View Full Version : New Sub-Forum for Beresford Products

Stan's DACs and other products are very popular with members here, so we've created a new sub-forum called Beresford Babble (provisional name) for all things Beresford. I will start moving threads there later on today, so please be patient.

It seems we've settled on Beresford Banter - excellent. Ladies and gentlemen, start your (digital) engines!

I don't understand! I asked a civil question a few weeks ago asking about a tube forum and was bombarded with negative replies yet it seems fine to have a sub-forum about a given product. Mmm, baffled

There do seem to be a few inconsistencies regarding sub-fora. I should probably take some of the blame as it was I who originally suggested setting up individual sub-fora for the various TT drive types over a year ago, and yet we still do not have a sub-forum for belt drive TT's, why? From the responses I have read from Marco and various mods, the reason seems to be a discriminatory bias against this type of drive system, not a sound reason in itself IMO, and anyone who subsequently comments that there is not enough interest on AoS for BD decks needs either there eyes or head examined.

Bearing in mind the passion for valves on AoS it would seem remiss not to implement a specific sub-forum for glowing bottles, seeing as some of the management are so keen to promote the ownership of valve devices as aspirational.

I think Steve the point is that through no specific design, AoS has become the "home" of Bereford enthusiasts (as well as the Techie turntable) and a lot of folks come here specifically because of Stan's products, so like the Techie, it makes sense to keep those areas distinct.

We'll take your point on board though and ruminate on it behind the lilac curtains... :)

Dave, with respect, that is complete nonsense. I have explained the situation before many times, so goodness knows why you (or anyone else) has to ask yet again... There is no discriminatory bias against belt-drive turntables. It's simply that we don't want to split the forum up into any more sub-sections, as there are more than enough already.

Once again for the 'hard of hearing'... The Techie sub-forum was a much needed exception, due to the massive interest there is here for that particular turntable and the modifying of it thereof. The same applies to the Beresford DAC. Then, Andre asked me in private if we could also have a sub-forum for idler T/Ts, as he thought that there would be sufficient demand for it.

I was sceptical and didn't really want to do it, as I knew that it would set a precedent for every other bugger asking for a sub-forum for their favourite type of turntable, which is what is happening now  but I gave in and decided to give it a go. Now 'Idle Vice' ticks along, but it's not exactly a hive of activity, so it may, sooner rather than later, end up being amalgamated into Analogue Art, leaving the Techie section as the only T/T sub-forum. Time will tell.

Therefore, we certainly aren't going to open another sub-forum for BD T/Ts, which would probably end up meeting the same fate, particularly, and please let this bit penetrate, as belt-drive turntable discussion currently has the whole main area of Analogue Art to itself, therefore that is effectively acting as its own dedicated section!!

I'm sorry for being hard on you here, but you've no idea how bloody frustrating it is to think you've explained the reason for something thoroughly, MANY times, only for someone to still keep asking, 'why?' Therefore, please, let's have no further mention of any more fooking sub-forums!! :)

Where on earth did you get that idea from? Certainly not from me! We don't do "aspirational" anything here. Yes, we like valves, but we also like a lot of other things on AoS! In reality, there are probably more members using solid-state kit here than valve gear, but that fact seems to go unnoticed.

Anyway, again, there is no need for a sub-forum for lovers of glowing bottles, as 'The Artist's Palette' already exists as an area where discussions of tubes goes, and anything else pertaining to valve equipment itself goes into Blank Canvas or other dedicated sections of the forum, depending on the subject content.

Therefore, listen up people, and listen well..... THERE WILL BE NO FURTHER SUB-FORUMS CREATED ON AOS FOR THE FORSEEABLE FUTURE, so please do not mention this matter again. Cheers!!

Marco, maybe the answer is to create a sub-forum for discussion about whether any more sub-forums should be created.

Sorry, couldn't resist :-)

Time will tell.

