Suspect Needle?

Hi all

My record player has started dropping a channel intermittently with a bit crackle. I've ruled out the amp and speakers as the culprit.

The arm was sent away to be re-wired by Rega last December, so I was thinking it could be the stylus. The problem seems to be far worse at the beginning and end of the LP, does this suggest my needle is not long for this world?

No, not really - doesn't sound like the stylus. It may be the connections between the arm wiring and the cartridge pins, or where the arm wire is terminated at the amp end. But if the problem depends on the arm position, it sounds like the internal arm wiring - specifically, where it passes through the bearing.

I bought the deck 2nd hand for £40 - it worked fine for a short while and then the left and right channels started dropping and crackling quite a lot so I took it to my local Sevenoaks and asked them to send it to Rega for repair and they re-wired it. That was last December.

I spoke to Rega earlier today and they said send it back no problem, which I'll do tomorrow.
