Compelling Case

Now there's a dedicated forum, to celebrate can one of you either author or direct toward a compelling case to buy this deck and spend shed-loads on upgrading it.

What would you consider to be 'compelling'?

My 1210 is just about bog standard apart from a set of Vantage Audio feet and an SME Series III arm and it kicks my previous TT's ass into a cocked hat, which was incidentally a modified Thorens TD160 mkII that was also fitted with a Series III. I'd suggest you arrange to hear a highly modified 12XX so you can make up your own mind, I'm sure one of the guys on here who own such a beast would be happy to oblige ;)

I think, to be honest John, the material speaks for itself. Dive in and read up on our thoughts. If you want to hear a well upgraded model, there are enough of us dispersed around the country that someone will oblige, I'm sure.

I "get" vinyl over digital Darren, but am fascinated by the passion shown to the 1200 or 1210 by so many of you.....I'm not questioning it and am very tempted to try it, but am looking for the killer reason that it'd be better than my trusty Systemdek.

I've probably bought less than five CD's in the last 20 years and I don't use a Technics.

I have not heard any other tt,so cannot really say if it's better or not.For me though,it has a great sound,after a few essential upgrades,has great build quality,very easy to use,no faffing about endlessly and can be upgraded,at various levels now,as and when it suits.

Not sure if any of that represents a killer reason for you though,i guess you just need to hear one :)

There are no words that we can use to persuade you, John. I really think the best thing for you is to hear one. You're far away from me, otherwise I'd say come over. There are many upgraded Techies around the country and I'm sure someone will let you hear one.

If you really want me to describe what mine sounds like in one sentence, it would be: "Structural and extended bass, incredible pitch timing and dynamics, detailed, spacious and insightful midrange and filigree treble that no CD can match".

I hate to sound negative but I don't think there is a killer reason to to go for a 1200 over what you have now ? Put it this way if I still had my Voyd .5 , I wouldn't be using a Technics ! Sure I like my Vantaged 1210 but it has it strengths and weaknesses like any other TT !

I do feel very strongly that when looking at upgrading this deck , make sure you hear the PSU , bearing or platter mod 1st ! As many did not , including myself , you buy something for £400 without hearing it 1st , based on word of mouth , hell of a gamble ?

I also have a Systemdek (IIX) - compared to my SL1200 it lacks a little bit of bass depth and slam, and doesn't time as well. On the plus side it has better soundstaging and imaging than the Technics although this aspect of the Technics may improve with the more expensive mods, I'm not sure about that.

If you play a lot of rock/dance/disco/electric blues/funk/soul/reggae/dub then the Techy is going to be for you. If your tastes are for 'girl with a guitar'/choral/acoustic/folk music then I think I would stick with the Systemdek.

That's an awful of genres that the 1210 seems to be at reproducing :lol: I listen to some acoustic music and would say the 1210 reproduces things extremely well I would say this is more of a speaker problem than one for the tt :scratch:

Thanks all for comments.....I'll track someone down from East Midlands after the Summer and see if I can get a listen......I have to say that Martin's "filigree treble" comment and the comment that my Systemdek is best suited to listening to a Girl with an Accoustic guitar were the closest to compelling cases :)......good debate, thanks.

I have never heard your deck so don't know whether a techie would be an up or downgrade.

However I don't think you have to spend what I would call 'shed loads' on it.

I only have

1) After market feet

2) FF mat

3) And a basic Vantage £200 PSU

4) £150 cart

The deck at the moment sounds really really sweet (and my system is quite revealing)

I listen to almost only dance type music and it suits it down to the ground.
