Sansui AU-717 and AU-517

Hi All
Just picked up a Sansui AU-717 and AU-517.:) I will put them together as one amp. what kind of speakers would you recommend? any advice would be appreciated:dance:

Very nice! My Dad and I are Sansui nutters and have a collection including over 60 pieces. We've got the 517, 717 and also the 719.

They are reasonaby grunty amps by virtuie of their dual-mono power supply including twin transformers.

Regarding speaker suggestions, they will drive the vast majority of speakers quite well depending upon you outright volume level requirements, the sensitivity of the speakers, and the load presented by the speakers (eg. easy to drive vs difficult to drive).

To narrow down some speaker options, provide us with some further information eg:

how big is your room?
floorstanders or standmount speakers?
what is your budget?
new or used?
what music do you listen to?

Hi Tor - could you explain what you mean by 'put them together as one amp'? Do you mean that you intend to biamplify with them or are you going to modify them in some way?

As you probably understand I am a newbie.

It would be most helpful if you could provide some extra information as I suggested in my earlier post, as not all speakers will suit all scenarios (and budgets!).

I've used a variety of small and large standmount speakers with my Sansuis, incuding Usher S520, Dynaudio DM2/7, Lenehan Audio ML1 (brilliant speakers) and now modified ProAc 1S clones. All of these have performed very nicely in a 4m x 5m room with musical styles including electronica, IDM, acoustic and rock.

My living room is about 50 square metre, I am sitting in one end of the room.
Distance between speakers is 2.7m and from that line to me it,s 3m. Open space to the sofa. Painted wood panel and parquet.It,s concrete under the parquet. I listen to classic,fusion,rock and loud when the wife is out of the house. Often the radio.I would prefare used and vintage speakers.

I've also used a variety of vintage-ish 'monkey coffin' speakers in the past (ie. approx 600mm tall, 300mm wide and 300mm deep) and they do a better job of filling a larger room with sound. I've used Electrovoice Interface 1 series II, Energy ESM2, Realistic Mach One, Sound Dynamics 300Ti, Celestion 11, Paradigm 3SE and KEF Carina II. All of these have different sonic signatures but they all did a great job given their relatively modest cost. I don't have any direct experience with high-end, top-dollar vintage speakers unfortunately.

Older speakers like the above do sound better after the capacitors have been replaced too - old electrolytics are past their used-by date.

That sounds like a recipe for very loud sound accompanied by smoke :scratch:

If one amp has a pre-amp output and the other has a power-amp input then you could connect them that way to separately drive the bass and treble sections of a pair of speakers (known as bi-amplifying).

Otherwise I don't know what you mean by 'series connection' but I fear the worst :(

They do indeed. Both the 517 and 717 have pre-out/main-in connections, so the AU-717 could be used as the 'master' amp for woofer duties and volume control, and the 517 used as a 'slave' amp for tweeter duties.

Not sure whether this would achieve a heck of a lot though, and the volume dial on the 517 would be out-of-circuit in this configuration, therefore no separate adjustment/tweaking of the tweeter output relative to the woofer output would be possible.