Just to clarify, I remember the conversation well and I remember you being sceptical. Perhaps you also remember that I supported you 100% when you proposed the Techepedia section, as something clearly had to be done to collate all the useful info on the Techy that was cluttering up Analogue Art. Once those changes were implemented things were chugging along nicely until Idle Vice popped up out of nowhere. Why? Because there was some whining going on about Techies having their own section so why shouldn't idler drives have one of their very own too? And thus Idle Vice was born.

Now frankly I couldn't give a monkeys arse whether there is a BD forum or not. It's your forum Marco and if you wanted to implement a section on Spiffing Thai Lady Boys there's nothing the rest of the membership could do about it, except vote with their feet if they didn't like it of course. I, and I don't think I am alone here, would just like to see some consistency in the message filtering down from the top. We are knee deep in sub-fora at the moment which seems rather 'off-message' to me... :eyebrows:

You don't find valve amps to be an aspirational product? I'm surprised to say the least...

Marco
21-02-2013, 09:41
Thanks for your input, Dave, which is noted.

However, I've already explained the situation very thoroughly in my previous post, so have no desire to go round in circles again. The current set-up will be remaining for the foreseeable future.

Please let's leave it there now and move on :)

Marco.

P.S I'm totally against ANY aspect of audio being 'aspirational'. I utterly ahbor the concept.

I am genuinely confused, surely we all aspire to hear more of the music which is why we choose to upgrade our equipment?

I am just as confused about that TBH...

Perhaps you'd all be more comfortable if I just left the forum...

I think what Marco's getting at, Dave, is that we are all (hopefully) pursuing our passion for music first and foremost. The hi-fi systems that we have built are simply a means to follow that end - to allow us to reproduce great music in our homes.

Having aspirations to own valve/solid state/cat's whisker equipment, therefore, is pursuing equipment for some perceived status value rather than concentrating on the music. Keeping up with the Jones's sort of thing. I can understand why Marco gets annoyed with the concept. It's the classic chap with a £50k gleaming hi-fi system and a collection of 15 records.

By the way, my little fun-poke was all about why have only aspirations to valve equipment? Why not aspire to great solid state equipment? :)

I'd suggest everyone aspires to listen to more music and get that music to sound the best they can. That's what I aspire to and as I'm semi-retired I haven't more time than most. Still not enough hours in day though.

Ah okay, now I see where the wires have crossed. It's a kind of chicken and egg situation though, isn't it? Yes, I aspire to hear music at its best at home, but to do that I aspire to own equipment that will allow me to achieve that goal. Ergo, there is equipment I aspire to own which would take me there. Recent acquisitions which have put a big tick in that box are the Valhalla and the Bushmaster... ;)

Spot on, Martin. That's exactly it. I haven't 'aspired' to own ANY of the possessions I have, let alone the components that make up my hi-fi system! Through time, they've simply been naturally acquired.

Having aspirations (strong desires) to own material possessions of any description, IMO, breeds a rather unhealthy mindset. This is precisely what feeds today's materialistic society. It's the concept of 'bettering' oneself, simply through the ownership of specific material possessions, and 'Keeping up with the Jones's', which I find abhorrent and rather vulgar.

By the way, my little fun-poke was all about why have only aspirations to valve equipment? Why not aspire to great solid state equipment? :)

Indeed. There's nothing uniquely special about valve equipment, in terms of its 'aspirational factor'!

There is a reason for the idea behind a sub-forum for my DACs. And that is based around the commonly held view around the world that the Art of Sound is THE home forum for Beresford DACs. It is of course easy to see why, since I have been here from day one and got a lot of my customers to join AoS and discuss more than just DACs.

Of course, I can understand your resentment of the apparent preferential treatment that has been shown towards me, but I can assure you that it was earned through hard work over several years. As a relative newcomer you are excused for not knowing the background behind it all, but suffice to say that I rather have the sub-forum for my products disbanded and the individual topics amalgamated into the regular threads, instead of the decisions made by MartinT and Marco in my favour being questioned. Marco can do no wrong in my eyes. He is has stood by my side in very difficult circumstances both here and on other forums we were once members of. So I am quite upset when anyone wishes to use me as a battering ram to question the pace and method Marco and his loyal team of admins try out from time to time in order to keep AoS fresh and relevant, without copying the same old, same old format so predictable on most other audio related forums.

