View Full Version : 1930s lead-light stained glass windows - are they worth anything

My mum is having her house double glazed and save for a couple of small windows she has promised a neighbour, who is restoring his house, she is intending to let the installers take the rest of the windows (there are quite a few). The house was built in 1933 and the stained windows are art deco design. Is it worthwhile keeping the windows to sell?

If the windows can be removed intact then I would say they are worth keeping to recoup some of the expense of the installation.

Hi Martin,

I'm no expert, but I'd keep them. Search ebay for stained glass panels to give you some idea.

Kind Regards,
Stephen

Hi Stephen -

I've done an e-bay search but not much on there that is similar, other than this piece which is from the same era - the design is different but otherwise this is the sort of thing I am talking about. No bids on this yet, though:

I would imagine you could move them on to a reclamation shop/company. When I was looking for a nice old fireplace they had all sorts of period bits and bobs at top prices.

Yes, but it will involve quite a bit of hassle (I would have to take tme off work, go up there and sort it all out) so needs to be worth it financially i,e more than a couple of hundred quid. My mother doesn't want the aggravation.

Hi Martin,

If you search for stained glass panels you'll find more windows being offered.

Kind Regards,
Stephen

Cheers, found that now. Doesn't look like it is worth that much, maybe £30-£40 a panel. And that's retail, I would need to sell it as a job lot. Oh well at least my mind is at rest that the installers are not going to be walking off with thousands of quids worth of windows :)

Hi Martin,

I am in the window business and can confirm that these glass panels can fetch about £25 to £40 pounds each, they are worth more if there is a larger amount of original coloured glass in the designs, this is often removed and used in repairs by specialist lead work companies working on restoration projects.

Just get an assurance that they'll not end up in landfill if you let the installers take them. Hopefully they will have contacts that will ensure they eventually end up with someone who will enjoy them and put them back to their original use.
