in. This would indicate that either the charger or external PS is no longer working! Wee Tee Cee, if you contact me maybe we can work out what the issue is before you post it onwards - it may need returning to me?

John,
I let you know I couldn't get the dacs to play through my lap top on Tuesday evening despite numerous attempts to down load players etc... I asked for the next address to post it onto fully aware I would have to absorb the postage costs without having heard a note. you supplied this and I packaged up the dacs and made out a postage address. 2039 hrs last night you sent a pm requesting I send it onto someone else!
As I had secured the services of my good lady to undertake post office duties the next day taking time out of her work, this understandably went down like a lead balloon.
I can contact Gary and see If he wants them, I'm willing to deliver them to him on the other side of Glasgow(and then into the nether regions of Lanarkshire) for the simple reason that having read the reviews, I cannot but help but believe you are on the right track and the potential is there.
The proof is in the pudding...Gary is computer savvy and then some!

Let me know if you want them sent on or delivered to Gary.

Anthony, thanks for the reply.
I tried to help you via PM yesterday but got no answer after I asked
"Oh, what computer PC or Mac?
Both DAcs were the same - no sound?
Is your USB cable good?"

So I presumed you weren't bothered trying to sort it out & because the address of the person I had given to you on Monday was not very technical, I thought it best not to send him DACs that might not be working. I had hoped you understood this & hence the change of address?

If Gary wants to audition them I'm sure you guys can work out something? Otherwise I would be grateful if you posted them onto the address I gave you last, Dan Knight! Let me know what you decide to do, please.

PS. if the lights are shining as they should then it appears not to be a power or charger issue?

Ok, if both DACs have no sound then it is unlikely to be a problem in the DACs - chances of both failing is unlikely (unless both have battery depleted). Seems to be some issue with your system which I'm sure we could sort out if you wanted to. But if you would prefer to pass, then I understand.

PS. If red light is shining strongly when PS is plugged in & DAC turned off, then the battery is charging strongly - it should be left on charge until red light fades & goes out = fully charged.

I had the JK32DAC in my system for over a week now.
Initially I had trouble installing the driver but a friend helped me so I could finally hear this DAC in my system
I use a JPLAY based system on a Windows 8 laptop
I only have VALAB balanced Tenor based DAC which is a nice DAC but the JK32 takes things a bit further
The DAC is very well balanced it has a really clean detailed sound that just l go deeper into the recording
Its a impressive DAC and now want to add this to my system