My heartfelt apologies if any of my previous comments have also contributed to your upset Stan, that was not my intention :( In fact a similar logic can be applied to Beresford Banter as can be applied to The Techiepedia section, re: both sections bring together the various mods and essential information required by members to help achieve the best performance from their equipment, so I certainly have no objections regarding the existence of either of them. In fact both these sections demonstrate to a high degree just how useful a well thought out sub-forum can be

MartinT

and says he who is telling everyone to buy a P10 at £4-5k :ner:

It's all about context, Dave ;)

For what I call a high end system (around £50k), then £4k worth of P10 can transform good into really excellent performance. In that context, it's hardly expensive at all and has given me more bang for buck than, say, a power amp or preamp upgrade would. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that a regenerator is practically mandatory at that system value level.

In the context of a £2k system, it makes no sense at all and you wouldn't see me recommending a regenerator when there would be so much to get right first (such as cables, your area of expertise).

Marco
18-03-2013, 23:04
For what I call a high end system (around £50k)

Mine must be 'low-end', then, as it only cost £30k ;)

Marco.

MartinT
18-03-2013, 23:17
Missed point alert! What I was really getting at is that the Stereophile accepted value of £100k plus for a high end system is unjustified and doesn't necessarily return benefits in any kind of proportional manner.

MartinT
19-03-2013, 08:22
:)

Well, mine cost about £50k and I would have to be persuaded thoroughly that I needed to spend more. Not that I have the money these days, anyway.

I quoted Stereophile's system price at £100k as many of their reviewed systems seem to total $150k or more. To me, many of the components seem to have a very vertical interest sector, rather than having a universal level of goodness to all.

I would rather have Bob Harris' and Paul Gambaccini's record collections!

StanleyB
19-03-2013, 08:52
I must be a pauper when I consider the value of my system. The only good thing to say about is that it's 2nd hand value exceeds the original purchase price of the individual components. Like the NS1000M bought off Jerry and which has more than doubled in price since then.

MartinT
19-03-2013, 09:18
NS1000Ms are excellent speakers, Stan. The nearest equivalent tech now are the Ushers which have beryllium tweeters and midrange drivers, and they don't come cheap. Why do you think I have a pair? :)

StanleyB
19-03-2013, 09:50
My Thiel is not bad though. The only issue I have with the Thiel is its passive radiator. The BM can go down to 1Hz at 0dB. But the passive radiator, by the nature of its design, is incapable of reproducing bass in a controlled manner once it kicks in.
That reminds me that any suggestion that the NS1000M is weak on bass and that it needs a lot of power to do proper bass is an urban myth. When I swap the Caiman over for a Bushmaster that extra low end frequency response is ample enough for the next door neighbour to complain about "shaking house content syndrome".

I am posting this as a question, probably to Stanley B,......when the hiface spdif convertor is powered up and connected to my BERESFORD TC7510 DAC, music from the computer plays irrellevent of which selector button is pressed...when no music is played by pc and I play music from cd through a different input all you get is digital bits and bobs....if I disconnet or power down the hiface it works as normal..
Is this the hiface or the dac?? ...thanks

Hi Grant, as I have repeated several times before: for specific technical issues an email should be sent to me so that I can offer proper technical support where possible. I can't promise to read every post on every forum that I frequent.

I don't have a M2Tech but what I do know about that device is that on the MK1 version of it the output level is far too high. That output level has been causing problems for many different types of DACs. It overloads the input receivers and can cause signal bleeding into other unused inputs.
The MK2 version of the M2Tech has that problem corrected. So the first thing would be for you to check which version you own.

I am new to this, and I'm old and raddled so that message had passed me by....as I feared it was the hiface that was swamping the dac switching ports....I will try to attenuate it, and if that doe not work then just go back to unplugging it when not n use....thnkx for the reply though.
