I have been scouring the flat in the hunt for something to sell that will part fund my next hi-fi purchase!

So, the obvious thing to go is my lovely Squier Strat guitar in white. Never really played it and actually have a "proper" '79 Strat for when I can be bothered to learn! Problem is my 7 yr old boy has always been rather keen on it. So I said to him tonight "Daddy would really like to get some nice new things for the hi-fi - I'm going to sell the white guitar ..." He just pouted at me and said "Nooooooo!" So I looked at the mrs and said "I'm not selling it am I?" and she just shook her head and smiled. I even offered to buy my son one just like it if he wanted to learn in the future! But no, a new SUT and cartridge are going to have to wait a bit longer ...

You've not said how long you've had the '79 for :eyebrows:
Guitar Techniques Magazine is a good place to start, it's a monthly issue, and it only costs £5.25 or thereabouts.

Both Fender and Gibson guitars have tuition videos on their websites.
Both sites are straightforward, and highly informative.
There are plenty of tuition videos out there too.

So you can start learning properly before you get face to face with a guitar tutor.

One piece of advice I will give you is that you do not limit yourself to trying to just play Metal - you'll find that all of your heroes have quite a wide range of playing styles under their respective belts.

Thanks for all suggestions - I will have a think about best way forward.

I bought the Squier when Wayne's World came out! But the '79 have had for around a year or so.

I would like to think I could learn quickly if I apply myself as used to play various classical instruments in my long gone youth ...

I would respond better to a guitar tutor than video but it ain't cheap and will have to wait.

On subject of style, I take your point but I'll be happy if I can play along to Ozzy and Iron Maiden. Saying that I think Randy Rhodes was classically trained ...

Hit that Fender/Gibson website, learn and play along.
You've got the best tutors in the world there, and you can go back over something again and again and again, something you can't keep doing in real time.

You've had the Squier Strat for 20 years now - waiting to have the money to pay a tutor is just an excuse, and you'll put it off indefinitely, 'cos you'll never have the money.

Just do it.
You'll regret not doing it otherwise.

The tutor I found does sound great - he sends you a video of every lesson for u to go over. But am not working now and must put it out of my mind !!

Just think, this time next year you might be taking credit for inspiring Yngwie Malmsteen mk2 to take up guitar !! :hairmetal: :lol:

I've just been on the Fender site and watching a real crazy dude playing high speed blues licks and howlin' like a wolf....
It's where all the great guitarists started (the blues, that is), way back in the mists of time.

I decided to take the plunge learning bass a few years back (age 56) and glad I did.
Time goes so quick and how I wish I'd done it twenty years ago.
I can recommend a great teacher over Watford way if you live out this sort of direction but otherwise have a look at the register of guitar teachers.
Give your local ones a ring and check them out,have a chat and see if you feel comfortable with that person.
It's an interesting and rewarding journey so it's important to find the right person to make that trip with.
A good teacher will also,teach you how to learn,nothing beats proper tuition and will save you time.:)

Here's some of my arsenal, with a Les Paul I'd picked up for someone else (the previous owner literally lived about 10 miles down the road from me, so I was asked to do the honours).
I'm thinking of adding a bass, although I've not decided whether to go Jazz or Precision.

Ah well, not quite, but getting closer!

I've found a complete downloadable course that fits my metallic taste very nicely ... Just need to stump up the cash which is in short supply right now.

I am not going to tell you what they are as you will take the piss for sure :D
